When 3 Idiots released way back in 2009, no film other than Aamir Khan’s very own Ghajini had crossed the 100 crore mark. While trade pundits were confident that Rajkumar Hirani’s third film as director would break all records, 3 Idiots shocked the entire industry and the trade when the film went on an absolutely historic run at the box office. Records tumbled, and the classic almost doubled the collections of Ghajini.
Since then, more than 1000 Hindi films have released and almost all records set by 3 Idiots have been broken. But one magical figure stands tall – the 202 crore lifetime business, which is probably equivalent to 250 crore or more in today’s times. Two films came close – Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger and Ranbir Kapoor’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – but both fell short.
3 Idiots vs Chennai Express
Which brings us to Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express, a film that has broken almost all records – Highest first day / Saturday / Sunday / Weekend / first week – you name it! Shahrukh Khan’s first mass-entertainer in ages has collected Rs 156.7 crore so far in just 7 days, and looks set to cross the lifetime collections of 3 Idiots.
But with competition from Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara this week, which will result in fewer screens and shows, Chennai Express might either cruise past 200 crores, get agonisingly close and fall short or struggle to get there.

today every one is comparing chennai express with 3idiots,all has this same agenda of chennai express being favoured with huge screen size and high ticket price there are many factors tht ppl don’t see.

1: CHENNAI EXPRESS FACES AN EQUALLY HUGE FILM(OUTIMD) IN ITS VERY NEXT WEEK WHILE 3 IDIOT HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF FREE RUN FOR 6 WEEK(TILL A BIG BUDGET MOVIE RELEASED).
2: 3 IDIOTS COLLECTED $25M(APPROX) OVERSEAS (IN 2009 1$=INR46 WHILE IN 2013 1$=INR62)
3: 3 IDIOTS WAS RELEASED OVER 1600 SCREENS WHILE CHENNAI EXPRESS GOT OVER 3500 (BUT THAT WAS ONLY FOR FIRST 6 DAYS & NOW THE FILM HAS ONLY 1300-1400 SCREENS)
AFTER ALL THIS INFO I THINK PEOPLE MUST ADMIT THAT CHENNAI EXPRESS IS NO SPECIAL THAN 3 IDIOTS BOTH HAD EQUAL AMOUNT OF OPPORTUNITIES.
Shahrukh’s Chennai express will break all records!! 3 idiot’s record is just another 35 crores away!! Cake walk for Shahrukh!! CE’s lifetime may get near 230 crores!!
I think Chennai Express broke almost every records duiring these 7 days (with paid previews). I’m pretty much sure it’ll overtake 3 Idiots record at no.1 spot. The next 3-4 days will surely decide that. But its sure to to cross YJHD and ETT. Tremendous and ashtonishing 1st week.

3 IDIOTS was mass film as well as for classes. that means SINGLE SCREENS did excellent to get to 202 crores.
DHOOM 3 extensively shot in CHICAGO means its NON-single screen film. It will only do well on weekends only. It will fail with masses & will only be MULTIPLEX film.
CE was masses oriented & reason for its 167 crores collection in just 8 days.
dont expect this from DHOOM 3.
Aamir needs to do 3 IDIOTS kind of film again to break 200 crores barrier. not happening anytime soon.
BTW, EID is still the best day for film to release. Diwali is tied up in festivities. Christmas also I believe is a non-holiday affair.

there is no comparison between 3idiots & chennai express. 3I earned 202 crore with 1150 prints.it is highly unlikely that chennai express will cross 200 crore, though chennai express released with 3500 prints in domestic market, the collection is not upto the mark.features of every 100 crore film except 3I, barfi,ghajini & singham

100 crore club is no more significant. dabangg in 2010 earned 140 crore with 1800 print while dabangg 2 earned 143 crore with 3700 print. it is very clear that these films are not earning much money if collection per print is seen.to be equivalent to 202 crore of 3idiots now a movie should earn atleast 350 crore(due to infaltion & 4000 print release size)

I think CE will shatter 3 idiots record…everything depends on 2nd week’s collections…some people said that now SRK is in bad phase…but remember if SRK makes a masala entertainer…new records will be created like CE did as per now…can that salman do a class movie like JTHJ and make that a hit…? its impossible for that salman…but SRK can do different genre films easily…so he is the ultimate and the undisputed KING of both bollywood and its box office…
