IFFA Awards Nominations 2008 – 2009

The IFFA Awards Nominations for the year 2008 – 2009 has been announced. And like most Bollywood award nominations, we have quite a few surprises.

We all know Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador of the IIFA, but does he have control over the nominations? Abhishek Bachchan has been nominated in the Best Actor (Leading Role) category, as well as Best Actor in a Comic Role. If Abhishek’s role was comical then wasn’t SRK’s in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi? If Abhishek indeed goes on to win, it will be very unfortunate. No, not in the Best Actor category, he has literally no chance there. But the comic role award should go to either Tusshar or Anil Kapoor.

Race for Best Story is as stupid as nominting Katrina Kaif for the Best Actress. What was the jury thinking?

Could there be a upset this year at the IFFA? Hrithik Roshan has swept all major awards for Best Actor and so has Priyanka Chopra for Best Actress. Could IFFA surprise by awarding Aamir / SRK the award? Or Aishwarya over Priyanka? Post comments below

  • What is wrong with this jury which selected the nominations
    1. Abhishek Bachchan for dostana does not deserve a nomination in the lead category by any means .. there were numerous choices from which to select .. Abhay Deol was way way better than abhishek in oye lucky lucky oye (give that guy some credit) .. even Rajeev Khandelwaal did a very good job in Aamir .. But as Abhishek is Amitabh’s son he is getting nomination .. And where is Akhsay for Singh is King .. It was one of the biggest hits of last year (Give that guy some due yaar) .. Though the film was bad, credit must be given to him for making the film what it was .. I believe he deserve a nomination if Abhishek does
    2. I cant believe Rab ne was not selected for best music .. It was one of the best albums of last year .. Again Dostana :(

Again I see some SRK fans here thinking that he should win the award for Rab ne .. Come on guys you are not blind enuf to see that Hrithik did a far far superior job than SRK did .. He deserves all the award he can get .. Only person who is close enuf to him is Naseer but Hrithik’s role was much much more challenging and difficult .. I being an Aamir fan dont think that Aamir should win for Ghajini because Hrithik truly deserves this award for his excellent work in Jodha Akbar .. He has given us a classic in Jodha Akbar which we will be able to relish even when we are old and thus it deserves all the accolades it is getting now

  • I agree with Ronnie 100%.Rajiv and Abhay did a much better job than Abhisheikh. Infact even Shahid in Kismet was better than Abhisheikh…

  • Ronnie: I do agree with you about Hrithik that he deserves the best actor award, but Shahrukh too did his best performance as Surindar Sahani in Rabne.. their role were completely different.. Shahrukh did quite a different role in this movie and he was just brilliant, excellent, so was Hrithik, but Hrithik’s role was a “powerful” role in Jodhaa Akbar as it was a historycal movie, so.. we can’t compare their performances.. both of them deserve awards but in different category.. and yes.. Aamir Khan didn’t do anything special in Ghajini.. he can’t win just because the movie did 200crores at the box office!!

What upsets me is why Anoushka Sharma didn’t win any award this year?! She was given a strong and a difficult role in Rabne, and as a newcomer, she was so good, when they value an actor, they should value him in every angle, e.g. Anoushka is cute, loveable and got a strong charisma on the screen, she got an innocent face unlike Asin. Asin.. no.. she’s quite good but not “special” that’s the difference between the two.. I can say that Anoushka is like Sonam Kapoor.. and Asin is like Malika Sherawat.. Malika’s acting is good.. but couldn’t win everyone’s heart. If the actor got this gift from God.. then it’s a credit for him/her which makes them special & different.

  • Fathiya: I agree with you about Anoushka Sharma. I also think she deserve the award more than Asin because her role was more powerful than that of Asin.
But about SRK i am sorry to say this but he can never win an award for a Rab ne. If he does that will very very very unfair. Okay he was pretty good as Surinder but he hammed as Raj and he was so irritating as Raj that it seems like Harman Baweja was better than him in Love story 2050. No one can be given a best actor award for acting good for half the movie and hamming for the other half. And he is nowhere near Naseer’s role in Wednesday. So besides Hrithik, if anyone deserves an award it should be Naseeruddin Shah. You are an SRK fan so it would seem obvious that you want him to win the award but atleast first gauge his competition and then say that he deserves an award and if the love for him has clouded the reality then just ask any critic or jury of an award function that who deserves an award besides Hrithik.

And you say Aamir did nothing special in Ghajini then why do you think the movie did 200 crores of business. According to you, Shahrukh’s acting was much much better than Aamir’s and he has a bigger fan following then how come Rab ne was so much behind Ghajini in terms of boxoffice collections. Dont speak what your heart tells you to speak, try and speak some logic. And yes may be this time Aamir did a film which did not deserve an award but there are numerous times when Shah rukh won an award and Aamir did a better film. I dont care if Aamir wins or not, as long as his movies entertain me he will be my favorite actor.

  • Ronnie: Don’t missunderstand me.. yes I do admire Shahrukh but that doesn’t mean that I’d say that his acting was superb in every movie he did.. no.. I’m sure that you already read my previous comments on some other pages.. where I mentioned that Shahrukh’s acting was not that good in movies e.g. Don in a negative role, in some scenes in Chalte Chalte as well as the sad scene in Kabhi K. Kabhi Ghum.. no.. I’m not biased at all, but Shahrukh did a great job as Suri in Rabne as well as Billue Barber, where he gives a speach.. made me cry twice as I saw the movie twice.

About Aamir, if Ghajini did at the box office 200crores so it’s not because of his performance that was brilliant, it’s because of his name and fame now as a produder/director/actor and because the movie is an action one which pleases men more than women.. you know the population in india… and you’re aware that men could watch Ghajini 20 times but women would watch it 1-2 times only. In addition, the movie had lots of flaws which didn’t satisfy me as an audience.. if the only flaw in Rabne was Shahrukh’s look, that his wife couldn’t recognize him – although he was completely in a different look and character – and I don’t consider it as a flaw, but Aamir’s movie had 20 or more!
Shahrukh as Raj.. first let me ask you a question Ronnie: Did u understand the movie? Did u watch it more than one time? If you didn’t then do it please.. yes.. I do admit that in some scenes he was irritating.. I didn’t like too some scenes as he was overacting e.g. the scene where he showsup on the cinema screen, before the song: Hum hai Rahi pyaar..phir milenge.. chalte chalte.. but that would never affect the whole.. that’s because he was trying to be “cool” as a macho even in some other scenes.. he thought girls love men this way.. and that’s what his friend taught him to do.. that’s a part of the script..and that was “his role” and did as per the director’s instruction. We can’t say that his acting wasn’t good in these parts.. no because his role demanded what he did.. you can blame the director or the script writer but not shahrukh or consider his acting not upto the mark.

  • Fathiya: Now you tell me one thing. Do you really believe that an actor’s name and fame is enough for a movie to do this much amount of business as Ghajini did. If it by any means is true then aamir is biggest superstar bollywood have come across EVER. Because not even Amitabh at the peak of his power could get his bad movies to do a business as much as Ghajini did. And moreover he achieved this feat in the times of recession when every bad movie, whether it has Akshay in it(CC2C / 8X10 Tasveer) or any big star, is not able to even generate decent collection in the first week let alone 200 crores. You might think of audience too be fool but they are not. Audience is quite smart these days and they can very easily differentiate bad movies from good one. I will never accept your argument that movie was such a big hit only because of aamirs star power. There was something in the movie which clicked with the audience and this fact was quite evident from its box office collection.

About Ghajini’s flaws, well Ghajini was never meant to be a flawless film. You dont go into a theatre for Fast and Furious and expect to see Schindler’s List. You should be smart enough to understand that. Ghajini boldly flaunts its flaws and yet is proud of it. And I dont want to start with Rab ne’s flaws. I am tired of pointin them out in every different forum here.

Now you said that men could watch Ghajini 20 times but women could watch it 1-2 times only. Same could be said about Rabne where women could watch it 20 times while men cant even bear it once. Lets not generalize. My mom and my aunts went for Ghajini and they just loved the way Aamir portrayed the two roles.

Well you said that Shah rukh had to portray the character in this way. Well I dont understand why do I keep hearing the same old excuse every time Shah rukh hams. You must have watched OSO. Now you must have seen him overacting and trying to act all cool in the beginning of the second half. Well you can say that it was also the requirement of the role. You know many actors in many movies try and act cool like Aamir did in Andaz apna apna(if you have watched it). Just look at the difference. He did it in a sweet and innocent way rather than doing it in an irritating way as Shah rukh always does.

Its not like I dislike all Shah Rukh’s movies but I think besides Chak de and Swadesh I dont find any of his movies(since 2000) good enough to deserve what they have achieved.

And about watching Rabne again. I am sorry but I found the movie very uninteresting and not just because of Shahrukh but its story was also very bad (infact there was no story at all) and it is very lengthy so I will skip the idea of watching it again for now. If ever I watch it again it will be only because of Anoushka because I loved her portrayal of Taani ji.

Anyways our thinkin is miles apart so lets not argue any more whether Ghajini was better or Rabne was better. I think both may be good movies but there are better movies like Jodha Akbar, A wednesday, Aamir, etc which deserve to win the award more than these two movies.

  • Ronnie: Did u see Kamal Hasan’s movie (Ek Duje ke Liye). The movie was one of the best romantic love stories which bollywood did in 70’s.. and even if u watch it today, it’s still a beautiful movie.. Kamal’s acting was very good except in the song (Hum bane.. tum bane ek duje ki liye) he was irritating in this song.. his acting, dancing, and when I saw this scene for 1st time – before watching the whole movie – I just put off the t.v. and thought it’s a crap movie, but and as everyone used to say that it’s a nice movie, so one day I watched it in full and loved it, loved also Kamal’s acting and he became one of my favourite actors, specially after his role in the movie Saagar.

It’s alomst the same thing with Shahrukh in Rabne.. he’s was irritating in some scenes but when you see his performance throughout the movie.. you just love him.

Comparing the 3 actors in 2008, Hritihik, Shahrukh & Aamir and which one of them really deserves the award, it’s Hrithik and then Shahrukh, but Aamir.. no.. nothing special in his acting in Ghajini

I’m not a biased woman, if I was because I love shahrukh, then I’d hv never mentioned in my previous comments that I didn’t like some of his movies as well as his acting sometimes.. I didn’t like OSO for your information.

  • Ronnie: And, another point.. I said in my previous comment that Ghajini did 200crores because of Aamir Khan’s fame as a producer/director & actor, that’s one reason, and 2nd reason is that the movie was an “action” one.. all men love action movies and they were so eager to watch Ghajini.. there4 it did so well at the box office

  • Well said Ronnie. Two thumbs up!

Here’s some advice. Don’t argue with Fathiya. She pretends not to understand what you are saying because whatever you are saying is a fact, its true and it makes sense…but she either misses the point you are discussing or pretends she has NOT understood at all…

There is a saying “you can’t wake up a person who is pretending to be asleep”….

  • ABD: you can think whatever you want.. but I’m saying here what I think and what I believe in!

  • Please all of you read what Aamir Khan wrote on his latest blog – while he was at Disney land with his kids -“So here I was, a big superstar standing quietly inline, waiting for Mickey Mouse to give me an autograph for my children”!!

He used to say that Shahrukh calls himself as number 1, which he found it wrong ( although Shahrukh is not this type of person.. if he’d said it, he wasn’t serious, it was his humour as he always jokes during interviews) but Aamir is talking about himself on his blog, mentioning to everyone that he is ( a big superstar) !!

  • Fathiya: Its funny to read your screwed up logic. I think up to an extent ABD is correct. It seems like I am banging my head against a wall.

One of the funniest comments you made in your previous posts was saying you are not biased .. LOL .. What can I say. You want an award for SRK for overacting in half the movie over many great actors like Hrithik, Naseer, Amitabh Bachchan who gave us such superb movies in Jodha Akbar, A wednesday and Sarkar Raj and you say you are not biased. LOL. And the major point which proves that you are not biased is that you dont like OSO. Hahaha. What can I say against this kind of logic.

Okay so Ghajini was hit because:
    1. Aamir is the biggest superstar which India ever had and his movie is bound to make 200 crores provided the second condition fulfills
    2. It should be an action movie. It doesnt matter what kind of story it has, the acting doesnt matter, the screenplay doesnt matter, if Aamir can beat five people, the audience is foolish enough to watch it.
This is Miss/Mrs Fathiya’s another scrwed up logic.

And why the hell are you digging up small incidents of Aamir. What the hell is your point. If you want to prove Shahrukh to be a good actor, Dont try and think that by proving Aamir a worse actor and a bad person, SRK would become a better actor. Aamir is 1000 times better than SRK in terms of acting. He is in a completely different league. SRK doesnt belong in it. When SRK does an OSO there is nothing, while when Aamir does a Ghajini there is a huge hue and cry. You know why, because we expect quality films from Aamir. We want RDB, Lagaan type of films from him where he can showcase his perfectionism. We dont want some average movie like Ghajini from him. No one has such high standards from SRK. So stop showing Aamir in bad light and try and concentrate on your favorite actor.

  • Ohhee dear Ronnie: it’s up to you whatever you think.. and I’ve the right to post here whatever I think.. do u think if I say honestly my opinion about Aamir Khan then I’d harm his reputation?!! Do u want the truth? I always liked Aamir Khan’s acting, but never admired him personally.. I was never one of his fans, but loved his acting and some of his movies and always respected him.. but his image has changed in my eyes when I read, a few years ago, that he had an affair with a western woman ( some magazines also published her picture as well as his illegal son’s picture.. who looks like him!).. so.. here we’re.. he’s not what I thought.. a man with no flings, a main with no sins.. ( and this was during his marriage.. not before!).

People make mistakes.. fine.. we agree, we forgive, but we’ve take the responsibility of our mistakes, when we leave a trace behind.. and the trace is a son or a daughter who’ll live in this world with no father, with no name, with a shame, living as an orphan and the dad is alive somewhere!)

So I can’t forgive a father who did the worst than a sin, did the worst than sleeping with a woman, one night stand and made her “pregnant” and then later.. never admitted that this little boy who came in this life was his son, his blood!!

He’s a hero.. he’s an actor.. he’s an ideal.. he’s a dream of thousands of girls in this world, we see him always in nice images on the screen, but unfortunately the actor is just a (fake).. could never be a hero in his real life !

Therefore I lost my respect for someone called (Aamir Khan).

  • Here she goes again…What has any actor’s personal life got to do with their acting ability or their profession? If I have to mention about what Zoom TV had just reported about SRK recently, it will make Fathiya’s ears burn!!

You can’t argue against Ronnie’s comment. It would be better to concede defeat rather than to go off the point into irrelevant matters.

  • now now children….stop fighting.

  • Fathiya: I am not able to understand what is that got to do with the topic. How is Aamir’s personal involved in IIFA award’s nomination. What they do in their personal life is there business, why should I care. Aamir may have 100s of sons and daughters all over the world, I dont care. Its his life. And why do you care if Aamir has a son. Please leave these kind of irrelevant details out of this topic.

ABD: LOL.. well said. Exactly my point. But I guess she is too dumb to understand that. She is totally biased towards Shahrukh and comments “I’m not a biased woman” .. Lol. Well I think you are correct here. I should have followed the saying

“you can’t wake up a person who is pretending to be asleep” :D

So tell me who do you think according to you should win the Best actor award ?

  • Ronnie: Are u trying yourself to be a dumbo” here?!!!ofcourse what I mentioned about him is nothing to do with IIFA!! did I mention anything of this in my last comment?!!

It’s just to make u understand why I’ve no respect for him.. that’s alll dear Ronnie!

You mentioned in yr previous comments that something clicked with the audience.. while watching Ghaajini there4 they loved it.. I’m sure that if this movie wasn’t Aamir’s..let’s say that the movie was done with the same quality, direction & production but the hero was Harman Baweja..hahahaha it would’ve been a disaster now with those stupid flaws!!! I’m so confident of what I’m saying.. the movie was just a blockbuster because of Aamir Khan’s name & fame and the stupid action only.. ( exactly like Rajnikanth.. some idiots consider him a God now!!) now tell me.. do u think if Ghajini was released 10 years ago.. when Aamir wasn’t so popular worldwide it’d hv done 200crores at the box office?!! who cared about Aamir just 8 years ago..before the release of Lagaan?!!!! he did his first great movie with Raja Hindustani… yes.. he’s a brilliant actor, as I mentioned already, I love his acting but the only point of our discussion here is that Ghajini was a great success at the box office, but nothing was so special in his acting in this movie ( do u think he’s to win the award for the scene when he gets violent and jumps over the criminal’s body like a monkey and rores like a lion?!!) if ABD & you think that both Aamir & Shahrukh shouldn’t win the award.. then it has to go to Hrithik.. he’s the only one who deserves it.

For me.. Aamir’s acting was great in Dil Chata Hai, Mangal Pandey & Lagaan.. and if he was already nominated as the best actor in those years and for these 3 movies..he really deserved them, I’d hv definitely agreed, but not in Ghajini.. that’s my opinion.. sorry colleagues.. I didn’t find his acting that great in Ghajini.

  • Ronnie, it will be unfair if Hrithik doesn’t win the award. I have revisited Ghajni, JA, Fashion, Dostana, Rabne,Rock on, Aamir and Wednesday. Hrithiks acting is undoubtedly the most powerful and the one in which the most effort is evident. It was a difficult role and a central role as well. Other roles were dependant on the plot whereas in JA the plot was dependant on the person playing Akbar. The fact that Hrithik carried it off so well is just awesome. He should definately win the award!

  • Hey guys just admit it that SRK is the best out of all the others. Aamir actually cant act neither dance…how is he the most favorite? SRK just rocks and he is more popular and loved by the audience! I really didnt like Aamir Khans acting in Ghajini (no offence) all the hard work he did just has gone!! I absoulutely think that aamir needs to take his acting classes again! haha!! lol! SRK U ROCK!!
