Top Actors in Bollywood: April 2016

Now that Sidharth Malhotra’s Kapoor & Sons, Arjun Kapoor’s Ki & Ka and Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN are nearing the end of their runs, we are updating the list of Top Actors in Bollywood. We also highlight how the domestic box office is quickly becoming a two-man industry, because they (Aamir and Salman) are the ones who are holding the big festive dates.

Since there are no major releases in May, the next update will be after the release of Housefull 3. Tiger Shroff won’t be included because the minimum number of films to qualify is 3.

Some points:

  • The list would be based on the net box office collections of an actor’s last five movies. For younger actors, the minimum number of films is 3.
  • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration.
  • Dated movies that released before 2007 have not been considered.
  • Only domestic box office collections is being taken into account. Collections from all regional versions have been taken into considering as this list is for the top actors in India and regional language releases affect Hindi business in their respective states. For example, Tamil version will affect business of Hindi version in Tamilnadu / Kerala circuit.

Top Actors In Bollywood 2016

Aamir Khan - Anushka Sharma PK

Rank 1 Aamir Khan: The domestic box office for Bollywood has now become a two-man industry with Aamir and Salman dominating it. They are the only two actors to deliver 300 crore plus grossers and the contribution of their last 5 films is more than Rs 1000 crore – which also means, they average more than 200 crore per film! The rest have a lot of catching up to do, both in terms of major grossers and the hold over the major festive weekends – Eid, Diwali and Christmas – which is going to be crucial to sustain their stardom and aura in the next few years.

  • PK – 341 cr
  • Dhoom 3 - 285 cr
  • Talaash - 93 cr
  • 3 Idiots - 202 cr
  • Ghajini - 116 cr
  • Next film - Dangal (Christmas 2016)
  • Total - 1037 crore (Average per film: 207.4 cr)

Salman Khan and Harshali

Rank 2 Salman Khan: The megastar is at the peak of his super-stardom and the fact that he does more films than Aamir, gives him an edge over his ‘perfectionist’ friend. His next big release is ‘Sultan’, which would have to collect Rs 159 crore or more, for Salman to top the ranking once again. Unless the film disappoints big time content-wise, Rs 160 crore could possibly be the first week collections of the Ali Abbas Zafar directed film – i.e assuming it gets a solo release.

  • Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – 213 cr (including regional versions)
  • Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 321 cr
  • Kick - 233 cr
  • Jai Ho - 112 cr
  • Dabangg 2 - 154 cr
  • Next film – Sultan (Eid 2016)
  • Total – 1033 crore (Average per film: 206.6 cr)

Fan Still

Rank 3 Shah Rukh Khan: FAN has been a major disappointment at the box office, because of which an outstandingly consistent career is showing signs of slowing down. His fan-following is still one of the biggest, because the opening day of a songless film like ‘FAN’ was still close to Rs 20 crore net on Day 1. Happy New Year was record-breaking and Dilwale was huge too. But it’s the neutral audience that aren’t coming out in big numbers to watch his films. His choice of films has disappointed a lot of people, which is obvious from the fact that his last few films have all carried mixed to negative word-of-mouth.

With uncertainty around the release date of his next film Raees, it remains to be seen if Shah Rukh can come back strongly with the Rahul Dholakia directed film. Shah Rukh currently averages 157 crore per film.

  • FAN – 85 cr (expected)
  • Dilwale – 148 cr
  • Happy New Year – 204 cr
  • Chennai Express - 227 crore
  • Jab Tak Hai Jaan - 121 cr
  • Next film – Raees (still officially scheduled for Eid)
  • Total – 785 crore (Average per film: 157 cr)

Bang Bang - Hrithik Roshan stunt

Rank 4 Hrithik Roshan. The gap between Shah Rukh and Hrithik is at its lowest. Assuming that Raees releases after Mohenjo Daro, the Hrithik Roshan film would have to collect Rs 145 crore or more for Hrithik to beat SRK at the domestic box office. While the gap between the Top 2 and the rest has widened, the gap between No 3 and No 4 has narrowed quite significantly after the release of Dilwale and FAN.

Hrithik’s average of 134 crore is fantastic and comparable to the Khans even though he doesn’t always get to release his films during Eid, Diwali or Christmas.

  • Bang Bang – 181 cr
  • Krrish 3 - 244 cr
  • Agneepath - 122 cr
  • Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara - 93 cr
  • Guzaarish - 32 cr
  • Next film – Mohenjo Daro (August 12)
  • Total - 672 cr (Average per film: 134.4 cr)

Bajirao Mastani Photo

Rank 5 Ranveer Singh: One film called Bajirao Mastani has changed Ranveer Singh’s life. From a career that appeared to be faltering after the release of Kill Dil, Ranveer has risen from Rank 10 to the Top 5, not only beating stalwarts like Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, but also overtaking Varun Dhawan. His next film is a biggie too, Aditya Chopra’s Befikre. Ranveer is also the youngest star to make it to the Top 5, probably the first after Hrithik Roshan.

While it would be difficult for Ranveer to beat Hrithik in the next couple of years, the next target for Ranveer will be to average 100 crore for his last 5 films. For that, Befikre has to collect Rs 126 crore or more.

  • Bajirao Mastani – 187 cr
  • Dil Dhadakne Do – 77 cr
  • Kill Dil – 32 cr
  • Gunday – 78 cr
  • Ram Leela - 115 cr
  • Next film - Befikre (December 9)
  • Total Collections – 489 cr (Average per film: 97.8 cr)

Rank 6 Akshay Kumar: Airlift has lifted Akshay Kumar from the 8th to the 6th spot and with a big film like Housefull 3 scheduled to release during the Post-IPL period, Akshay is all set to make a comeback to the Top 5. Housefull 3 has to collect 105 crore or more for Akshay to beat Ranveer and a highly unrealistic Rs 290 crore for Akshay to surpass Hrithik.

  • Airlift – 128 crore
  • Singh Is Bling – 88 crore
  • Brothers – 83 crore
  • Gabbar Is Back – 86 crore
  • Baby – 96 crore
  • Next film - Housefull 3 (June 3)
  • Total Collections: 481 cr (Average per film: 96.2 cr)

Rank 7 Ranbir Kapoor: His career was at an all-time high after the success of films like ‘Rockstar’, ‘Barfi’ and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, but the last couple of years have been disastrous for Ranbir Kapoor as ‘Besharam’ tanked after a good opening day and ‘Bombay Velvet’ couldn’t even manage a face-saving opening at the box office. Tamasha looked like a winner because it was an Imtiaz Ali film starring Deepika Padukone as the female lead, even that has failed. Nothing seems to be working for Ranbir. His next release is Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

  • Tamasha – 66 crore
  • Bombay Velvet – 24 crore
  • Besharam - 57 crore
  • Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani - 188 crore
  • Barfi! - 106 cr
  • Next film – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (Diwali)
  • Total - 441 cr (Average per film: 88.2 cr)

Rank 8 Varun Dhawan: Another young actor who is not only appearing in 2-3 movies every year, but has made a name for himself in just 3 years. The trade loves him too - all his films have opened well at the box office, none have failed and his solo-lead film ABCD 2 was his first 100 crore grosser. He has now become a serious challenger to Ranbir Kapoor and should easily surpass him with the release of Dishoom in July. Dishoom would have to collect just Rs 60 crore or more for Varun to go one step ahead in the ranking and beat Ranbir.

  • Dilwale – 148 cr
  • ABCD 2 – 105 cr
  • Badlapur – 52 cr
  • Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania – 77 cr
  • Main Tera Hero - 54 cr
  • Next film – Dishoom (July 29)
  • Total Collections – 436 cr (Average per film: 87.2 cr)

Rank 9 Ajay Devgn: Drishyam did fairly well at the box office, but business was affected by Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Baahubali. When the film was gaining momentum, Brothers released and made a huge dent on the business of Drishyam. It would have probably collected a lot more than it did, had the makers timed the release better. Ajay has big films in the form of Shivaay, Baadshaho and Sons Of Sardaar in the next 2 years. He is making a shift from medium budget to big budget films and if this move clicks, he has every chance of making it to the Top 5. Currently, his average is poor for a well-established star.

  • Drishyam – 73 cr
  • Action Jackson – 57 cr
  • Singham Returns - 140 cr
  • Satyagraha – 58 cr
  • Himmatwala - 46 cr
  • Next film – Shivaay (Diwali)
  • Total: 374 cr (Average per film: 74.8 cr)

Rank 10 Sidharth Malhotra: Kapoor & Sons has done well at the box office, but hasn’t helped Sidharth edge out of Ajay. The actor’s next release ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ has to collect 81 crore or more for Sidharth to go one up in the ranking. However, for an actor who has only done 5 films, Rs 73 crore per film is a fantastic average to have. His only failure is a big budget film like ‘Brothers’, which also had a big star like Akshay Kumar.

  • Kapoor & Sons – 73 crore
  • Brothers – 83 cr
  • Ek Villain - 103 cr
  • Hasee Toh Phasee - 35 cr
  • Student Of The Year - 70 cr
  • Next film – Baar Baar Dekho (September 9)
  • Total Collections – 364 cr (Average per film: 72.8 cr)

Rank 11 Arjun Kapoor: Tevar tanked, but Arjun Kapoor has comeback strongly with Ki and Ka, which was a niche film that was well-promoted and opened very well too. It has helped him go up from Rank 12 to 11. Arjun’s average of 62 crore per film (last 5 films) is fantastic too, considering the fact that it includes an off-beat film like Finding Fanny. Half Girlfriend, based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel with the same title, is a biggie. If it does as well as 2 States, it’ll take him higher up in the ranking.

  • Ki and Ka – 54 cr
  • Tevar – 40 cr
  • Finding Fanny – 36 cr
  • 2 States - 102 cr
  • Gunday - 78 cr
  • Next film - Half Girlfriend (April 28 2017)
  • Total Collections – 310 cr (Average per film: 62 cr)

Rank 12 Farhan Akhtar: His popularity with the multiplex audience in cities is under-rated. His solo film ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ not only took a good opening at the box office, but went on to collect more than Rs 100 crore. Farhan has Rock On 2 lined up for release later this year. It would have to collect just 36 crore or more, for Farhan to reclaim his position that he lost to Arjun.

  • Wazir – 40 cr
  • Shaadi Ke Side Effects – 38 cr
  • Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – 104 cr
  • Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara – 93 cr
  • Karthik Calling Karthik - 27 cr
  • Next Film - Rock On 2 (November 11)
  • Total Collections – 302 cr (Average per film: 60.4 cr)

Rank 13 Saif Ali Khan: Phantom didn’t work even though it was directed by Kabir Khan and Happy Ending was one of the biggest disasters of 2014. Saif is currently going through the worst phase of his career.

  • Phantom – 53 cr
  • Happy Ending – 22 cr
  • Humshakals - 63 cr
  • Bullet Raja- 36 cr
  • Race 2 - 102 cr
  • Next film – Rangoon  (September 30)
  • Total - 276 cr (Average per film: 55.2 cr)

Rank 14 Shahid Kapoor: Just when Shahid Kapoor’s career was taking a upward turn with films like R.. Rajkumar and Haider, his much-awaited film ‘Shaandaar’ turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments of 2015. It opened well, but wrapped up with lifetime collections of less than 45 crore. With the trade losing both hope and patience in a extremely talented actor like Shahid, he awaits the release of Udta Punjab. What does he need to do, to get that one film that will turn things around for him? A film like Bajirao Mastani or even a ABCD 2, for example. He doesn’t lack in the talent department, but actors who made their debuts nearly a decade after him, have raced past him in no time at all.

For Shahid to go past Saif, Udta Punjab has to collect Rs 72 crore or more.

  • Shaandaar – 43 cr
  • Haider – 58 cr
  • R.. Rajkumar - 65 cr
  • Phata Poster Nikhla Hero - 39 cr
  • Teri Meri Kahaani - 29 cr
  • Next film - Udta Punjab (June 11)
  • Total Collections – 234 cr (Average per film: 46.8 cr)

Rank 15 Emraan Hashmi: Emraan’s career is at an all-time low. None of his last 5 films have even managed to cross the 40 crore mark. The genre that seems to be working today is biopics and Emraan will be seen in a film based on controversial cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin – which has to collect Rs 124 crore or more in India for Emraan to beat Shahid.

  • Hamari Adhuri Kahani – 38 cr
  • Mr X – 25 cr
  • Ungli – 21 cr
  • Raja Natwarlal – 27 cr
  • Ghanchakkar - 39 cr
  • Next film - Azhar biopic (May 13)
  • Total collections – 150 cr (Average per film: 30 cr)

Top 15 Actor Round Up:

  1. Aamir Khan - 1037 crore (207.4 crore per film)
  2. Salman Khan - 1033 crore (206.6 crore per film)
  3. Shah Rukh Khan - 785 crore (157 crore per film)
  4. Hrithik Roshan – 672 crore (134.4 crore per film)
  5. Ranveer Singh - 489 crore (97.8 crore per film)
  6. Akshay Kumar - 481 crore (96.2 crore per film)
  7. Ranbir Kapoor - 441 crore (88.2 crore per film)
  8. Varun Dhawan - 436 crore (87.2 crore per film)

  15. Emraan Hashmi - 150 crore (30 crore per film)

  • The first 2 positions remain intact as has been for quite a while. By year end I expect Amir to retain 1st position and Salman to retain his 2nd.

MD will 100 percent collect above 145 cr so HR will be replacing SRK and enter the top 3. Will be disappointment for SRK fans but I m sure it will be for a brief period and after Raees SRK shall come back into the top 3. A group where he has always belonged.

Good to see Akshay moving up. He deserves it. A great star.

With Shivay replacing Himmatwala, Ajay will also definitely move up a few positions. Similarly Satyagarh will also be later replaced with Baadshaho so he will come up to where he belongs.

Good to see Ranveer doing well and putting up a fight with the veterans.

I like Ranbir and hoping to see him make a comeback with ADHM.

  • The gap between first two and third will be narrowed after the release of mohanjodharo
Mohanjodharo has every possibility to cross 200 crs

  • RAEEES is not getting a holiday weekend and without EDX khans are
    Fan
    Jai ho
    Talash
Srk is sure to go down to 4th place

  • I m just wondering what would have happened to SRKs stardom had he not done those 2 masala big hits-Chennai Express & Happy New Year.

Those 2 200cr superhits got panned by the crirics & a section of the audience including a few Srk fans were unhappy with SRK for doing such brand of cinema. But just remove those 2 films from SRKs list & wat u get is definitely not a BO performance like a megastar in last 7 years. His films have only done well at urban centres and average at mass regions hence they failed to get anything more than a hit verdict while his last 2 releases were semi hit & FLOP respectively at the box office..!!

Srk is still considered as a megastar and only behind the other 2 Khans but without those 2 masala Biggies SRK would have definitiely slipped behind Hrithik & Akki(after consecutive big hits airlift & Housefull3) in stardom rankings as well as lost the megastar status. With the box office slide continuing for next 2 years SRK would have lost the status of a modern day SUPERSTAR & joined the club of ex-Superstars which would have been a shame considering he still acts so well & has a good fan following.

So thank God Srk did those 2 masala films with Rohit & Farah but then it doesn’t suit a star of his status to survive on such ‘Brand’ of cinema. Hence he needs to find a script that is top ‘quality’ but also receives big universal acceptance.

And perhaps he has found that dream film with Raees which seems to have a perfect balance of class as well as mass appeal. I have read the story on which Raees is based on and it’s absolutely fascinating stuff full of thrills as well as emotionally charged moments. Moreover if public could love Ajay in ouatim then they will surely enjoy watching SRK in Raees.

So i request makers of Raees to go ahead with the Eid release of their film despite clashing with the ‘Bigger’ film Sultan. A clash will definitely make their film lose 10-20% at the bo just like bajirao couldn’t enter 200cr club because of clash but with strong universal wom Raees like bajirao will still make enough to become a blockbuster. A last minute postponement of it’s release will also send out the message to the public that team Raees is not confident about their film’s content or universal appeal which will have an adverse effect on it’s BO prospect. Ex-Bombay Velvet,Ungli,Rocky Handsome,OUATIMdobara etc

So please don’t b afraid of releasing the film on Eid. Don’t listen to the stupid trade analysts & some websites asking u for averting the clash as they have mostly gone wrong. If u have confidence in ur film then plz release it on eid.

Just one acclaimed blockbuster and megastar SRK will get back his old glory

  • Form is temporary but class is permanent

25 saal se bohut aaye bohut gaye
Lekin senior ke saath ab bhi sabki takkar hai….

  • How Amir at no 1 ?… You added Gajini.. but why not added.. Salman EK THA TIGER… Dabang… n Bodyguard.
Ok if you include 5 films only… then include higher one.
Like… Include EK THA TIGER instead of Dabang 2.
Include Dabang 2 or Bodyguard… Instead of Jai Ho.
Then ultimately SALMAN will be no.1

  • I request u to include ROY as Ranbir’s film…

So Ranbir’s last 5 films become..
    Besharam
    Roy
    BV
    Tamasha
    JJ

total of these films come 160cr… And Ranbir will sink to bottom of rankings…!…
Ranbir’s himself said in media that he is nervous abt last 4 failures which include ROY …!… N u posted the same abt it that roy had 1 hr role of ranbir which is significant…!..

  • The gap between Bhai and Aamir sir is o lnly 0.8 lakh per movie. And between Bhai and global king is 50cr.

    Too much fun!!!

  • Phantom didn’t work at the Box-Office but it is one of the best Bollywood film ever made. A rare gem. Most under-rated film of this decade. We can blame to the less promotions done by Nadiadwala Team. Otherwise this film could have crossed 100 cr easily because Word Of Mouth was very positive in India.

  • Hrithik’s real average without manipulation

    K3 177cr
    Bang bang 141cr
    Agneepath 122cr
    Znmd 93cr
    Guzarish 32cr

    = 113 cr per film.

  • Numbers dont lie. This shows how legend Aamir Khan is way ahead of others despite having a less fan following than others. Learn from aamir how to select a script and how to act to make the character immortal. Long live Aamir.

  • After Raees & Mohen-Jo-Daro Hrithik will take 3rd spot.

Difference between Dangal & Sultan collection will decide whether Salman & Aamir will exchange their spots or not…but happy to see them in top.

Akshay & Ajay will improve there ranks with Rustom & Shivaay.

  • @Agan u just now have proved everyone why salman fans r considered to b the dumbest fan base ever

  • Mohenjodaro will not cross Airlift forget Housefull 3.
Asutosh gowariker films are not like Bhanshali, they are not that attractive and entertaining. His only clean hit is lagaan.

@ANK Bhai, don’t worry mohenjodaro will not do above 145cr so Hritik cant overtake Shahrukh.

  • Anyone else who agrees with me that this list is unfair un Akshay Kumar’s case, he’s the only actor out of all these guys who does 3-5 films in a year. So obviously the collection of his movies will be a little lower. Other actors do maximum 2 movies in a year.

Akshay’s last movie in the list is Baby that released just last year.
For Hrithik, it is Guzaarish that came 6 years ago and for Aamir the last movie in the list is Ghajini that released 8 years ago.

  • 3 khans should not be included in this list, as they release their films on festivals(EDX) which give them a edge. Note their non-festivals releases(jai ho, talaash, fan). If they were released on festivals, they will collect more than wat they hv nw

  • I am SRK Fan… I know… SALMAN is no.1
India’s know Salman is no 1.
    World’s Know Salman is no.1
    …..
Gajini 2008 included…. But Huge Ek Tha Tiger-2012… which close to 200 cr is not added.
And JAI HO -112 cr added… but not Blockbuster Dabang…Bodyguard. . even Ready which collected more than JAI HO is not in the list.

  • hrithik will be in top 3 inchallah after the release of mohenjo daro.
srk is over he and his fans need to digest that and move on in peace and dignity.

  • @ arjun- who considers Salman’s fanbase as dumbest, your kind of chameleon media? Because i know Salman has most fans in audience.

  • If Arjun Kapoor releases his film on Christmas like Aamir then he can also give All time blockbusters.
Also Arjun has more fans than aamir.

Arjun kapoor on non holiday 2 states 102crs >> Aamir Talash on non holiday 93crs.
