Jai Ho HIT or FLOP: Box Office Prediction

Jai Ho marks the return of Salman Khan to the silver screen after a gap of 13 months. The success that the superstar has enjoyed in the last few years has been remarkable to say the least. Each of his last 5 films have opened to packed houses across the country and have gone on to be huge blockbusters.

However, Jai Ho will be Salman’s biggest test as the film is almost entirely riding on his star power. Even though his other films opened well due to his presence, there were several other factors that helped:

  • Ready: Successful director, decent supporting cast, super-hit music, post-IPL
  • Bodyguard: Established heroine, popular music, good release date
  • Ek Tha Tiger: Successful director, top leading lady, big banner, perfect release date, high production values
  • Dabangg 2: Keenly awaited sequel, iconic character of Chulbul Pandey, fairly popular music, Christmas / New Year weekend.

Jai Ho has none of those. The music hasn’t really caught on, the production values aren’t as high as films like Dhoom 3 or Ek Tha Tiger, the film has a new leading lady (Daisy Shah) and director Sohail Khan’s last film (Maine Dil Tujhko Diya – 2002) was a box office dud. Also, unlike any other Salman film in the last 3 years, Jai Ho will have a normal non-holiday release as Republic Day falls on a Sunday.

Jai Ho has only two factors in its favour – the presence of arguably the biggest superstar in India and the fact that the film is a remake of a hugely popular Telugu film (Stalin).

Jai Ho Box Office Prediction

Jai Ho Box Office Prediction

While the trade has its fingers-crossed hoping for a opening that is on-par or slightly lesser than ‘Dhoom 3’, we expect the film to collect around 24-25 crore on its opening day.

Predictions for the remaining days, depending on the response that the film gets, is as follows:

IF VERY GOOD (positive word-of-mouth)

  • Friday – 25 cr
  • Saturday – 27 cr
  • Sunday – 30 cr (Republic Day)
  • Weekend – 82 cr
  • First Week –  130 cr
  • Final – 200 cr+ (Blockbuster)

IF AVERAGE (mixed response)

  • Friday – 25 cr
  • Saturday – 24 cr
  • Sunday – 27 cr
  • Weekend – 76 cr
  • First Week –  115 cr
  • Final – 160 cr (Super Hit)

IF BAD (worst case scenario)

  • Friday – 24 cr
  • Saturday – 19 cr
  • Sunday – 22 cr (Republic Day)
  • Weekend – 65 cr
  • First Week –  95 cr
  • Final – 110 cr

Quite obviously, if the content is strong then nothing can stop Jai Ho from succeeding at the box office. If reports are excellent, the film could even cross the 200 crore mark. But the response to most big films is either mixed or negative (classics like 3 Idiots that manage to tick every box are rare). So, as long as Jai Ho turns out to be a decent entertainer it should do well.

The film has absolutely no major competition in the next two weeks and should continue to do well at single-screens even after the release of Hasee Toh Phasee on Feb 7th.

Jai Ho will get a wide release in India, about the same release size as big films like Chennai Express. The advance booking opened on Monday and the response has been excellent at single screens where the Salman starrer is expected to take a record-breaking start. The advance is not so good at multiplexes, but not many even bother to book tickets as tickets are easily available over the counter on working days.

What are your expectations from Jai Ho? Hit or Flop? Will the film go on to be Salman’s 6th blockbuster in a row? Tell us!

  • jai ho will be a big flop people are bored of watching same crap south remakes also in acting salman is big zero lol.

  • Jaiho will collect 1st day 27cr 2nd day 29cr 3rd day 35cr weekend 91cr weekdays 42cr total farst week 133cr nd 2nd week 55cr nd final life time collect 225 cr.all bhai funs jaiho

  • My prediction: (assuming it won’t do good business in multiplexes)- BOI numbers not producers.
    1st day- 22 crores
    2nd day- 21 crores
    3rd day – 25 crores
    Weekend- 68 crores
    1st week – 103 crores
    Lifetime – 145 crores

If does well in multiplexes then 175+ crores for sure.

  • If you are so good in prediction, tell us the exact figure. Don’t beat around the bush by giving us multiple figures. It will collect 208-209 Crores. Mark my word. Blockbuster. Recording breaking in non-holiday release..
I didn’t like the title of this article. We all are going to watch it…

  • Film got huge publicity from saifai mahotsav contoversy so i think film shud open in the range of 28 crs. Lifetime business is depends on how bad the film is. How can indicine put the “if good” and “if average” options? It’s Salman movie and it can never be good or average. Salman movie all about item no. and remakes. I would suggest 3 options:

    IF BAD ( possible scenario)
    Lifetime : 130 crs

IF VERY BAD ( probable scenario)
    Lifetime : 105 crs

IF TERRIBLY BAD ( worst case scenario)
    Lifetime : 70 crs

  • Hope it become better than bodyguard at least
10years ago,KHAKEE released, one of the best films. So i am going to watch it again on DVD since that time was when people recognized Akki’s comic flair

  • 200-225 cr max
His popularity is surely on a decline, which is quite evident from his last release DABBANG2 (160cr) whereas DABBANG was 140 cr. While post to ETT it shud have gone past 200 cr which it didn’t. Anyways it shud be a blockbuster

  • Jai Ho is looking at a strong start at the box office all over but the expectations have also changed after the release of Dhoom 3. Dhoom 3 managed to set a record opening day on a non holiday so where as earlier a 20 crore nett figure was regarded excellent for a non holiday the stakes have gone up for Dhoom 3.

Dhoom 3 had production values which have never been seen before in India and the huge cost was evident in the promos which is not the case with Jai Ho which is a very costly film for the distributors but not in terms of it showing on screen which is important today as consumers are paying high ticket rates so come for the gloss.

So a grand looking film does add to the box office opening which was also proved by Ram – Leela which opened much better than the cast warranted and a lot was to with the fact that the product looked big. Jai Ho has the presence of Salman Khan who is the biggest crowd puller but the market expectations of a 25 crore nett number may be bit too high as the market is basing it on Dhoom 3 collecting nearly 32 crore nett so this should do 25 approx but these things sometimes don’t materialise. The advance at many single screens is actually better than Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express which were top openers of 2013 but multiplexes are less almost all over where advance is open.

The music not being a huge hit does not matter for big stars like Salman Khan but a grand look may be a problem in terms of putting up a very big number (25 crore plus). A superstar, grand look and holiday probably means 37-38 crore nett opening day business today but with Jai Ho it is banking totally on the superstar. The year has started on a slow note with only Yaariyan just about covering costs and being an average fare so it is down to Jai Ho to get the box office going again.

  • jai ho definetely cross 120 cr and get hit status atleast.most handsome khan in bollywood. my prediction 175-185cr

  • Looks like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan have finally decided to end their rivalry and become good friends again. The “Karan Arjun” actors were seen hugging each other again, at the Star Guild Awards 2014, which was held in Mumbai on Thursday. The Star Guild Awards ceremony was hosted by “Jai Ho” star Salman Khan and SRK was the presenter. At the award ceremony, SRK won the award of the Best Entertainer Of The Year for his film “Chennai Express”. When SRK came on stage to receive the award Salman hugged him, which was warmly returned by King Khan. “It feels special to get this award in the company of Salman who is one of the greatest entertainers the country has seen,” Shah Rukh said after receiving the award. Further, Salman asked SRK to say “Jai Ho” thus promoting his film. And surprisingly SRK did say that by raising his hands on the stage. “Jai Ho” is Salman’s upcoming flick which is set to release on 24 January. The “Dabangg” actor has been promoting his film on almost all reality shows on television. Even his close friend, Aamir Khan, is promoting “Jai Ho” on Twitter. Aamir, who takes to Twitter only during films promotions, is quite regular on social networking site nowadays. The “Dhoom 3” star has been posting a tweet everyday talking about the release of “Jai Ho”.
