Shivaay Total Box Office Collections and Verdict

Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay was one of the biggest releases of the year. The box office expectations from the film, soon after the release of the theatrical trailer, were immense. It was expected to get somewhere close to Ajay’s highest career grosser ‘Singham Returns’ and also maintain a comfortable lead over the other Diwali release ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’.

However, that wasn’t to be as the Karan Johar directed film maintained a healthy lead right from the first day of release, including on the big Diwali holiday on its first Monday.

For a film made on a budget of Rs 110 crore – including print and marketing, but excluding Ajay’s acting / direction fee, Shivaay had to collect somewhere around 125 crore to cover the costs of the distributors.

For a section of the trade that is calling the film an ‘average’ grosser, even Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN, which was made at approximately the same costs and distributed worldwide by Yash Raj Films themselves – made more money than Shivaay. While Shivaay will earn a little more from the domestic box office, FAN grossed about 6-7 times more at the overseas box office.

Every single investor, whether it’s the producer (Ajay Devgn) or the domestic distributors will end up in the red – more so if distributors have to be compensated for the losses.

The trend was good and the film sustained well in Week 2, but the level of business over the first few days was too low for Shivaay to have any chance of recovering costs. The problem was the multiplex business, which was poor throughout.

  • Some useless fan of srk talking for manipulate they forget srk is king of manipulating leave life time he has manipulate 9 cr with opening day itself

  • Happy that Ajay’s #Shivaay is not a complete washout like Bombay velvet, Mohenjodaro, Mirziya .. Ajay has always been a minimum guarantee actor , whose films always recover costs and even if they flop the margin of loss is very less to producers/ distributors.

Shivaay was a big film as far as making costs are involved. But , well he tried and he succeeded to an extent bcoz other than Ajay there was no selling point in the film. The music also didnt work .

Ajay, eventhough not as good looking at khans, kapoors , kumars have been in the industry bcoz of his huge talent and charisma . He doesnt dance, he is black in color, but still people love him .. Even though all media thrased his shivaay film , it made nearly 100 cr in domestic box office ..

Dont worry ajay , we are with you .. We will watch all ur films .. Waiting for ur films especially Golmaal 4 and Singam 3 .. Keep rocking

  • An outright action thriller (a genre that never really works among the local audiences as well as romance, comedy and drama) with just one known face and a lackluster romantic track and zero comedy generates more footfalls than a tried and tested romantic comedy genre with urban star Ranbir and Anushka in the lead, chartbuster music and Karan Johar as director and yet KJO/SRK fanboys claim that ADHM has “demolished” Shivaay! Wow

  • Indicine shivay footfalls are higher then ADHM. and one think is that he is not like bhagoda who run away from Eid. he is singham and he will come back on diwali i m sure and that to be with roar.. Asli Singham.

  • Vicky well said , i too agree indicine gives favour to ranbir ,karan johar, srk most , and yrf films .they are the favourates for indicine.

  • Hey indicine Oops sorry paid media where is Shivaay day wise total collection like Adhm.Shivaay beat Adhm in 2nd week but u didnot show it bcz u r paid to do so.

  • Indicine you dont think that in shivaay there was only ajay and he was competing with a multistarer all top starcast with karan as a director , so it was obvious that shivaay couldnt compete unless its has top content. But still ajay manage to give the competetion. Now tell me in hollywood too if marvel films with all superheroes releases with another superhero like captain america then who gonna win all know, so kindly respect ajay too.

  • @viky why you are crying here??
    At Indicine.
We can see your frustration after Shivvay disaster.

Before Shivvay release some of Ajay Devgan fan said that NRI people waiting for this movie.

And after release it is just collect 8 cr from overseas.

  • If we are talking about profit for producers, then shouldn’t we include the amount they got from the distribution right for both the movies? Correct me if I’m missing something.

  • 2 big reasons of shivay failure.

Ajay’s Low fan following in cities & Clash with ADHM.

Drishym – 65 Lifetime TRADE despite being outstanding movie.

Shivay – 9 cr opening TRADE despite having outstanding trailer . Lifetime 90 TRADE

    He is a legend..That’s it

  • @BK fan don’t you consider ajay a popular star? Aren’t you aware of the fact that shivay trailer was immensely praise compare To ADHM?

Adhm has average trailer while shivay outstanding … Ajay working for 25 years still 9 cr opening…lol

  • Ajay will take it to 100 cr..So Based on producer collection Average verdict…In real it’s a flop..

  • “Every single investor, whether it’s the producer (Ajay Devgn) or the domestic distributors will end up in the red – more so if distributors have to be compensated for the losses”
With distributor break even theatrical business of 125 cr (as per Indicine), the price at which Shivaay was sold to distributors is roughly 62-68 cr (depends on distributor share). Hence, producers have a recovery of 55 cr (ancillary income) + 65 cr (cost to distributor) = 120 cr. Clearly, producers are not in the red.
Now, the distributors (both domestic and overseas) need a share of roughly 65 cr, and Shivaay, in all probability will end with a share of 60 cr. Distributors, on the whole, face a loss of 5 cr which can easily be compensated from the 10 cr profit of the producers. Furthermore, the losses to distributors are not distributed evenly, with distributors at metros and overseas ending up in the red while those in the A (to an extent), B and C centres making a neat profit.
Based on my analysis, Shivaay deserves at least an Average tag, if not more. The likes of Rao.One, Jai Ho and Dilwale managed Above Average to Semi-Hit to Hit (Ra.One) tags despite losses to distributors in some circuits.

  • @Anuj, thrillers have always working in bollywood..there isn’t a time when they did not…every single Emraan Hashmi hit film is a thriller and films like Ek Tha Tiger are also known as thrillers in the rest of the world and they have worked everywhere..

  • If shivaay was starring srkay then with the same budget nd collections movie wil b declard as a HIT Like Bra.1…power of srkay…the secret behind the consistency
