Malayalam 100 crore film: Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan becomes the first!

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s latest film ‘Pulimurugan’ has created history by becoming the first Malayalam film to cross the 100 crore mark at the box office.

Made on a budget of Rs 24 crore, ‘Pulimurugan’ released in theatres on the 7th of last month (October). The film collected Rs 4.05 crore at the Kerala box office on its opening day, making it the highest opening day grosser ever for a Malayalam film and the second highest of all time behind Rajnikanth’s Kabali.

The film continued its good run on its second day by collecting Rs 4.03 crore. On the third day, ‘Pulimurugan’ went on to record the highest single-day collections of all-time at the Kerala box office, by collecting Rs 4.83 crore on Sunday.

Since then, the film has sustained well enough to cross the 100 crore mark, including collections from other South states where the film was released.

‘Pulimurugan’ has also exceeded expectations at the UAE Box office by collecting nearly 14 crore in its first weekend.

The film revolves around the incidents that occur in the life of Murugan (Mohanlal), a lorry driver who has vengeance against Tiger (Varayan Puli). Murugan lost his parents quite early and loves his brother more than anything else. Even from his young age he has developed extraordinary skills that could aid him in killing tigers that create havoc in the forest settlement known as Puliyoor. He is not a hunter but he kills tiger that attack humans. The story moves into a few challenges that Murugan has to encounter in his life, both from wild animal and wild human beings. How he fights the enemies including tiger forms the crux of the story.
