Box office Milestones of Hindi Films: 1 crore to 325 crore!

Ever wondered which Hindi film was the first film to do 1 crore net business? Or for that matter the first film to collect 5 crore and 10 crore at the domestic box office?

Way back in the year 1943, Gyan Mukherjee’s Kismet was the first film to collect Rs 1 crore in its entire run at the box office. Starring Ashok Kumar, Mumtaz Shanti and Shah Nawaz, Kimset was produced by the first public limited film company Bombay Talkies.

More than 17 years later, K Asif’s iconic Mughal-e-azam was the first Hindi film to surpass the 5 crore mark. The historic costume drama featured Prithviraj Kapoor as Emperor Akbar, Dilip Kumar as Salim and Madhubala as Anarkali.

The industry had to wait for 15 more years, before Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 All-time-blockbuster Sholay became the first film to cross 10 crore mark. The Amitabh Bachchan – Dharmendra – Hema Malini – Jaya Bachchan starrer was also the first to 15 crore.

And then the ‘KHAN Domination’ began. Apart from Sunny Deol’s Gadar Ek Prem Katha which was first to 75 crores, every milestone was owned by either Salman Khan (25 and 50 crore), Aamir Khan (100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 275, 300, 325 crore) or Shah Rukh Khan (225 crore).

Full list of all the major milestones. It goes without saying that all the below films are some of the biggest blockbusters in the history of Indian Cinema.

  • 1 crore - Kismet (1943)
  • 5 crore - Mughal-e-azam (1960)
  • 10 crore - Sholay (1975)
  • 25 crore - Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
  • 50 crore - Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
  • 75 crore - Gadar Ek Prem Katha (2001)
  • 100 crore - Ghajini (2008)
  • 125 crore - 3 Idiots (2009)
  • 150 crore - 3 Idiots (2009)
  • 175 crore - 3 Idiots (2009)
  • 200 crore - 3 Idiots (2009)
  • 225 crore - Chennai Express (2013)
  • 250 crore – Dhoom 3 (2013)
  • 275 crore – Dhoom 3 (2013)
  • 300 crore – PK (2014)
  • 325 crore – PK (2014)

The next milestone to look forward to, will be the film that will cross the 350 crore mark. It won’t be easy, because not only do films need a solo festive release, but other factors like 2-3 major holidays, 2-3 open weeks, along with incredible word-of-mouth.

  • The list should be like this.

    1 crore – Kismet (1943)
    5 crore – Mughal-e-azam (1960)
    10 crore – Sholay (1975)
25 crore – Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
50 crore – Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
75 crore – Gadar Ek Prem Katha (2001)
    100 crore – Ghajini (2008)
    150 crore – 3 Idiots (2009)
    200 crore – 3 Idiots (2009)
    250 crore – Dhoom 3 (2013)
    300 crore – PK (2014)

The list started with 1 cr. then 5 and then 10, that doesn’t mean you should proceed with the interval of 5 cr. from 10 to 325 like 15, 20, 25, 30, 35…………. That’s why you changed that interval to 25. But again you should have changed it to 50 cr. once you reach 100 cr. When films will start doing above 500 cr. then will you give milestones like 550, 600, 650, 700 ? No. Then you will make that interval 100 cr.
But still you kept that interval of 25 cr. as it is, which should have been changed to 50 cr. after 100 cr. mark.
Can any one guess why Indicine did this?

  • Nice article.

Few days back few idiot Srkians arguing with me saying DDLJ is a milestone movie.
    lol

  • LOL.

    100, 125. 150, 170 etc are a milestone each (total 4) but 20, 30 40, 50, 60 of salman are not (total 5)?

notice wen u go from 100 to 125 its a growth of 25% but from 20 to 30 its a growth of 50%
    wen u jup from 125 to 150 its a growth of 20% but from 30 to 40 its a growth of 33%

200- 225 is 10% growth. its even lesser for the further milestones.

    the real list wud be

1, cr – kismat (ashok kumar)

    2 cr – shri 420 (raj kapoor)

    3 cr – mother india (nargis-sunil dutt)

    4 cr – mother india (nargis-sunil dutt)

    5 cr – mughal e aazam – (dilip kumar)

10 cr – sholay (dharmedra amitabh)

    20 cr – hahk (salman)

    30 cr – hahk (salman)

    40 cr – hahk (salman)

    50 cr – hahk – (salman)

    100 cr – ghajini (aamir)

    200 cr -3 idiots (aamir)

    300 cr – PK (aamir)

  • Biggest blockbusters of all time:
    1: Sholay
    2: Hum Aapke Hain Kaun/Mughal-E-Azam
    3:Mughal-E-Azam/Hum Aapke Hain Kaun

  • The stats show how 3 idiots changed the entire BO game, just one movie 4 milestones. Simply incredible and awesome !!!!!!!!!!

  • Hrithik will create new records. Just wait for Mohenjo-daro and Kaabil. Only Greek god rules . All the old actors should leave by 2018. Quick notice . Pls adhere

  • @ Indicine Team

    On Prem’s comment.

Actually he failed in words what he want to say.

His meaning is ‘There is no sense in saying 125,175 or 225 as milestones’

Look in upcoming days may be after 20 years from bow Bollywood will touch 1000crs marks.

Will you make benchmarks like 1025crs that time also..?

    Benchmarks should be:-

    1 crore – Kismet (1943)
    5 crore – Mughal-e-azam (1960)
    10 crore – Sholay (1975)
25 crore – Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
50 crore – Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
75 crore – Gadar Ek Prem Katha (2001)
    100 crore – Ghajini (2008)
    150 crore – 3 Idiots (2009)
    200 crore – 3 Idiots (2009)
    250 crore – Dhoom 3 (2013)
    300 crore – PK (2014)

Because once you crossed 100crs mark then no sense in counting with 25crs further.

But i think reason behind making such tiny benchmarks is only to add Srk’s CE in that list.

Keep something to cheer for Srk fans in that huge list.

225crs benchmark which crossed by Dhoom3 after just 4 months by margin of 50crs.
    lol

  • Lol @ indicine

    Real milestone grossers

    Kismet
    Mughal-e-azam
    Sholay
    Hahk
    3 idiots

Thats it. Rest just built on previous years records.

  • @Yuvraj
    @Indicine Team
HAHK was the 1st one to cross 20,30,40,50,60 cr Milestones But not mentioned.Y?
At that time 10 cr means 100 cr nowadays.Agree?
    Why @Indicine team.Am I wrong?

  • Hahahahaha. Look at z SRK haters burned up seeing SRKs name in z list ……. 25 cr (as it includes HAHK) and 75 cr is ok but the 225 cr number is looking stupid to them ……. This guy raj saying 20, 30, 40 n 50 cr so that Salmans name can come 4 times with a single movie …… LOL. Get a life haters ………

  • Why not added hritik roshan krrish 3 official 244 cr ..break all previous record and create history ..!! So insted of ce..u can put krrish 3 ..then it is good ..!! Bcuz krish3 break record of ce..!!

  • Top 5 grosser of 2016 would be
    1 Mohanjodharo 370 crs
    2 SHIVAY 210 crs
    3 HF 3 190 crs
    4 TJB 180 crs
    5 Sultan 170 crs
    Remember my list
DANGAL will be below 140 crs

  • @ mohmovies- Agree, but ticket rates in single screens were starts -from 10 rs. that time now but now it is 30 rs. in indore. Hahk earned 69 crore in 1994 isn’t a joke. Some of users calls it shadi ki video because critics too said same. Rajshree released Hahk with only 29 prints. budget was almost equal to Sholay. But acording to some users-
    Sooraj isn’t in best directors
    Salman wasn’t main lead.
So who earned this 69 crore only Madhuri?
Then why our best banner Yrf failed to match Hahk after 4 year with
Biggest superstar of the world in 90’s – Srk
Biggest heroine of bollywood in 90’s – Madhuri
One of the best in 90’s Karishma
    special appearence of Khiladi Akki.
I am talking about Dil to pagal hai.

  • @ popeye- I don’t think you can enjoy Kismat because it was 1943’s movie and a too slow movie but you can watch if you are intrested in watching best of bollywoods.

  • The biggest hit of alltime is SHOLAY the record lasted 20 years! 20 years.
Footfall record will never ever be touched…
Today movies break records and next year that record is broken.

I think before sholay it was mughal e azam, record that lasted 15 years.
