A week ago, ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ was expected to easily cross the 100 crore mark and the industry had pinned its hope on the film crossing the 150 crore mark. After all, it was Shah Rukh Khan’s return to a genre that has excelled in and delivered the biggest blockbusters of his career.
The film also had the industry’s top leading lady Anushka Sharma and the songs, which are important for romantic films, had gained popularity too even though it did not have a chartbuster.
But less than 6 days after the release of the film, ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ has collected just 55 crore net and has fallen to collections in the 3-crore range. With ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ set to release this weekend and business of ‘JHMS’ not holding up in the first week itself, the Imtiaz Ali directed film is certain to finish with lifetime business of less than 70 crore.
A lifetime total of 65-crore is looking likely and that would mean the film would do the unthinkable. It will fall under the total collections of Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha (2015), Rockstar (2011) and even the 8-year-old film Love Aaj Kal (2009).
To say the absolute least, these are shocking numbers. Even outright multiplex films like ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ used to collected 65 crore in 2015. But here we have a Shah Rukh Khan – Anushka Sharma film, which was sold for very high prices, falling under 70-crore – which in other words, is 40% less than the all-India first day collections of ‘Bahubali 2: The Conclusion’.
Has the expectation and taste of the audience changed after the release of ‘Bahubali 2’ or is it the further increase in entertainment options from online streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Video that’s affecting film business? Could it be the ever increasing ticket prices or is the value of stars reducing?
The questions don’t end there. Has the audience completely lost interest in rom-coms or is Shah Rukh Khan losing his audience due to poor choice of films in the last 3 years?

Yes both of you….you guys have dug your own grave…better you guys realize it the better for you. Hrithik wasted 2 years for a crap called Mohenjo Daro. SRK continuously churning out craps. Both of you had a good opportunity with Raees and Kaabil if they were released alone. But you guys went for a disastrous decision to clash because the EGO WAS BIGGER FOR YOU than BO performance. If released solo Kaabil could have done 125cr+ (Superhit) and Raees 160+ (Superhit)…but instead they finished at 100 and 130 respectively…

@Thug,sorry man.I can agree with u on Hrithik wasting 2 years on a bad movie like mohenjodaro but u simply cant blame Hrithik for Kaabil vs Raees clash.it was only shaharukh and his ego to blame for that clash.how can u announce release of ur movie on the same date that is already booked without consulting that party.If he consulted rakhesh ji before announcing raees on the 26th Jan,i think whole story would be different. u want to play mind game and then when u see that other party is not shifting their movie u go for begging to rakhesh roshan.shaharukh is good bussinessman but no one can go so low like him.Hrithik kept his dignity by not shifting Kaabil to another date.

@indicine, since u look to be in mood to answer, let me ask a very relevant question.
In various articles it is stated that someone has booked screens for 2 weeks & will affect the movie releasing next week. On other hand, we come across articles stating that due to poor performance, screens are re-allocated (mubarkan increased & harry decreased this week). What will happen to Exhibitors who may have signed harry for 2 weeks?

@Love Bollywood, only single-screens / fixed rentals are booked for 2 weeks. It again varies from film to film, depending on several factors like potential of the film at smaller centres etc. JHMS did not get a wide single-screen release. Multiplexes are flexible and it was here that screen/show re-allocation happened.
Due to poor occupancy of JHMS, shows were reduced during weekdays. Mubarakan was doing well, so it got more shows. Also, Mubarakan wasn’t running on as many evening / night shows due to a big film releasing. So it allocated more shows during that crucial 6PM – 9PM period when footfalls at plexes tend to increase.
@Indicine, just wanted to add that I myself booked 7 tickets for Mubarakan yesterday night, and have skipped JHMS although I never miss SRK movie, I watched even Dilwale twice in theatre. I guess it sums up the entire scenario revolving around SRK and his choice of films resulting in poor box office collections.
I never thought I would be skipping a SRK movie altogether when I watched “Fan” first day first show.
3 crores + …I wonder who r these people still watching it. ..they must be either srk fans or some mad people. ..
Imagine had it clashed with Toilet, the collections could be well under 45 cr. Unbelievable!

All these movies releasing now got started before bahubali2 released.Even Tiger Zinda hai has been planned and scripted before bahubali2 storm.So these movie should get affected.

People are ready to pay for the films only worth watching, SRK has lost his script sense and stardom since 2007.SRK is nowhere close to Salman and Amir. Aamir and Salman are real Super stars, then come Akshay.
SRK is media made King Khan. The real KING KHANS are Salman and Aamir.
SRK lost his Stardom by giving 6 consecutive films in average to Flop to Disaster.
‘JHMS’ is already confirmed Disaster from Trade Pundits due to collections get crashed day by day.
SRK is no more super star. He is behind Akshay, who has given consecutive three successful films.

Once you see the scale of Bahubali movie, there is absolutely no way we can expect anything less.
Bollywood traditionally copied either hollywood/korean movies or south indian movies to make money. Now, audience has access to all cinemas at cheaper prices. Unless Bollywood delivers original and exciting content, there is no interest whatsoever to spend such huge sums on ticket to see same old shit.
the film worldwide collection is over 100cr so how the hell u can call this movie a disaster ? if any lalu panju movie does good collection in overseas u guys include that collection an make the movie hit average ? i am disappointed in srk but believe me u guys are worse even srk fans are worse ?
All the reason mentioned by the article may be the reason of the disastrous run of bollywood since Baahubali. But, according to me. Two of them are most important factors behind this.
1) The content is not there. Most of the film’s content can’t relate to the PAN INDIA audience.
2) The ticket prices are too high to spend in mere 2 hrs. Not only that, the popcorn, cold-drinks and even the price of plain mineral water are way more expensive than it should be. I wish all bollywood movie failed this year so that, they are forced to reduce the ticket prices in order to fill those empty seats.
@ Indicine I made this same assertion in the QandA session buh unfortunately and u to comment but u didn’t. The main reason is the BAAHUBALI effect. Now audience has tasted poison and now there is no going back. They have realised that they have been taken for granted especially by the big wigs, who feel they can just put a face out follow up with some half baked script and serve the public. The public has awaken. Such crap will longer be accepted .Salman Khan the megastar must ensure TZH is a movie that suits his status as the biggest star of the largest film industry in the world not just some rush job .

All these years they were saying SRK never gave a Disaster (not including YLJK as his movie) and now officially, khulle aam, sabke saamney aur 2017 mein bechaarey kingu ne Disaster de di. Ab Dosroon ke flops/disaster ginne ka kuch toh faydaa howa !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be honest I am not liking the downfall of SRK, I want to see on top of the game SRK to compete with Salman (Aamir have left everyone behind and miles ahead). IMO, all the factors like BB2 storm, audience choice, poor script sense of SRK, his fans’ arrogance and dying of Romantic genre contributed to the dismissal performance of JHMS. I hope he realize the situation and start doing some good movies, it is better to try something and fail than doing same rotten stuff and failed. Salman failed with Tubelight but I like the way he took the risk and tried something different. Hope Dwarf will bring back old SRK. All the best !!!!!!!!!!
