SULTAN Trailer Review

Theatrical trailers are undoubtedly the biggest responsible factor for any movie’s box office opening. It’s the sole criteria for watching a movie within its first weekend for the majority of theatre going public. Since the first weekend business holds utmost importance in recovering the huge investments, theatrical trailer of a film featuring a megastar is nothing less than an event in itself.

Salman Khan’s second outing with Yash Raj Films, Sultan, was announced as 2016’s Eid release amidst much fanfare. Since then the movie has been generating unparalleled buzz which has forced even an event film like Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’ to back out of the release period.

Sultan’s teasers have left the viewers asking for more and the trailer is awaited with bated breath by one and all. The second teaser had further raised curiosity as it bears an uncanny resemblance with the plot of Aamir Khan’s upcoming movie ‘Dangal’. So without any further ado, let’s get down to reviewing the trailer of the biggest movie of the year.

The trailer provides a perfect overview of Sultan’s storyline based in the backdrop of the state of Haryana. Salman is playing the title role of Sultan, who’s an international wrestling champion. His love interest is female wrestler Aarfa played by Anushka Sharma. Due to his highly ambitious and over confident approach, Sultan loses everything in life. Fortunately, with the help of Amit Sadh, he gets a second chance at the age of 40 when he’s not in shape and out of practice. He’s then trained by Randeep Hooda and becomes a champion again.

There are bound to be comparisons as many scenes in the trailer gives you a sense of Deja Vu. The plot premise is similar to Sylvester Stallone’s hugely popular classic Rocky. Salman’s waiting outside the committee’s room for his second chance reminds us of Shah Rukh Khan’s all-time classic ‘Chak De India’. Sultan’s training scenes look similar to what we have witnessed in ‘Mary Kom’. The MMA fights and rings were recently viewed in Akshay Kumar’s Brothers. And the idea of a champion returning to the ring after retirement sounds similar to Sunny Deol’s Apne.

The storyline is not unique, far from it, but if the movie is blended with perfectly timed emotions, it can turn out to be a huge money spinner.

As far as characters are concerned, this can turn out to be the role of a lifetime for Salman Khan. He is at ease with all combat fight scenes, innocent love dialogues, Haryanvi accent and intense training scenes. Anushka is A-grade as she plays perfect foil to Sultan. Randeep seems to have a meatier role than what is shown in trailer.

The music by Vishal Shekhar is sounding extremely promising as the title song itself has the potential to give goosebumps. The director, Ali Abbas Zafar, has given 2 successful movies with relatively lesser rated stars - much like Kabir Khan (Kabul Express, New York) did before he entered the big league with ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ back in 2012. So the movie has enough steam in it to generate serpentine queues of public outside theatres in the first week of July.

From the trailer, Sutlan seems to be a complete entertainer that has been made keeping in mind the varied fan-base of Salman Khan that stretches to every nook and corner of the country. That’s always the biggest challenge when it comes to planning a film featuring the biggest superstar in the country – the film has to appeal to every section of the audience and the makers of Sultan have successfully achieved this.

A section of the audience also tend to under-rate the acting prowess of Salman Khan, but from the trailer, the actor has nailed every expression. In fact, he excels in quite a few scenes. The intensity with which he has performed, especially towards the end of the trailer, is commendable.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Trade response: Like already mentioned in one of our earlier articles, the trade response to Sultan has been overwhelmingly positive. No trailer this year has come close to generating the kind of buzz that Sultan has and it’s highly unlikely that any other trailer will better it this year. We are not talking about quality or content here, it’s the sheer interest and buzz that the trailer has generated – is quite unprecedented. Yash Raj Films’ will go all out to give it the biggest showcasing that it deserves and this should result in a humongous opening at the box office.

Sultan also releases 5 weeks after Akshay Kumar’s ‘Housefull 3’. There are no major ‘mass entertainers’ in between (the only other big release at multiplexes is ‘Udta Punjab), which should give the film a major advantage when it releases in theatres during Eid this year.

The trailer of Sultan gets full marks from a trade point-of-view. It ticks every box and the last film that managed a similar result was ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, but even that film didn’t have action to attract the masses on Day 1.

  • the movie is looking unique in itself.
salman khan in all different league, movie will be definitely classic.

  • I’ll go with 3.5..it started slowly but ended very well..I always like these kind of films which are based on physical challenges and struggles…I loved brothers and apne too…but I am tad bit disappointed with salman’s haryanvi accent..I think he may not have performed to his fullest potential because the makers had very less time and had to do everything within 6 months only…anyways,i hope I am proven wrong and this film and salman’s performance turn out to be an excellent one..

  • That shot where someone taunts Salman, “Yeh adhed umar kar ka mota kya kar lega” actually gave me a punch in the gut. Salman’s reaction was moving!

While Bajrangi Bhaijaan trailer gave a glimpse of an impossible journey, Sultan promises to be a story of a rebel who cose to fight back. Looks quite exciting!

Beginning to like the shift salman has made from masala cinema!

  • as i said…nothing new to offer from the film..it looks more similar to many movies.. indicine u always giv evry khans movie trailer and movie review 4 star which shows ur baised not to lose khan followers from site.. my rating will be 2.5 stars because nothing new to offer..same old time of masala stuff

  • It was well reviewed first half of the article about the trailer but other last half was so shitty. When you knew everything was copied than how can you give 4 star , just make happy to lalluz fan.

  • Keep calling it biggest movie of the year and keep over promoting it. Over promotions only kill the buzz. And after end of the year once again get ready to get slapped by the real biggest movie of the year i.e. Dangal.

  • Yes @indicine no doubt the biggest superdupermega star of the country………sallu is all set to shatter every record and zipping all critics of his acting skills……go sultan go

  • BB trailer wasnt as exciting as this.Sultan will surely take huge opening in the range of 35-40 crores rest depends upon content and WOM, 350Cr for lifetime is given if postivie WOM.

  • Awesome faadu trailer…Another Blockbuster by the Blockbuster Khan..8th in this decade..proving that he is light years ahead of all others and is the Biggest Megastar Indian Cinema has ever seen-SALMAN KHAN <3

  • Top 5 grossers of this year
    1) Dangal
    2) Sultan (because of edx)
    3) Mohenjo
    4)Housefull-3
    5)ADHM

  • The trailer can be small and not so good comparing to other film trailers. But I feel and am sure it is bigger and better than Dangal’s trailer. Dangal will be another Dhobi Ghat. No entertainment

  • The easiest part for Salman Khan in Sultan was the part where he tries to speak to Anushka in English. Just as he struggles to act, he was seen struggling to speak in English. So there was no point in trying to act, as he was already living in that role.

  • And how fake was Salman’s haryanvi accent!!
Neither he was looking great as MMA fighter.
I am waiting for Dangal to see how Aamir performs in a similar character!

  • Sultan may collect 400 crores and break all records but at the end of the day , it will be a crap . Salman perfectly knows the art of selling donkeys at the price of horses and fooling the audience .

  • @Abhay Malhotra Only Sultan biggest movie of the year starring biggest superstar Salman Khan. Aamir is nothing without Hirani and Christmas.
    SULTAN biggest movie of 2016.

  • A section of the audience also tend to under-rate the acting prowess of Salman Khan…

That section is non other then BHAIJAAN Haters aka over actor fans…

Least bothered abt them as they can’t stop SULTAN becoming Biggest Blockbuster of this year… As Bhaijaan Fans are enough to make SULTAN Biggest Blockbuster of the year. And if content clicks then we can have industries first 350 Cr grosser for sure… InshaAllah

  • There was no need for trailer review of Sultan. Each and every point stated in this article is obvious to all the indicine visitors. Its not a polarizing trailer, Salman fans will love it, haters will hate it and neutral audience will wait for the WOM to decide.

  • Eid ll save this…
as hardly any solo movie fails to get success on Eid Diwali and Xmas….
i don’t even remember which was the last movie to be flop if released solo on EDX period..

  • @abhay malhotra
Biggest film of 2016 was Raees, but got moved due to YRF-Srk friendship.
    SRK>>>Salman>>Aamir

  • Yes we have seen in the past if the trailer is out & out overwhelmed then the movie will tanked at the box office, no one expected after watching trailer of BB that the movie would cross 300cr, keep my words apart from 2 days of opening the movie won’t be successful thereafter. To be honest the trailer is awesome but we have all seen this in movies like Brothers, Apne, Mary kom, Tararam pum and not to forget the classic Chak de India. Single screens – ATBB Multiplexes – Flop

  • Best 5 teaser/trailers this year:

    FAN trailer
    Airlift teaser
    Kapoor n Sons trailer
    Neerja trailer
    Ki n Ka trailer

  • Very good review, Indicine. But from the wrestling it seems a bit similar to other movies because it is a sport movie based on both Wrestling and MMA.
Obviously, sports can’t be two different types no matter who do it.

  • FLOP! Trailer rating 0/5
Non actor Lolman will return to his Marigold days after Sultan.
Dangal pandey will suffer same fate, Aamir is fanless actor, and no Raju Hirani to save him this tym.
Lultan and Dangal pandey will be disasters like Brothers.

  • Similarly, even the subject of the movie PK was somehow similar to that of OMG! Better excuted and put with high quotient entertainment, PK made the history.

Hence, the USP of the Sultan will be why he quit wrestling and why he wants to come back, not how.
