SULTAN Trailer Review

Theatrical trailers are undoubtedly the biggest responsible factor for any movie’s box office opening. It’s the sole criteria for watching a movie within its first weekend for the majority of theatre going public. Since the first weekend business holds utmost importance in recovering the huge investments, theatrical trailer of a film featuring a megastar is nothing less than an event in itself.

Salman Khan’s second outing with Yash Raj Films, Sultan, was announced as 2016’s Eid release amidst much fanfare. Since then the movie has been generating unparalleled buzz which has forced even an event film like Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’ to back out of the release period.

Sultan’s teasers have left the viewers asking for more and the trailer is awaited with bated breath by one and all. The second teaser had further raised curiosity as it bears an uncanny resemblance with the plot of Aamir Khan’s upcoming movie ‘Dangal’. So without any further ado, let’s get down to reviewing the trailer of the biggest movie of the year.

The trailer provides a perfect overview of Sultan’s storyline based in the backdrop of the state of Haryana. Salman is playing the title role of Sultan, who’s an international wrestling champion. His love interest is female wrestler Aarfa played by Anushka Sharma. Due to his highly ambitious and over confident approach, Sultan loses everything in life. Fortunately, with the help of Amit Sadh, he gets a second chance at the age of 40 when he’s not in shape and out of practice. He’s then trained by Randeep Hooda and becomes a champion again.

There are bound to be comparisons as many scenes in the trailer gives you a sense of Deja Vu. The plot premise is similar to Sylvester Stallone’s hugely popular classic Rocky. Salman’s waiting outside the committee’s room for his second chance reminds us of Shah Rukh Khan’s all-time classic ‘Chak De India’. Sultan’s training scenes look similar to what we have witnessed in ‘Mary Kom’. The MMA fights and rings were recently viewed in Akshay Kumar’s Brothers. And the idea of a champion returning to the ring after retirement sounds similar to Sunny Deol’s Apne.

The storyline is not unique, far from it, but if the movie is blended with perfectly timed emotions, it can turn out to be a huge money spinner.

As far as characters are concerned, this can turn out to be the role of a lifetime for Salman Khan. He is at ease with all combat fight scenes, innocent love dialogues, Haryanvi accent and intense training scenes. Anushka is A-grade as she plays perfect foil to Sultan. Randeep seems to have a meatier role than what is shown in trailer.

The music by Vishal Shekhar is sounding extremely promising as the title song itself has the potential to give goosebumps. The director, Ali Abbas Zafar, has given 2 successful movies with relatively lesser rated stars - much like Kabir Khan (Kabul Express, New York) did before he entered the big league with ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ back in 2012. So the movie has enough steam in it to generate serpentine queues of public outside theatres in the first week of July.

From the trailer, Sutlan seems to be a complete entertainer that has been made keeping in mind the varied fan-base of Salman Khan that stretches to every nook and corner of the country. That’s always the biggest challenge when it comes to planning a film featuring the biggest superstar in the country – the film has to appeal to every section of the audience and the makers of Sultan have successfully achieved this.

A section of the audience also tend to under-rate the acting prowess of Salman Khan, but from the trailer, the actor has nailed every expression. In fact, he excels in quite a few scenes. The intensity with which he has performed, especially towards the end of the trailer, is commendable.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Trade response: Like already mentioned in one of our earlier articles, the trade response to Sultan has been overwhelmingly positive. No trailer this year has come close to generating the kind of buzz that Sultan has and it’s highly unlikely that any other trailer will better it this year. We are not talking about quality or content here, it’s the sheer interest and buzz that the trailer has generated – is quite unprecedented. Yash Raj Films’ will go all out to give it the biggest showcasing that it deserves and this should result in a humongous opening at the box office.

Sultan also releases 5 weeks after Akshay Kumar’s ‘Housefull 3’. There are no major ‘mass entertainers’ in between (the only other big release at multiplexes is ‘Udta Punjab), which should give the film a major advantage when it releases in theatres during Eid this year.

The trailer of Sultan gets full marks from a trade point-of-view. It ticks every box and the last film that managed a similar result was ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, but even that film didn’t have action to attract the masses on Day 1.

  • ”A section of the audience also tend to under-rate the acting prowess of Salman Khan, but from the trailer, the actor has nailed every expression. In fact, he excels in quite a few scenes.”

    For some obvious reasons, this paragraph has been dedicated to some blind haters of Salman Khan like Dolly Bindra, Banana’s Fasal and Hyderabadi Rickshaw Mechanic… Lol

  • Excellent facial expressions when Sultan said, ” MAINE PAHALWANI CHORI HAI PAR LARRNA NAHI BHOOLA” and the expressions when he punched in end of the trailer and looks at the opponent, expressing combination of extreme anger, stress and power. Great acting by a superstar. Background score is also tremendous in the scene.

  • @Babaji, I think you speak better Harayanavi. You should have applied for the position to train them Haryanavi man.
    I smell burning of some s. Well, we will let Sultan speak at the BO…
    Wait for Empty House 3.

  • For me its luking PRDP not BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN. Totally fictional combination of abv mentioned movies. Only true emotions can make it a big blockbuster.. Otherwise eid factor is there to secure his postion

  • On the funny side, @Indicine, please don’t give Sultan 4 Stars upon after release. We fear of your four stars. Give 3, 3.5 or 4.5. Lol

  • As of now,Sultan seems to be the most likely contender for the spot of highest grossing Bollywood film ever. The buzz is outstanding. Even haters have liked the trailers. Let’s wait and watch SULTAN#Eid2016

  • Had there any low grade star in the movie the review would have been opposite…. RIP indicine

  • Well, as of now, I will stick to 250 Crores plus lifetime. After watching, I will say it will cross 300 Stores or not.

    @Malhotras: Abhay and Rahul, who are you guys, man? Two IDs of one person?? I spot you guys mostly under Salman articles. You guys are neither fans of Aamir nor of Salman. You can be a jealous fan of a third grade hero trying to create hatred for Salman here. That’s it.

  • One of the worst trailer I have seen in recent times. They have tried to copy everything – from CDI to BMB to Dangal – but have failed in each attempt.
    And on top of that, awful acting of bhabhijan makes it even worse.

    /*
    Fortunately, with the help of Amit Sadh, he gets a second chance at the age of 40.
    */

    With all due respect, here 40 should be replaced with ’60’.

    /*
    The storyline is not unique, far from it.
    */
    That’s true. Its a blatant copy of CDI , BMB and Dangal . The only difference is, those iconic characters were played (or being played) by top notch actors , but in case of Sultana , we have an awful actress who doesn’t even know A-B-C of acting.

    /*
    As far as characters are concerned, this can turn out to be the role of a lifetime for Salman Khan.
    */

    You are right. It was never so easy to portray both male (Sultan Ali Khan) and female (Sultana) characters in a movie, but bhabhijan has taken up that challenge, so yes, it’s indeed a role of lifetime for her.

    /*

    Eid rocks. No doubt Sultana will put big numbers of box-office due to Eid advantage and no competition. But in terms of quality, be ready for another piece of trash like bodyguard, kick or ett.

  • @Fake abhay 10:27, ha ha ha, have your own identity you moron. Dont hide like a coward by stealing others’ names. Dangal will be dhobi ghat only in your dreams. Wait kiddo. It will eadily thrash all records. By the way, we can surely expect this crap as Marigold 2. Mark my words, this movie will not break any single record. Mindless movies no longer work. Bb was exception. PRdP was saved due to best holiday advantage, solo release, etc. This time nothing cam save this crap.

  • @Babaji, read this again.
    ”Like already mentioned in one of our earlier articles, the trade response to Sultan has been overwhelmingly positive. No trailer this year has come close to generating the kind of buzz that Sultan has and it’s highly unlikely that any other trailer will better it this year.”

    If you can’t really read these due to your deteriorating eye-sight, then I will send you some lenses. Until keep burning and living in fear of Sultan storm at the BO.

  • The trailer is entertaining and appeals to masses so no doubt it will take huge initial, but cant say about contemt. It also reminds a bit to rocky series. Will have to wait and see if it is as good as rocky series or not.

  • @anand
    Even salman himself said that he never learnt haryanvi for the film and just learnt few words and used them all over.

  • This looks like a great movie.. It has action , dialogs ,interesting story,romance everything what a GREAT movie requires. Masses and classes both will love this movie. Not to forget SALMAN KHAN is there..Trailer is very good too.So I’m expecting 300+ – cr collection

  • Ye Lo! Dolly Bindra Bhi Agayi. I was just talking her nonsensical rants on Indicine. No valid points, No reason, nothing.. Still like old Dolly..
    Indicine is talking about this section of audiences that tend to underrate Salman’s acting prowess.
    I don’t think this Dolly reads any Salman article the fully or thinks before she rants. Lol

  • @Rahul Malhotra
    Irony dies a slow death after your comment.
    Aamir khan is still a superstar without Hirani and EDX (Rang de basanti, Taare zammen par, etc)

    But your Bhojpuri Bhaijaan is the biggest flop actor ever without Eid, south remakes and kabir khan. Big zero (Yuvraj, Kyon Ki-It’s Non Actor, Marigold, etc)

  • salman movies are overrated
    prdp reviews are positive but hny reviews are negative(both are craps)
    kick ,ett reviews are positive but bang bang reviews are negative (all movies have no story but action/stunts and stunts of bang bang are way better than these two)
    simply overrated and i’m sure sultan and md reviews will be equally positive while md will be way better than sultan)

  • PEOPLE go to theatres to watch SALMAN sir …They r least bothered about how good or bad movie or trailer is … thats y WE call SALMAN KHAN – THE ONLY MEGASTAR OF INDIA. THE MOST POWERFULL STAR…

  • @Indicine you forget few similarities like:
    Salman mustache is similar to Ajay D movie Bhagat Singh
    Salman Hairstyle is similar to Amir’s Ghajini look
    Salman Body reminds to Sunny Deol’s Ghatak look
    Salman Broken English is similar to Kangana’s TWMR style
    Salman Romance with Anushka is similar to Srk’s movie
    Salman driving scooter is similar to Srk’s movie RNBDJ
    Salman wearing clothes and sweater is a copy of all Bollywood movies
    Salman walk and talk style is also copy with some actor
    Salman punches is also copy from some xyz movie

    and the list will go on…..right Indicine

    But there is no similarity between:
    Srk FAN movie and Hollywood movie “The FAN”
    Srk CDI and Hollywood movie “Miracle on Ice (1981)”
    Srk Swades and “chigurida kanasu(2003,kannada)”
    Srk Daar and Hollywood movie “cape fear 1991”
    Srk “Yes Boss” and Hollywood movie “for love or money(1993)”

    Wow great work Indicine you never miss a chance to Defame Salman Khan….Great Work

  • U r just too much biased in favor of KHANS esp. SALMAN & SHAHRUKH… What a shame indicine!!! U never have any guts to portray the fact.. Sultan trailer is a strictly average nothing new a ROBOTIC expression for Salman khan as he always did.. It could be a blockbuster one yet it must be pathetic too for content wise..

  • @indicine Excellent trailer coz it seems it almost covers every section of audience!! If u say copied it doesnt make sense coz there wld have been only 1 rocky movie n not 5 n not other number of boxing movies or sports movies for that matter.. even southpaw copied them at that rate ..its more often than not a plot of a fallen hero or an underdog in all such movies! Every such movie has rigorous training scenes.. so i guess they copied each other.. every other such movie has a scene dealing with authorities even marykom had it n so i guess they all copied chak de..!
    I guess every movie that deals with a fallen hero be it hollywood or indian movie is more or less a matter of how well the subject is handled n presented n not about being an original concept coz such fall n rise movies have been made since ages n it dsnt mean they copied each other! So no minus points for the story!
    5/5 trailer!! Hope the movie dsnt disappoint!

  • 4 stars as usual!! Salman can give indicine traffic unlike Randeep Hoods which is why Sarbjit got 1.5 stars from them.

  • 200 crores will be easy for Sultan. I can sense the claps and whistles it will receive in the theatre.

    Coming to the trailer, no, it didn’t impress me. Salman’s wrestling parts are looking decent. But his acting is looking below par. I feel he can do better in his facial expressions. The dialogues are reminding of a typical Salman film. Anushka is looking good.

    The writing doesn’t seem to be strong.

    Despite of these wrestling sequences, the intensity is not felt. It was very nicely induced in last year’s Brothers trailer.

    Anyway, Sultan will attract the mass, there is no doubt!

    Trailer rating: 2/5

  • the film itself has a touch of salman in it.. just like the struggle he had to go in his personal n professional life n make a comeback.. n wat a comeback! even in his lowest phase he was still the most popular star in the country.. his films weren’t doing well due to films signed for family n friends as a favour n give guest appearances galore n neither the big production houses nor the big directors backed him then.. he was going through a turmoil in his personal life.. likes of srk, aamir were ruling n even there was a sudden rise of akki, hrithik n ajay were too doing very well.. every one of them were working with good directors, big production houses n big projects.. salman would even then with below average films would give the glimpses of his stardom.. all the other were at their best phase n salman his lowest but still the most popular.. it was just a matter of right films for salman.. the salman the audiences wanted to see.. n he gave them that.. rest as they say is history! now he has attained a different level of megastardom altogether.. in a league of his own.. it’s now that the big directors n production houses are queing up to salman khan to work with them but now salman khan doesn’t need anyone of them, he has gone beyond them.. now it’s only about salman, rest just follows.. a battle he fought alone, a battle he is ruling alone.. respect mr salman khan..

  • @Salman Fan 11:37AM, well said. You truly are a Salman Fan.
    Also, other actors in other films punched using both hands. Salman is doing too.
    Other actors have two hands and legs. So do Salman.
    But Indicine may never mention those copies done by SRK. Perhaps because their hero is no longer living in the hearts of the audiences, so they at least let him live in their articles, understand man. :) :D
