2013’s biggest hit Chennai Express on Zee TV at 8PM

Chennai ExpressRohit Shetty’s Chennai Express will be aired on Zee TV at 8PM Indian Standard Time (about 5 minutes from now). The Shahrukh Khan – Deepika Padukone starrer is the biggest hit of 2013 with the film raking in Rs 228 crore at the domestic box office and Rs 119 crore oveseas.

The film is about a 40 year old bachelor Rahul (played by Shahrukh Khan) who embarks on a train journey that changes his life forever. Under funny circumstances, he meets Meena (Deepika Padukone) and the two eventually fall in love with each other.

Chennai Express is not unlike any of Rohit Shetty’s previous films. But it is not a Golmaal 3 (full comedy) or Singham (full action masala) either. The film has elements of all the genres that make up a masala entertainer in Hindi cinema – it has shades of romance, action, drama, but the overlying emotion is comedy. • Finally saw the movie, and hence my first comment on the movie, though i missed the first 45 min.

Since it is an entertainment movie, so let us not talk about irrelevant things like emotion and logic.

Let us start with the cons and pros.

    Cons:
    – Garbage Story
    – Ready, the crappiest movie of Salman is better than CE
    – The tamilians was awfully bad in the movie with nothing to do except flex muscles
    – Unlike OSO there was no chemistry between the lead hero and heroine
    – Music was awfully below par, but the lungi dance that had a good rhythm to it, no wonder it got popular.

    Pros:
    – Deepika was the crux and soul of the movie. She deserves every applaud. She brought smiles and laughter whenever on screen, especially when she teases about mithaiwala, the talking in sleep part and when she asks about kahan se mili aisi bokwas dictionary. First time I have seen her having good control and flow of dialogues.

Now, the million dollar question – why did it break records.?

    Well, $hit happens.

  • Even in this era when people are rejecting masala films, Chennai Express (second worst film from srk
according to indian audience and worst film for overseas audience since release of don)
    can afford to break records.
Shows that bodyguard & ek tha tiger were underperformers like ra one and don 2

  • @hippocampus

CE with a budget of 75 cr + the humungous promotions that took its total budghet past 100 cr has collected domestic 220 +, that is collection crossed double of the budet.

Now, ETT with a budget of 75 + minimal promotion of 10-20 cr has got collection of 199 Cr, that is almost 2.5 times the budget, and

Bodyguard made on budgetof 55 cr + 10-15 cr promotions collected around 140+ cr that is collections almost three times the budget.

    Now, do the math urself.

Hatred is good, but blind hatred is bad.

  • @jc y r u bringing budget here ??? Ok u can give hit/superhit/other status 2 a movie by its budget bt’ saying hw’ popular a movie is on budget . . Its nt’ good. . Ppl dnt go 2 see a movie by asking budget. . So use logic my frnd’

  • @Rehmat,

I used logic my dear friend, because I was replying to someone who said ETT was a underpeformer, but it was not.

Just because CE collections are more than 20 or 30 odd crore doesn’t mean it was way more popular than others, like 3i, ETT etc., If there was margin of say 60-75 crore, then yes, because that makes a huge chunk of people liked and saw it more.

Also, you said right, Budget is ofcourse not a criteria, becaue otherwise, Peepli Live that collected more than 4 times its budget would have been the best of the lot.

  • @JC just 20 or 30 crore more……??……….you forgot 1 thing…CE got 30 crores more than ETT with competition from 3 films reducing the screen size….whereas ETT had 3 open weeks with no competition…..How much more CE would have collected ,if no competition were there???…..CE might have collected 250cr+ for sure

  • Most entertaining movie ever in the history of indian cinema.
Honestly speaking, i never expected this movie would be so much loved!
