Top Actors in Bollywood: April 2016

Now that Sidharth Malhotra’s Kapoor & Sons, Arjun Kapoor’s Ki & Ka and Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN are nearing the end of their runs, we are updating the list of Top Actors in Bollywood. We also highlight how the domestic box office is quickly becoming a two-man industry, because they (Aamir and Salman) are the ones who are holding the big festive dates.

Since there are no major releases in May, the next update will be after the release of Housefull 3. Tiger Shroff won’t be included because the minimum number of films to qualify is 3.

Some points:

  • The list would be based on the net box office collections of an actor’s last five movies. For younger actors, the minimum number of films is 3.
  • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration.
  • Dated movies that released before 2007 have not been considered.
  • Only domestic box office collections is being taken into account. Collections from all regional versions have been taken into considering as this list is for the top actors in India and regional language releases affect Hindi business in their respective states. For example, Tamil version will affect business of Hindi version in Tamilnadu / Kerala circuit.

Top Actors In Bollywood 2016

Aamir Khan - Anushka Sharma PK

Rank 1 Aamir Khan: The domestic box office for Bollywood has now become a two-man industry with Aamir and Salman dominating it. They are the only two actors to deliver 300 crore plus grossers and the contribution of their last 5 films is more than Rs 1000 crore – which also means, they average more than 200 crore per film! The rest have a lot of catching up to do, both in terms of major grossers and the hold over the major festive weekends – Eid, Diwali and Christmas – which is going to be crucial to sustain their stardom and aura in the next few years.

  • PK – 341 cr
  • Dhoom 3 - 285 cr
  • Talaash - 93 cr
  • 3 Idiots - 202 cr
  • Ghajini - 116 cr
  • Next film - Dangal (Christmas 2016)
  • Total - 1037 crore (Average per film: 207.4 cr)

Salman Khan and Harshali

Rank 2 Salman Khan: The megastar is at the peak of his super-stardom and the fact that he does more films than Aamir, gives him an edge over his ‘perfectionist’ friend. His next big release is ‘Sultan’, which would have to collect Rs 159 crore or more, for Salman to top the ranking once again. Unless the film disappoints big time content-wise, Rs 160 crore could possibly be the first week collections of the Ali Abbas Zafar directed film – i.e assuming it gets a solo release.

  • Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – 213 cr (including regional versions)
  • Bajrangi Bhaijaan – 321 cr
  • Kick - 233 cr
  • Jai Ho - 112 cr
  • Dabangg 2 - 154 cr
  • Next film – Sultan (Eid 2016)
  • Total – 1033 crore (Average per film: 206.6 cr)

Fan Still

Rank 3 Shah Rukh Khan: FAN has been a major disappointment at the box office, because of which an outstandingly consistent career is showing signs of slowing down. His fan-following is still one of the biggest, because the opening day of a songless film like ‘FAN’ was still close to Rs 20 crore net on Day 1. Happy New Year was record-breaking and Dilwale was huge too. But it’s the neutral audience that aren’t coming out in big numbers to watch his films. His choice of films has disappointed a lot of people, which is obvious from the fact that his last few films have all carried mixed to negative word-of-mouth.

With uncertainty around the release date of his next film Raees, it remains to be seen if Shah Rukh can come back strongly with the Rahul Dholakia directed film. Shah Rukh currently averages 157 crore per film.

  • FAN – 85 cr (expected)
  • Dilwale – 148 cr
  • Happy New Year – 204 cr
  • Chennai Express - 227 crore
  • Jab Tak Hai Jaan - 121 cr
  • Next film – Raees (still officially scheduled for Eid)
  • Total – 785 crore (Average per film: 157 cr)

Bang Bang - Hrithik Roshan stunt

Rank 4 Hrithik Roshan. The gap between Shah Rukh and Hrithik is at its lowest. Assuming that Raees releases after Mohenjo Daro, the Hrithik Roshan film would have to collect Rs 145 crore or more for Hrithik to beat SRK at the domestic box office. While the gap between the Top 2 and the rest has widened, the gap between No 3 and No 4 has narrowed quite significantly after the release of Dilwale and FAN.

Hrithik’s average of 134 crore is fantastic and comparable to the Khans even though he doesn’t always get to release his films during Eid, Diwali or Christmas.

  • Bang Bang – 181 cr
  • Krrish 3 - 244 cr
  • Agneepath - 122 cr
  • Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara - 93 cr
  • Guzaarish - 32 cr
  • Next film – Mohenjo Daro (August 12)
  • Total - 672 cr (Average per film: 134.4 cr)

Bajirao Mastani Photo

Rank 5 Ranveer Singh: One film called Bajirao Mastani has changed Ranveer Singh’s life. From a career that appeared to be faltering after the release of Kill Dil, Ranveer has risen from Rank 10 to the Top 5, not only beating stalwarts like Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, but also overtaking Varun Dhawan. His next film is a biggie too, Aditya Chopra’s Befikre. Ranveer is also the youngest star to make it to the Top 5, probably the first after Hrithik Roshan.

While it would be difficult for Ranveer to beat Hrithik in the next couple of years, the next target for Ranveer will be to average 100 crore for his last 5 films. For that, Befikre has to collect Rs 126 crore or more.

  • Bajirao Mastani – 187 cr
  • Dil Dhadakne Do – 77 cr
  • Kill Dil – 32 cr
  • Gunday – 78 cr
  • Ram Leela - 115 cr
  • Next film - Befikre (December 9)
  • Total Collections – 489 cr (Average per film: 97.8 cr)

Rank 6 Akshay Kumar: Airlift has lifted Akshay Kumar from the 8th to the 6th spot and with a big film like Housefull 3 scheduled to release during the Post-IPL period, Akshay is all set to make a comeback to the Top 5. Housefull 3 has to collect 105 crore or more for Akshay to beat Ranveer and a highly unrealistic Rs 290 crore for Akshay to surpass Hrithik.

  • Airlift – 128 crore
  • Singh Is Bling – 88 crore
  • Brothers – 83 crore
  • Gabbar Is Back – 86 crore
  • Baby – 96 crore
  • Next film - Housefull 3 (June 3)
  • Total Collections: 481 cr (Average per film: 96.2 cr)

Rank 7 Ranbir Kapoor: His career was at an all-time high after the success of films like ‘Rockstar’, ‘Barfi’ and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, but the last couple of years have been disastrous for Ranbir Kapoor as ‘Besharam’ tanked after a good opening day and ‘Bombay Velvet’ couldn’t even manage a face-saving opening at the box office. Tamasha looked like a winner because it was an Imtiaz Ali film starring Deepika Padukone as the female lead, even that has failed. Nothing seems to be working for Ranbir. His next release is Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

  • Tamasha – 66 crore
  • Bombay Velvet – 24 crore
  • Besharam - 57 crore
  • Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani - 188 crore
  • Barfi! - 106 cr
  • Next film – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (Diwali)
  • Total - 441 cr (Average per film: 88.2 cr)

Rank 8 Varun Dhawan: Another young actor who is not only appearing in 2-3 movies every year, but has made a name for himself in just 3 years. The trade loves him too - all his films have opened well at the box office, none have failed and his solo-lead film ABCD 2 was his first 100 crore grosser. He has now become a serious challenger to Ranbir Kapoor and should easily surpass him with the release of Dishoom in July. Dishoom would have to collect just Rs 60 crore or more for Varun to go one step ahead in the ranking and beat Ranbir.

  • Dilwale – 148 cr
  • ABCD 2 – 105 cr
  • Badlapur – 52 cr
  • Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania – 77 cr
  • Main Tera Hero - 54 cr
  • Next film – Dishoom (July 29)
  • Total Collections – 436 cr (Average per film: 87.2 cr)

Rank 9 Ajay Devgn: Drishyam did fairly well at the box office, but business was affected by Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Baahubali. When the film was gaining momentum, Brothers released and made a huge dent on the business of Drishyam. It would have probably collected a lot more than it did, had the makers timed the release better. Ajay has big films in the form of Shivaay, Baadshaho and Sons Of Sardaar in the next 2 years. He is making a shift from medium budget to big budget films and if this move clicks, he has every chance of making it to the Top 5. Currently, his average is poor for a well-established star.

  • Drishyam – 73 cr
  • Action Jackson – 57 cr
  • Singham Returns - 140 cr
  • Satyagraha – 58 cr
  • Himmatwala - 46 cr
  • Next film – Shivaay (Diwali)
  • Total: 374 cr (Average per film: 74.8 cr)

Rank 10 Sidharth Malhotra: Kapoor & Sons has done well at the box office, but hasn’t helped Sidharth edge out of Ajay. The actor’s next release ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ has to collect 81 crore or more for Sidharth to go one up in the ranking. However, for an actor who has only done 5 films, Rs 73 crore per film is a fantastic average to have. His only failure is a big budget film like ‘Brothers’, which also had a big star like Akshay Kumar.

  • Kapoor & Sons – 73 crore
  • Brothers – 83 cr
  • Ek Villain - 103 cr
  • Hasee Toh Phasee - 35 cr
  • Student Of The Year - 70 cr
  • Next film – Baar Baar Dekho (September 9)
  • Total Collections – 364 cr (Average per film: 72.8 cr)

Rank 11 Arjun Kapoor: Tevar tanked, but Arjun Kapoor has comeback strongly with Ki and Ka, which was a niche film that was well-promoted and opened very well too. It has helped him go up from Rank 12 to 11. Arjun’s average of 62 crore per film (last 5 films) is fantastic too, considering the fact that it includes an off-beat film like Finding Fanny. Half Girlfriend, based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel with the same title, is a biggie. If it does as well as 2 States, it’ll take him higher up in the ranking.

  • Ki and Ka – 54 cr
  • Tevar – 40 cr
  • Finding Fanny – 36 cr
  • 2 States - 102 cr
  • Gunday - 78 cr
  • Next film - Half Girlfriend (April 28 2017)
  • Total Collections – 310 cr (Average per film: 62 cr)

Rank 12 Farhan Akhtar: His popularity with the multiplex audience in cities is under-rated. His solo film ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ not only took a good opening at the box office, but went on to collect more than Rs 100 crore. Farhan has Rock On 2 lined up for release later this year. It would have to collect just 36 crore or more, for Farhan to reclaim his position that he lost to Arjun.

  • Wazir – 40 cr
  • Shaadi Ke Side Effects – 38 cr
  • Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – 104 cr
  • Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara – 93 cr
  • Karthik Calling Karthik - 27 cr
  • Next Film - Rock On 2 (November 11)
  • Total Collections – 302 cr (Average per film: 60.4 cr)

Rank 13 Saif Ali Khan: Phantom didn’t work even though it was directed by Kabir Khan and Happy Ending was one of the biggest disasters of 2014. Saif is currently going through the worst phase of his career.

  • Phantom – 53 cr
  • Happy Ending – 22 cr
  • Humshakals - 63 cr
  • Bullet Raja- 36 cr
  • Race 2 - 102 cr
  • Next film – Rangoon  (September 30)
  • Total - 276 cr (Average per film: 55.2 cr)

Rank 14 Shahid Kapoor: Just when Shahid Kapoor’s career was taking a upward turn with films like R.. Rajkumar and Haider, his much-awaited film ‘Shaandaar’ turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments of 2015. It opened well, but wrapped up with lifetime collections of less than 45 crore. With the trade losing both hope and patience in a extremely talented actor like Shahid, he awaits the release of Udta Punjab. What does he need to do, to get that one film that will turn things around for him? A film like Bajirao Mastani or even a ABCD 2, for example. He doesn’t lack in the talent department, but actors who made their debuts nearly a decade after him, have raced past him in no time at all.

For Shahid to go past Saif, Udta Punjab has to collect Rs 72 crore or more.

  • Shaandaar – 43 cr
  • Haider – 58 cr
  • R.. Rajkumar - 65 cr
  • Phata Poster Nikhla Hero - 39 cr
  • Teri Meri Kahaani - 29 cr
  • Next film - Udta Punjab (June 11)
  • Total Collections – 234 cr (Average per film: 46.8 cr)

Rank 15 Emraan Hashmi: Emraan’s career is at an all-time low. None of his last 5 films have even managed to cross the 40 crore mark. The genre that seems to be working today is biopics and Emraan will be seen in a film based on controversial cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin – which has to collect Rs 124 crore or more in India for Emraan to beat Shahid.

  • Hamari Adhuri Kahani – 38 cr
  • Mr X – 25 cr
  • Ungli – 21 cr
  • Raja Natwarlal – 27 cr
  • Ghanchakkar - 39 cr
  • Next film - Azhar biopic (May 13)
  • Total collections – 150 cr (Average per film: 30 cr)

  • what a joke indicine are you nuts, the comparison itself is absurd and idiotic, aamir has 5 films in last 8 years, salman has 5 films in last 3 years, srk has 5 films in last 4 years, hritik has 5 films in last 5 years and surprisingly akshay has 5 films in only one year, bollywood cannot sustain only due to diwali eid or christmas releases. if you count last 5 years films of akshay the combined collection will be way over the rest that is why he is called one man parallel industry

  • Srk is still best actor of the country even best of Amir hr..As a Dieheart Srk fan i agreed downfall of Srk is Started…70% of commen people hate Srk and even Critics rating is also not favour srk like kapoor and sons airlift nirja even BB or Pk not even close to them…

  • Srk will come at no.2 after raees and SL sultan bcoz sultan will not run good at no.and raees will shatter all records.

  • @indicine
As xpcted u ignored my ques for ask indicine yet again…
Bt atleast rply about dis 1!
U go gaga over srk for his irritating PR activities n evn ignore d humanity of aamir, salman, ajay n akki more often dan not…
Ace khan adopted 2 drought hit villages of maharashtra n no article about dat…
    U shud atlst apreciate d noble cause…

  • So you say that footfalls,Screen count, profitability ,season of release, ticket rates gap between 2 films and etc etc dosent matter? what logic is there in comparing a stars last 8 or 5 years film and one stars films barely a year old?Festive or non festive release is irrelevant? what about yearly box office collections then? If you want to really make a ranking of stars then make it in a way which is fair to everyoneor else dont even attempt. Look at Ormax and Times celebex rankings they make it on the basis of a very large spectrum of factors. Rankings based on collection of last 5 films of actors, seriously? we are not in school.

  • @70cr kiladi,Sir Akshay has crossed 480+ crores India nett box office on normal weekends. And we should rather talk about EDX over khans because as far as i remember they even struggle to cross 100 crores even after a year gap of movies if you remove the EDX factor. So @70rupee Kiladi get yourself treated first and then we will talk.

  • I don’t think there will be any actor in History of Indian Cinema that will even come close to SALMAN BHAI if there would be an average of LAST 10 Movies!!! Do the math of other stars I will do of SALMAN BHAIs ….
    PRDP- 213
    BB-321
    Kick-231
    jai ho- 112
    Dabangg2- 154
    ETT- 196
    Bodyguard- 145
    Ready- 121
    Dabangg- 141
    Veer- 37
    Total = 1671 crore
Last 10 movies avg 167 cr

No one would even come close …..I don’t think there would be actors that even croses 100 crore!!!!!!

  • @emm ess you idiot, oxymoron, aamir has highest fan following in india and overseas. He is Megastat because of his Fan Following. No one has achieved the love and popularity as Megastar Aamir Khan.

  • @Yamraj, who the hell are you to bark against a legend megastar like srk? You puny decade struggler flopstar’s fan just stay within your limits and shut your bloody mouth. Whatever your tiny decade struggler new comer is achieving now a days, srk has achieved all that way too long ago. Underatand this and keep your tiny mouth shut. Your new comer who is born as a star after 2010 should not be considered even a star if srk is not called megastar. Your puny new comer star doesnt have guts to move on from same dumb mindless genre and do experimental movie like fan, if he will do that then it will be bigger disaster than marigold. So shut up and respect srk who is still much bigger star than your new commer star.

  • @hassan ali, why didn’t you mention any muslim actresses? One thing is sure that you are a agent of love jihad.

  • @Niraj, you idiot, first look at last 10 years, yes nobody will come close to salman in flops, disasters and lowest grossers. Shut up and respect the other superstars.

  • in coming 5-7 years all other actors including khans will become a joke in front of hrithik ……

  • That was an amazingly witty answer… to the question that MD will cross airlift or not….that ..the question should be that it will cross in 5 days or 6..haha….thats so true

  • take last 10 movies of all the Actors and then compare it… Nobody will find near SALMAN KHAN
the No 1 in this list i.e Amir Khan you will find much much much behind SALMAN kHAN
If you want to compare all Actors leave aside SALMAN KHAN and then compare, bcoz right now nobody can match SALMAN KHAN.
