Had decided to post my review by night but couldn’t hold my excitement, hence posting it now itself.

Note: As far as reviews are concerned , I try to be brutally honest. However, I should be excused, if at any instance, I sound like a hardcore SRK fan instead of a neutral movie buff.

So here we go :

Instead of getting into the technical terms like screenplay and editing , I will directly come to the +ve’s and -ve’s of Raees.

Positives :

Let’s discuss each segment in detail.

1. Acting : SRK has nailed it and he is fantastic as usual. He proves it yet again that when it comes to play an antagonist he has no match. (Just look at his eyes when he kills Atul Kulkarni and Mooosa, intensity says it all. He is equally good expressing his resentment when Government declares his ambitious project as part of agricultural land). However, it’s Nawazuddin who steals the show. I remember when Raees trailer was out , many called Nawaz the major disappointment of Raees. Today I urge those people- just go and watch him. He is absolutely amazing and comes out as a winner when the movie gets over.
There was nothing much to do for Mahira, but even in that small space (which was allocated to her), she disappoints and looks misfit for her role.

2. Action :

Action is “Desi” and typical of 70-80s era. You are bound to remember Big B and Dharam Paji while watching the action sequences as mostly they follow the same lines.
Particularly, the fight sequences of Butcher market and one took place in truck are commendable.

3. Songs :

What I liked is none of the songs are misplaced. Every song follows a sequence and connects directly to the movie, so audience will never feel that songs are forced (as it happens with most of the movies now-a-days).
I didn’t like Udi-Udi at the time of it’s release, but it looks absolutely mesmerizing on big screen.

4. Dialogues :

They are the heart of this movie. You will listen a lot of cheers and whistles with every dialogues. I was watching it in plex but I can imagine what euphoria these dialogues would have created on single screens.

Negatives :

*******************************************************************
1. Story is not well connected :

It seems Dholakia had tried everything which was available in his platter.
He drives a number of parallel events/issues together, yet fails to establish a convincing connectivity between them. Examples of such individual segments are –

Nawaz chasing SRK
Corruption (in police department)
Political conspiracy
Secularism
Communal riots
Philanthropic aspect of Raees
Plight of workers working in unorganized sector

He deals with all the above topics and honestly, they all are shot well but he fails to bind them together at the end.
So, though people enjoy these sequences thoroughly (honestly, each of these segments are well crafted individually) at the end they look confuse as what they have gained from Raees- the movie as whole.

2. SRK-Mahira Chemistry :

This is yet another drawback and at times their chemistry looks forced. I felt a heroine was added to this movie only to strengthen the commercial aspects of Raees else there was no need for a leading lady as such.

3. Climax : It was surreal for me though it is ‘strictly’ individual opinion of mine.

Conclusion :

************************************************

Now comes the major question- whether one should watch or skip Raees.

I would categorize the audience into three groups and pass my remarks accordingly.

1. SRK haters : These are the people who always have a prejudice about SRK movies and they don’t even appreciate the positive aspects of his movies. If you are one among them, skip it as you will not like it at all.

2. Neutral audiences :

Please understand that the decision – whether to watch Raees or not- totally depends upon your ‘Taste’. Raees is not a Dangal, Bajrangi Bhaijan or CDI. If you love wholesome entertainment and want to be completely engaged and involved for two and half hours, then Raees is for you. I guarantee it you will never get bored and will thoroughly enjoy the movie.
However, if you are expecting Raees to be a perfect crime thriller with major twist and turns then I would request you to give it a miss. Because story is quite predictable and what makes it enjoyable is the characterization and performance of the casts, specially SRK and Nawaz and not the story as a whole.

3. SRK fans : Book your tickets if you have not already. You will love this badass yet sensitive Avatar of SRK.

**************************************************************

Rating : *** (3/5) (I always get afraid while allocating *(stars) to a movie because I am not good at it. Still trying my hands for the first time :P )

************************************************

Commercial side :

Raees is already a winner at single screens and it will attract large number of audience in coming days. What remains to be seen is, how it fairs at multiplexes. Though SRK’s presence has ensured fair occupancy and phenomenal advance booking for first three days, but will that continue when the actual weekend (Sat-Sun) peeps in, that’s the biggest question.
If Kaabil is anything near to the reviews what it has received, it will put a formidable competition in front of Raees.

My expectations : Will wrap up within 150 cr (HIT)

  • Good reviews bad reviews doesn’t matter now waiting for audience response hope both movies do good business coz i like the humble hritick. both need a box office success

  • Will watch it tomorrow with my frnd but I don’t think this movie will be good but what I do now I have booked ticket and can’t return it.

  • Even though I am not a SRK fan but I managed to see Raees first day first show thanks to my close friend who is hard core SRK fan and he being part of SRKUniverse.com club he managed to get 11 of us to watch as Raees exclusive show (FDFS) in Bangalore.

Coming to movie, It is all about Raees. It is about how he ventured into world of bootlegging, ruled and how he was a victim of his own actions even though it was unintentional. The story line is very predictable but you will not feel bored. The first half is rollicking and it has every element what a commercial port boiler will have however the second half is bit dragged and barring couple of parts it wont excite you much or matches to the first half. The most thrilling part of the movie I found was when Raees halts the yatra which passes from his area. This clearly showcase the real Raees and was part of first teaser too (SRK walking with stick in hand amidst smoke). I wish we had more moments like that. Another part was killing of Atul Kulkarni with ‘Laila’ song in backdrop.

The movie belongs to only two and they are SRK and Nawaz. Nawazuddin has given stellar performance he is improving with each movie. One must just watch his entry (even though it is comical but one of the best entry) and he follows it with great intensity and dialogue delivery. Mahira looks good but she is not perfect fit. I would like to appreciate one man here without taking away credit from two and it is Zeeshan Sayed (Raees’ friend Sadiq), he played his part very well. Music is good but nothing great. 3 songs stands out in album Udi Udi, Zaalima and Dhingana. Raees bhai che looks good on screen but it lacks in lyrics and music.

Direction is a big let down going by Raees teaser and promos. People had expected more and it is not what it portrayed by promos. However Rahul Dhalokia have kept the things simple and moving (specially first half). There are no unexpected twists and any surprises. There was no need for director to include a reference of 1993 blasts (spoiler) which brings the downfall of Raees. He could have done it in different and better way. Also it is bit confusing when SRK comes to surrender before climax he brings media along with him. Audience think that he will be jailed and may not be encountered however it actually happens opposite of it. It is bit confusing and do not understand why it was shown like that if it has to end with Raees’ life.

On the whole Raees is a watchable fare but do not carry the expectations which you build due to over the top promos and teaser/trailer. For me, it is much better movie of SRK since Don 2 and but not exactly like ‘Apna Time Shuru’ type wala movie.

Dialogues are the soul of this movie, the writer deserve an award for same.

    My rating : 3 stars ***

  • Go go go for kaabil its a diffrent xperince, nothing new in story but the screenplay is interesting…everytimerohan goin to take revenge…twist happens and he recovers, the final twist is highly unpredictable…

  • #Raees
Again a down srk carrier.. Frankly they choose wrong director for SRK movie.. Rahul Dholokia a off beat movie director.. In this movie he just trying his movie to make commercial with some songs and an item song with Sunny.. But sadly he failed miserably…
They bring Nawaz against SRK, but the director waste all the talent of Nawaz..

Story- Can’t understand where movie is going on.. it’s a off beat movie , which never expect from a commercial Star SRK.. SO WRONG SCRIPT CHOOSE BY SRK

Box office- 100 cr is big huddle for the movie now.. Srk fan come to see movie.. Again Srk fail to bring natural audience.. lets see at this point #kaabil may take over the box office..

    Conclusion
#KAABIL To Raees nikle but #Raees Kaabil nehi..

  • Really funny review from Xsona

On the whole, RAEES is a sure-shot hit. To state that SRK is sensational would be an understatement. The love, adulation and stardom that he attained in his early films will be showered on him yet again in RAEES. A few more factors contribute too: Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s winning act, the aimed-at-masses written material and of course, the gripping finale. As far as the BO is concerned, there’s no stopping this one. An outright winner. Just don’t miss it!

On the whole, Raees will turn out to be a comfortable winner at the ticket windows. Despite a routine story, it has a lot of masala for the audience to keep them satisfied. Business in the first five-day weekend will be phenomenal. Single-screen cinemas will see surging crowds of the kind not seen too often these days.

The trouble is that Rahul is trying to create a gritty crime drama but he is also upholding the myth of the superstar Shah Rukh Khan. So the character must walk a tightrope and somehow be a noble badassThe best way to enjoy Raees then is to manage expectations first. This is an uneven film. In places, you will applaud and whistle. But you might also find yourself utterly exhausted. Still, as the girl in Dangal so memorably put it: Shah Rukh ko na nahi bolte. Paap lagta hai.

Harking back to the days of the anti-hero of the pre-Shah Rukh Khan era, Raees is a gangster saga with a contemporary spin. It takes recourse to subtle sleights of new-age style to compensate for what it lacks in terms of thematic essence and narrative pace. It makes a fair fist of the palpably onerous task. Shah Rukh shrugs off his defining starry mannerisms, embraces physical attributes and accessories designed to convey an air of to-hell-with-the-world insouciance, and becomes an effective anchor for a film that hinges overly on his box office clout to carry it across the finishing line.

It is a story whose denouement is clear almost as soon the film rolls, and yet, if you sit through the film it is only to see the superstar play a character he has never done. So fatally flawed that even the redeeming features are not enough. It sure is a very bold Shah Rukh Khan who has stepped out of his comfort zone. Will the audience do so, too?

Shah Rukh Khan returns in and as Raees , a golden hearted mobster who does bad things for a good cause. It is a role constructed to grab back his pole position, and to that end Shah Rukh Khan strains at fulfilling every single point of the In and As trope. He sings and dances, he fights and romances: he also tries to fulfil the outlines of a character. And that’s where the film gets stuck, between the two stools of restraint and full blown tamasha

Raees is a typical ’80s potboiler. Disturbingly, like commercial cinema from that period, the moral compass is a bit off Yet, the problem is fundamental: the writing is shoddy and unoriginal. And by the time it wades into certain true events, it is left with too little time and meaning. Raees perhaps works only as an SRK showcase. But we’ve seen many of those already.
