Shocking! The jinxed third week of November for Bollywood releases

Happy Ending is one of the biggest disasters of the year, as the film is likely to collect less than Rs 14 crore in its first weekend at the box office. Ironically, most Bollywood films released in the 3rd week of November have suffered the same fate in the last 12 years – you read that right! 2012 and 2004 were the only exceptions, only because no film released in the jinxed third week of the penultimate month of the year.

Last year, Dharma Productions’ Gori Tere Pyaar Mein released in theatres on November 21st and collected Rs 9.65 crore in its first weekend. The film was Dharma’s biggest disaster in recent times. In 2012, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar had a open second week, and both films didn’t do as well as they were expected to.

In 2011, Shubh Mukherjee’s Shakal Pe Mat Ja opened to empty houses. 2010 witnessed the release of Guzaarish, a film that will be remembered as the worst opening that a Hrithik Roshan film has taken since his career low between 2001 – 2002. Shahrukh Bola “Khoobsurat Hai Tu” also released in the same week featuring Shahrukh Khan in a special appearance, that movie didn’t work either.

Dharma released their Saif Ali Khan – Kareena Kapoor starrer Kurbaan during the same week in 2009, the movie failed. Salman Khan tried his luck too with Subhash Ghai’s Yuvraaj co-starring Katrina Kaif. Disaster.

Below is a list of movies that released in the 3rd week of November along with box office verdicts.

  • 2014 Happy Ending – Disaster
  • 2013 Gori Tere Pyaar Mein – Disaster
  • 2012 No release

  • Interesting articles. Another thing is that Happy Endings had Zero hype. People have finished watching biggies like BangBang and HNY in October. Now they’re waiting for PK in December. So all these unpopular Kill Dil,shaukeens had flopped and now Happy Ending has become a Disaster. Even last year all the films like GTPM,SSTG,Bullet raja who came after the period of K3,Ramleela and before Dhoom 3 were flops. Even R Rajkumar did only 63 crores of bussiness.
All the best to Ungli and Action Jackson! Wish PK becomes huge.

  • Guzaarish is one of the slowest and dark films of Bollywood just like Black! Also, it came after Flop Kites which was the most hyped film of 2010 and was even expected to break the records of 3 idiots with good WOM by some trade pandits. But sadly, it wasn’t for indians!

  • and this nov is d worst nov in a long time.every yr there hv been 2-3 solid hits like k3,ram leela, jthj, tdp, rockstar, apkgk, taalash, paa, etc but this nov all flops.hope ungli bcms a hit otherwise horror period for exhibitors and distributor

  • I think Bollywood is suffering bcz of postponement of Bombay Velvet from Nov. BV would have atleast got a huge opening because of superb star cast

  • Clearly luck is not favouring Saif.He tried something different last year and Bullet Raja despite being a decent movie was a flop at bo.And when he came back to his comfort zone with HE the movie is not doing well despite good wom.

  • Nice observation indicine…
But also see the kind of films that have released during this jinxed period..
Guzaarish was’nt for everyone,GTPM n HE had dull trailers, nothing much exciting.
    Same with yuvvraj!

  • This year’s 2 biggest disasters are from Saif ali khan’s production house,Illuminati

Lekar hum deewana dil(remember that film):music by ar rehman, directed by imtiaz ali’s brother, effusive promotion, launching of a kapoor family lad..
    Result:lifetime 1.50crs..lol

  • Really november was too dull this year…
    Waiting for ungli!!

    Indicine,why is’nt kjo promoting it?? Ask him…

  • @nipun:We should not say like that r..rajkumar did only 63cr..bcoz this is the highest coll. for a shahid film..

  • Even Ungli is not going to open well..should open around same mark as raja natwarlal or a bit higher..content needs to be good.

  • Well really this cannot be a coincidence every year. There is something strange about this 3rd week of november. However I still believe its more about the poor films than the release dates. None if the films above have been able to get good wom (except Guzaarish). Even happy ending has had very mix reaponse. Also saif is no big star, he never was. I expect a good commercial film to change the fate of this release date and may even enter the 100 club some day.

  • 3rd week falls between the end of festive season and beginning of first week of decembee(Winter Season)….Though Happy Ending should have done some good business….Movie was a decent watch…..So that means all eyes on Action Jackson….Lets hope for the best…!!

  • Sunny deol starrerSingh sahab the great collected 35 cr n gtpm collected 19 cr.
Sunny deol starrer collected almost double of dharma movie.
Sstg had no hype,no good songs, flop trailers.
Haven’t u guyz shocked how a sunny deol starrer collected 35cr inspite of a clash with kareena-imran movie.
    My analysis :-
    1) gtpm – a bad movie, totally thanda chemistry – 19cr.
    2) sstg – -ve reviews,sunny deol,bad movie,songs,promos all bad n terrible – 35 cr.
Combined total of gtpm n sstg is 54 cr which released on same date 21 november which is not bad considering they were bad films.
All this is fake. Gud films which r promoted succeed . Bad films fail.

U don’t expect movies like shakal pe mat ja,taj, rehgujar , out of control to be success in any scenario.
Despite being bad films, gtpm n sstg collected 54 cr on 21 november. It is very gud.

  • Out of all these movies i have seen Happy Ending, Guzaarish, Kurbaan, Yuvraaj and Goal . Except Guzaarish all the movies were average or craps . I am really shocked to see this list it cannot be called as coincidence because it has happened in 12 out of 14 years . Happy Ending
FFlopped because there was nothing new in the movie and the 2nd half was stretched . Guzaarish flopped because Hrithik was coming from a flop with Kites and Indian Audiences do
Not like such kind of cinema . Kurbaan was really a bad movie and also created unnecessary controversy because of Bold scenes between Saif and Kareena . Yuvraaj was too much of a Melodramatic movie . Subhash Ghai made a 90’S kind of movie . Anil
Kapoor was fantastic as Gyanesh . Goal was a stupid movie making a complete mockery of Sports Genre and also showing that Football is not a team game but an individual’S game . Shakal Pe Mat Jaa, Rehguzar, Taj Mahal, Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena and Out Of Control were flops and disasters because they had no star value .

  • And by the way except for Happy Ending….Other movies that released during this period were Nothing but 2hrs of torture

  • @babaji ka thullu
yes agree!! Karan johar is biased producer. I think he promotes only those actors which look like gay icons or models. Really feeling bad the way he promoted ungli.

  • Yuvraaj flopped bcos it was set in Europe and starred Salman. Unfortunately there are not many rickshaws in Austria and also bhojpuris cannot go there. So it was rejected by most of illiterate people who watch Sallu films.

  • Austria is a clean country where noone spits on the road like bhojpur. So Sallu fans were disappointed seeing such a clean places as most of them are illiterate and are used to chewing paan and spitting everywhere.

  • This is just a co-incidence…if diwali falls in November thn thr shd be heavy growth in films business…last year we saw this thing with krrish 3 and ramleela collecting huge numbers and next year too we will witness the biggest family entertainer from the very prestigious rajshri production’s biggest movie in last 16 years starting todays no : 1 actor salman khan in and as ” Prem ” ratan dhan payo…btw tomorrow 24th October…#8yearsofdhoom : 2…

  • Two types of moviegoers
1.Sensible who dont like masala action
2.Illiterate who like one man kicking 50 people at a time, spitting paan evrywhere, and actors jumping like monkeys
Sallus movies are watched by 2 nd type people

  • Next year “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” Will be release in November… (Diwali Weekend) … The History Might Be Remain Like Before “Flops & Disasters” Or Re-Create New History… Now, Wait For Diwali 2015…
