Shivaay Total Box Office Collections and Verdict

Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay was one of the biggest releases of the year. The box office expectations from the film, soon after the release of the theatrical trailer, were immense. It was expected to get somewhere close to Ajay’s highest career grosser ‘Singham Returns’ and also maintain a comfortable lead over the other Diwali release ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’.

However, that wasn’t to be as the Karan Johar directed film maintained a healthy lead right from the first day of release, including on the big Diwali holiday on its first Monday.

For a film made on a budget of Rs 110 crore – including print and marketing, but excluding Ajay’s acting / direction fee, Shivaay had to collect somewhere around 125 crore to cover the costs of the distributors.

For a section of the trade that is calling the film an ‘average’ grosser, even Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN, which was made at approximately the same costs and distributed worldwide by Yash Raj Films themselves – made more money than Shivaay. While Shivaay will earn a little more from the domestic box office, FAN grossed about 6-7 times more at the overseas box office.

Every single investor, whether it’s the producer (Ajay Devgn) or the domestic distributors will end up in the red – more so if distributors have to be compensated for the losses.

The trend was good and the film sustained well in Week 2, but the level of business over the first few days was too low for Shivaay to have any chance of recovering costs. The problem was the multiplex business, which was poor throughout.

  • Reports are that Ajay devgn is going to shelve Sons of Sardar after the disastrous result of Shivaay . He doesn’t want to take risk again.

  • Reasons why Shivaay was flop at boxoffice.
    Incoherent.
    Incomplete.
Technically strong film making i.e. cinematography, background score etc.
    Delusional in spots.
    Poor screenplay.
The length of the movie doesn’t need to be this long to demonstrate emotional depth.

  • It was a disaster overseas – in part because of the clash. Karan Johan movies have good distributor and audience support in most overseas markets, and that showed. The loss of the Pakistan market surely hurt ADHM more, but Shivaay probably took some loss too.

  • It has a profil of 0.45crs till now(for producers) which will increase by 6-9cr. So isnt it a below average?
BTW, Shivaay is an underrated movie?

    • @Tahshir, it had to do 125 crore domestic to recover costs of distributors. So it’s a theatrical flop, irrespective. Else films like Jai Ho and Dilwale were hugely profitable for the producers.

  • @indicine u want us to beleive an urban & multiplex oriented film adhm getting 45 crore satellite rights and mass film shivaay getting 40 crores.

sites like addatoday showing real satellite price of adhm which is 25-30 crores.

  • what i have learned in last two years about indicine is that ,
1)they like srk very much & want him to be no 1 bollywood actor.
    2) they hate salman khan but salman doesnt giving them any chance to talk bad about him regarding boxoffice and films thus whenever any bad news about salman khan regarding court cases comes they were always the first site to publish it.

    3) they literally hate ajay devgn
they publish racial comments like kalva, koyla refering to devgn but dont publish chakka word for kjo who actually is ….

  • Had Ajay released this movie solo, it would have been a hit. If not hit, Average for sure.
    Ajay’s bad luck.

He must understand that when clashes happen, they don’t always turn out to be like Son of Sardaar & Jab tak hai jaan.
They might turn out like Bajirao Mastani & Dilwale.

  • Ajay should understand that he is’nt a good director. Acting and Directing are very different things. Everyone can’t be an Aamir Khan or Farhan Akhtar. Shivaay could have been a better move if a good director had handled the project.

  • @vicky, Indicine publishes more articles of Srk bcoz he has the highest popularity on this site. It doesn’t matter whether the article is about Srk or not, someone has to mention him in his comment, whether it’s good or bad. Just like u did right now. Article is about Shivaay and u r mentioning Srk, that says it all.

I tell u that I’m not an Srk fan.

  • I said it several times n I say it again ajay even though a brilliant actor don’t hv much fan following as far as opening is concerned and in multiplexes he is much below than youngsters forget comparison with khans,hr n akki.he desperately needs rohit shetty badly otherwise he is a gone case.even with 13 CR’s manipulation he is struggling to cross 100 CR’s.tough luck devgan ..

  • I’m happy not because the film flopped but for people’s verdict towards it… It’s a slap on arrogance n cheapness shown.. ‘Very relaxed’…

  • Shivay relates to a hindu god name. That’s why some pseudo secular reviewer and audience spread negativity about the film.

  • Another biased comment by indicine..it’s all praises for that above average 115 cr ADHM as if its done some extraordinary business..even less commercial films like airlift n rustom did more business n so did dhoni..rustom n bajirao did much more business even after clash..Shivaay has only one face..ajay devgn..100 cr is on the cards n that should safely give it average status safely…how can budget be 115 cr when there is no leading actors fees involved..ajay did it for free..

  • @indicine…when srk fan and dilwale released.. They released an article which said if dilwale collects between 130-150 its a flop less than 130 disaster…at least over 160 for average…but when dilwale collected 148 they gave it average status..ditto for FAN..they said less than 90 cr is a disaster.. 90-110 is a flop..but for 85 cr FAN they gave flop status when it’s actually a disaster

  • As per BOI, Shivaay has a landing cost of 103 cr and is an AVERAGE grosser. Despite the lower collections, it would record higher theatrical footfalls than ADHM, thanks to its patronizing audience in tier 2 and 3 cities. Its only the metropolitan distributors and overseas distributors who’d lose out on the film. No amount of ranting from SRK/Johar fanboys can change the fact that footfalls is directly proportional to popularity and even by Khan fansite BOI’s lowered numbers, Shivaay still has higher footfalls than ADHM.
