Its not been easy for Aamir Khan, for he never was the mega ‘superstar’ that he is today. The 90s were dominated by the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan. Aamir crawled his way, all along concentrating on quality and content, to slowly make it to the top league and now beyond!
This decade after classics like Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai, Aamir took a 5 year long break due to marital issues and other personal problems. He returned with Mangal Pandey which didn’t do too well at the box office. Soon after which many in the media wrote him off.
Aamir stopped giving interviews and never really promoted the commercially risky Rang De Basanti. The movie went on to do great business, soon after which Aamir returned with the record breaking Fanaa. He then decided to take up direction and directed the brilliant Taare Zameen Par and the rest, including the historic business of Ghajini, is now history.
But no one in their wildest of dreams would have thought 3 Idiots would come close to Ghajini, leave alone beat the 65 crore record.
What has transpired in the last 5 days is beyond imagination, beyond belief. Aamir Khan has set the benchmark so high, that it would take nothing less than a miracle for other stars like Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar to come close.
There, no longer is a Top 4 – 5 in Bollywood, Aamir is in a totally different league altogether and without doubt the undisputed king of the box office!
yes AR srk is the undisputed unplugged actor not amir who is just a cheap promoter who does nt feel for the victims of terrroristic attacks and promoted his ghajini what shame on him srk never use this cheap advertyising yet his rbj becomes a blockbuster time will prove ho is the king emperor of bollywood after12 february ait and see

New Delhi, Dec 28 (IANS) Aamir Khan starrer comedy-drama ‘3 Idiots’ has created a record by grossing over Rs.100 crore in its first four days. Reliance BIG Entertainment, distributor of the film, released about 2,000 prints across 40 countries.
Based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller ‘Five Point Someone’, the film has been produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Rajkumar Hirani.
‘We are privileged to have been associated with ‘3 idiots’ and its immensely talented team led by Vinod, Aamir and Raju. The ramp-up to Rs. 100 crore in 4 days is phenomenal and we are confident that the film will continue to blaze new records in the weeks to come,’ Amit Khanna, Chairman, Reliance Big Entertainment, said in a statement.
Added Chopra: ‘Response has been overwhelming from all over the world. Aamir, Raju and I knew from the responses earlier on that people liked the film but this is something else? We have got reports from places like Australia that they have reduced ‘Avatar’ shows and increased ours.’
Released Friday, its box office collection has beaten the initial earnings of another Aamir starrer ‘Ghajini’, considered Hindi cinema’s highest grosser till date, with 30 percent more earnings till Sunday night.
”3 Idiots’ is the highest grossing Hindi film ever in Australia on its opening weekend. Similarly in the US, I have been given to understand that ‘3 Idiots’ would be highest ever for a Hindi film,’ said Chopra.
The paid previews of the movie also garnered over Rs.9 crore worldwide, above those of the paid preview collections of ‘Ghajini’ that was Rs.7 crore globally.
The film, which reportedly cost Rs.80-100 crore, also stars R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani and Kareena Kapoor in pivotal roles.

i completely agree with you that aamir is the biggest star today.but have you closely noticed the reasons behind record breaking success of ghajini and 3 idiots?ghajini was remake of south film.3 idiots superb story was inspired from a very popular novel by chetan bhagat.i a m not taking credit away from aamir.both the above films are atbb.mnpk ,hahk,ddlj,raja hindustani,kkhh and gadar were all atbb.but these films were purely original and became classics in bollywood history.you have some where underestimated the mass appeal of srk and hrithik by saying they need miracle to surpass aamir’s recent success.i also don’t agree with you when you said aamir is in a different league indicating he is above srk.i dont see mnik and kites coming close to 3 idiots collection.aamir will remain king till 12 feb 2010.if srk manage to deliver a blockbuster with mnik then he will win the race.i will accept aamir as the box office king only when his next film to be purely original and repeat the same kind of success as ghajini and 3 idiots.i again repeat half credit should be given to aamir of his recent super success as those films are completely not original.i am eagerly awating for aamirs next original movie.

We dont want Aamir as self-acclaimed king or media acclaimed emperor. He gives great movies and great performances and should continue that. Those who like SRK and Salmana and all others can enjoy their movies. Aamir is also a style icon, represents contemporary youth of India (and not NRI). as in 3 idiots he says… never follow success, go for excellence and success will follow you. I truely enjoy his movies and waiting for his next movies…

While i agree with most of you say about amir, yet to say that amir is even bigger than what amithaab was can not be justified. Yes, amir’s success ratio is higher in this decade but he has appeared in only 9 films whereas srk has appeared in 28 and salman in 36. So, his success ratio has to be better and full credits to amir for choosing quality films only.
But the success of big b was phenomenal, just see the track record of him in 70’s and 80’s, you will find instances when even 4 or 5 films realesed in same year and all proved to be hit. Many of his films were indeed bad films but successful on box office because of his charisma.
And there was one more actor who ruled box office and was always among top league was dharmendra. Although we have forgotten him, but just assess his box office record and you will perhaps find that his success ratio is even better than amithaab.
But, yes i do agree that today no start can compete amir.
it will take a miracle to beat the records created by 3 idiots. no one, including shah rukh khan, will ever be able to beat 3 idiots records. thats a fact.

You don’t know anything about boxoffice details of 70’s and 80’s. 3I is good success today but if you compare its success from movies of 70’s and 80’s, 3I is just closer to Amar Akbar Anthony or Coolie. AAA was bigger hit than 3I .. leave alone sholay. You poor guys don’t know those monster yaers of Amitabh era when he gave 3-4 blockbuster every year ( if you consider OSO, welcome kinda movies blockbuster then each movie of Amitabh in 70’s and 80’s was minimum blockbuster Hit).

Ghajini (2008) was far better movie in terms of character development, plot and execution of the subject as compared with 3 idiots. However, 3 idiots is also Aamir Khans’ movie but it lacked in vigor and punch. Many would agree that comic treatment of a material may not give out class results in motion picture be it a highest grosser on box office window. So far as talents of Aamir Khan is concerned there should not be another view, he has emerged as the best star of Indian Cinema. But in order to maintain this status he has to come up with something better / original and we trust Aamir has a potential to achieve impossible levels.
