Top 10 Bollywood Movies of 2014: Most Awaited

2013 was a golden year for the film industry, what with three films grossing more than 200 crores at the domestic box office, and one film going on to collect more than Rs 500 crore worldwide. Stardom and fan following of the top superstars has reached an all time high and hence sky will be the limit for almost every big release of 2014.

The market for Hindi movies is growing worldwide and all those 10-15 big releases are awaited by one and all with bated breath. A plethora of big and interesting movies have been waiting to hit the silver screens in 2014.

Below mentioned is the list of top ten most anticipated Bollywood movies of 2014. Have a look!

10. Bombay Velvet: Anurag Kashyap is known for directing off-beat hard hitting movies. But this year he has decided to enter the commercial genre in a full-fledged manner with ‘Bombay Velvet’ featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma along with Karan Johar as the primary antagonist. Movie is set in Bombay from 1950s to 1970s and will hit the screens during Christmas, 2014.

9. Action Jackson: Prabhudeva has never got it wrong when it comes to directing action-masala films. While ‘Wanted’ and ‘Rowdy Rathore’ went on to be huge grossers, Prabhu ended Shahid’s dull phase at the box office with ‘R.. Rajkumar’. Now he is all set to revive the magic with Ajay Devgn with ‘Action Jackson’.

8. Jagga Jasoos: Anurag Basu managed to extract a ‘performance of a lifetime’ from Ranbir Kapoor in ‘Barfi’ as the movie turned out to be the biggest surprise hit of 2012. The two return in 2014 with ‘Jagga Jasoos’. The inclusion of Katrina Kaif to the starcast has further raised the prospects of this detective drama at the ticket window.

7. Holiday: After starting the trend of southern remakes with the first ‘100 cr grosser’ ‘Ghajini’, director A.R. Murugadoss is directing ‘Holiday’ which will be the Hindi remake of his own Tamil blockbuster ‘Thuppakki’. There is going to be a long 8 month gap between this movie and Akshay Kumar’s last release ‘Boss’ which will surely bring his in-numerous die-hard fans in numbers to theatres.

6. Singham 2: After the super success of ‘Chennai Express’, director Rohit Shetty returns to his favourite star Ajay Devgn with the sequel of Singham. The addition of Kareena Kapoor to the cast has further raised the bar of expectations. The original movie has a huge recall value, as it is still screened multiple times on television every week and is considered to be one of Devgn’s finest performances in the last few years.

5. Bang Bang: After the success of ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ , the super hot pair of Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif will be seen in Siddharth Anand’s ‘Bang Bang’. The movie is a remake of Tom Cruise’s ‘Knight And Day’ and hence will be full of stylized action. The chemistry between Hrithik and Katrina wasn’t explored in ZNMD due to the presence of other actors but ‘Bang Bang’ surely promises to present its lead pair in never-before-seen avatars.

4. Jai Ho: For the first time in his 25 year career, Salman has seen a year go by without a release. ‘Jai Ho’ will mark the comeback of the superstar more than a year after his last release ‘Dabangg 2’. The special thing about the movie is that apart from his regular action and masala stuff, Salman is also trying to give a social message through this Sohail Khan directed film.

3. Kick : Salman missed out on his favorite Eid release date in 2013 but he is all set to reaffirm his dominance this year with Sajid Nadiadwala’s ‘Kick’. Producer-turned-director Sajid is going to leave no stone unturned for his directorial debut which is a remake of Telugu movie with the same title. Screenplay by Chetan Bhagat , dialogues by Rajat Arora and music by Himesh Reshammiya are going to be the key ingredients. Salman has created box office history with his earlier Eid releases ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (2012), ‘Bodyguard’ (2011) and ‘Dabangg’(2010).

2. Happy New Year: King Khan shattered all records with ‘Chennai Express’ and he has now re-united with his favourite director Farah Khan for ‘Happy New Year’. This is going to be SRK’s 11th (Yes, you read it right) Diwali mega release. The superstar has earlier featured in ‘Main Hoon Na’ and ‘Om Shanti Om’ with Farah Khan and going by the first poster we can safely assume that the movie is going to be a complete masala entertainer. The presence of Deepika Padukone is an icing on the cake.

1. P.K: Can’t get bigger or better, can it? The first time that Aamir Khan and Rajukumar Hirani came together in 2009, the result was ‘3 Idiots’ which became not only the most successful movie of its time, but also the most acclaimed film. Hirani has a impeccable record too, each of his last three films ‘MunnaBhai MBBS’, ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ and ‘3 Idiots’ have been classics. The theme of ‘P.K.’ has been kept under the wraps but the wait is definitely going to be well worth it. The release date too is perfect as the next weekend after the Indian Premiere League has given the industry back to back blockbusters in ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’(2013), ‘Rowdy Rathore’(2012) and ‘Ready’(2011).

A few other films that have the potential to be on the list are – ‘Its Entertainment’ (Akshay Kumar, Tamannah),’ Gabbar’ (Akshay Kumar), ‘Humshakals’ (Saif Ali Khan) and ‘Phantom’ (Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif).

Few films which can spring a pleasant surprise are ‘Kill Dil’(Ranveer Singh, Parineeti Chopra), ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’(Farhan Akhtar, Vidya Balan), ‘2 States’ (Arjun Kapoor, Aalia Bhatt), Gunday (Arjun Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Priyanka), Hasee Toh Phasee (Sidharth Malhotra, Parineeti Chopra) and quite a few other films.

Due to Hrithik’s injury, the shoot of ‘Shuddhi’ has delayed and the film will only release in 2015. If at all the movie comes in 2014, it will definitely be in the top 5.

  • Star Popularity vs. Box Office: Not The Same Thing!
Posted on January 8, 2014 by Shailesh Kapoor

Last week, @OrmaxMedia tweeted annual results of its star popularity tracking research called Ormax Stars India Loves (OSIL). As per the results, Akshay Kumar ranked as the third most popular male star in India, in 2013, behind Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan. Katrina Kaif led the female stars list, well ahead of Deepika Padukone.

Every time OSIL results are tweeted, we get some standard questions in response. These examples capture their essence:

    1. How can Katrina be no. 1 when Deepika has given four big hits this year?
    2. Akshay Kumar at no. 3? All his films this year have flopped except Special 26.
    3. Rani in the top 10! Are you kidding me? When did she last do a film?
    4. Salman at no. 1 without any release in 2013? But Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 are the biggest grossers. Your survey is wrong.

Most of these questions (largely from fans and fan clubs) have a common and rather simplistic answer. That popularity and box office are two different metrics.

Box office depends on a wide array of factors. While star cast is the leading factor amongst these, other factors can play more than a significant role in determining the box office fate of any film, be it the opening or the lifetime collections. Some of these factors are genre appeal, music, promos, director, word-of-mouth, reviews and franchise appeal.

Popularity, on the other hand, is only about the star’s recall value and equity amongst the audiences. No other factor, including those listed above, have a bearing on a star’s popularity. In simple terms, star popularity, as captured through OSIL, is a measure of a star’s fan base. OSIL covers an annual sample size of more than 40,000 cine-goers in 29 cities in India. Statistically, that’s as representative as we can realistically get in estimating a star’s fan base.

Let’s take the case Akshay Kumar. His fan base being bigger than that of Ranbir Kapoor, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan, as per OSIL 2013 results. So when his films flop, it simply means that he is not using his equity well. He is either working with the wrong scripts and directors, or signing up films in dead or declining genres (such as masala action in Boss). If he continues to do this for a while, his fan base will obviously take a hit. But fan bases, fairly loyal as they are, don’t desert their favorite stars overnight.

Then there is the other aspect of acting abilities, often mentioned in the Katrina vs. Deepika debate. Katrina can’t act, is a social media argument often given for her supposedly undeserving place on the top. This argument rests of a flawed assumption – that acting skills play a pivotal role in building and strengthening the fan base for a star. In fact, there is very little research evidence to this effect. Katrina’s “personality”, defined in India as a mix of looks, presence, speech and attitude, has driven her fan base for more than five years now. Her careful selection of roles that allow her to use her personality well, has played a crucial role in making her as popular as she is today.

“No. 1 star” and “No. 1 actor” are two entirely different things. And the day they merge, the concept of stardom will die a natural death. Thankfully, we are nowhere close to that happening.

This was a clarification post to settle the incessant twitter debates on OSIL results. Hope it does that at least in some measure!

  • I know “HNY” will win this poll but i m again saying like last year that it will fail to become highest grosser of 2014 bcoz this year Aamir has 1 release while Salman has 2.

  • Only “PK” and “Kick” has potential to create 300 crore club in 2014 which i think “Dhoom 3” will fail to make by some crores.

  • 1.pk 2.holiday 3.kick 4.jai ho(sohail direction otherwise 3) 5.gunday 6.singham-2 7.bang bang 8.bobby jasoos(no jaggo jasoos) 9.fan(pitted against bombay velvet) 10.phatom …farah direction is bad we knw tht but srk star power wil make it a hit

  • Most awaited for me is bang bang
But the movies which would be biggest grossers would come from holiday period,,, so kick hny and pk would fight for the top spot,,,unfortunately hrithik hasn’t got the perfect holiday period this time due to his injury but bang bang still looks a 200cr movie -stylish action movie like dhoom but with both proper dancers in hrithik and Katrina,,,if the music catches up then the movie would surely be 200cr+

  • And yes jai ho won’t cross 180cr for sure
1 year long wait and all the trailers are straight from his previous movies,,, salman needs to do something different

  • 1. Bang bang
    2. Peekey
    3. Singham 2
    4. Happy New Year
    5. Kick
    6. Jai Ho
    7. Jagaa Jasoos
    8. Action Jackson
    9. Holiday
    10.Bombay Velvet

  • Taran Adarsh tweet………..
    taran adarsh ?@taran_adarsh 8 Jan

#Dhoom3 [3rd Week] Wed ? 1.73 cr. Grand total: ? 276.09 cr nett. Hindi + Tamil + Telugu versions. India biz only.

  • taran adarsh @taran_ adarsh 56m
    #Dhoom3 language-wise breakup: Hindi ? 263.41 cr, Tamil & Telugu ? 12.68 cr. Grand total: ? 276.09 cr nett. India biz only.

  • Jai ho behind Bang Bang unbelievable… Movie should be hot favrt @ present.. wereas HNY and PK is leading the chart

  • No surprise at the top! Can’t help myself from posting one of my own (in my opinion) –

    1. P.K. (Rajkumar Hirani + Aamir Khan) Need I say more? Okay, I will, Aamir might be playing an Alien in it, and it is a satire on GOD, bound to create a lot of buzz and controversies)

    2. HNY/Kick (Its all about star power and their fans’ anticipation here, with big Holiday period)

    3. Kick/HNY (See above)

    4. Bang Bang (Arguably, Hrithik’s 1st full on entertainment film after Dhoom 2)

    5. Jai Ho (Music and trailer in parts didn’t excite me much + non holiday release, still capable of breaking many records as a Salman film)

    6. Singham 2 (Sequel of a very massy and liked film + Rohit-Ajay combo, could be Ajay’s biggest hit till date)

    7. Holiday (Remake of a very successful and well made film, could be Akshay’s biggest hit till date)

    8. Action Jackson (Ajay and Prabhudeva at their best)

    9. Jagga Jasoos (Seems like a comic thriller, should be a good one)

    10. Bombay Velvet (Looks different and exciting, but also risky at the same time)

Any movie out of those failing to collect 100Cr at least would be a disappointment, and any movie from top-5 collecting anything less than 150Cr would be a disappointment. Top-7 have potential to collect more than 200Cr in India alone.

  • Bang bang will gang bang all other movies and stay no.1 ..
Hrithik in full fledge entertainer..rem dhoom2?
Superhero will make it bigger than dhoom ..
    Just wait for the storm..

  • 1.Bobbey Velvet is the Best film in 2014

    Ranbir And Anushka Are Rocks

    2. Kick
    3.Bang Bang
    3. P.K
    4. HNY
    5.Jai Ho

  • Only eagerly waiting for “HAPPY NEW YEAR”. Also for PK,but not because of Aamir only because of Raju Hirani.

  • Indicine have gone mad…. how come happy new year be in front of kick & jai ho… HNY should be somewhere at no. 4 or 5…..

  • horrible ranking by indicine, kick is the only film which ensures the record opening .so how can you place it under happy new year/tees maar khan 2/players 2…kick will kick other films and will take top spot at box office…
