Deepika Padukone criticised for ‘Women Empowerment’ short film

Vogue’s latest ‘Women Empowerment’ short film titled ‘My Choice’, a collaboration between director Homi Adajani and actress Deepika Padukone, has gone viral on the internet garnering 2.2 million views on Youtube. However, the short film has also been criticised on social media for trying to cash in on the latest trending topic called ‘Indian feminism’.

Some excerpts from the video:

My body, my mind, my choice

To wear the clothes I like; even if my spirit roams naked

My choice; to be a size 0 or a size 15

They don’t have a size for my spirit, and never will

To use cotton and silk to trap my soul is to believe that you can halt the expansion of the universe

Or capture sunlight in the palm of your hand

Your mind is caged, let it free

[advert]

My body is not

Let it be

My choice

To marry, or not to marry

To have sex before marriage, to have sex out of marriage, or to not have sex

My choice

To love temporarily, or to lust forever

My choice

To love a man, or a woman, or both

Remember; you are my choice, I’m not your privilege

The bindi on my forehead, the ring on my finger, adding your surname to mine, they’re all ornaments and can be replaced

My love for you cannot, so treasure that

My choice; to come home when I want

Don’t be upset if I come home at 4am

Don’t be fooled if I come home at 6pm,

My choice; to have your baby or not

To pick you from 7 billion choices or not

So don’t get cocky

My pleasure might be your pain

My songs, your noise

My order, your anarchy

Your sins, my virtues

My choices are like my fingerprints

They make me unique

I am the tree of the forest

I am the snowflake not the snowfall

You are the snowflake

Wake up

Get out of the shit storm

I choose to empathise

Or to be indifferent

I choose to be different

I am the universe

Infinite in every direction

This is my choice..

The short film has found its share of supporters, but social media websites like Twitter and Facebook have criticised Deepika. Check out a few reactions:

Rajesh Thakkar: Sex outside marriage??? This girl Deepika Padukone seriously needs some education. Dear Deepika, roaming around naked & having sex outside marriage is Neither empowerment Nor freedom. You seriously need to grow up now.

Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj: If it is your choice to have sex OUTSIDE marriage, it should be his choice too. Don’t then call him a womaniser or get offended if he calls you a …. because what opinion he has of you is his choice! If he wants to marry a fair, beautiful girl don’t call him sexist… because it is his choice to choose the partner he wants. It is his choice too to love a man or a woman or just himself or none inside or outside of marriage. Don’t ridicule him calling him impotent, gay and get him arrested because who he loves whether inside or outside marriage is his choice. It is his choice whether he wants to live with his parents or not. Don’t force him for what you want because it’s his choice and YOU made a choice to come to his home. Don’t treat him as a robot that should operate so that your choices are taken care of. HE IS A HUMAN BEING and he too has ALL THE RIGHTS to HIS CHOICE! Also – do not file rape case on promise of marriage after having consensual sex because he made a CHOICE not to MARRY YOU. Ms Deepika Padukone and girls who agree with this video – make your choice but stand up to how society perceives your choices as – because how they look at it is entirely their CHOICE.

Amrita Mukherjee: Okay so as usual everybody is going gaga over the new video ‘starring’ Deepika Padukone, and as usual I am here to dissect it. Apparently all of you are highly appreciative of the message. Whose message again? Vogue’s message. Not Deepika’s but Vogue’s. What exactly does the Vogue magazine do? Why was it marketed. Well, if you must know, since its inception, the magazine targeted the new New York aristocracy, establishing social norms in a country that did not value class and ceremony as much as England or France. See the primary problem I have with the primary party involved with the commercial, which you mistook as a ‘message’? Vogue India now wants to ’empower’ women. And how? By this? Seriously, you want me to believe you did not get their marketing strategy? You want me to believe that you had no damn idea that they want to sell their product to an audience going high on ‘indian feminism’ at the moment? Oh, hold on…I forgot. You just see what they want you to see.

Next, let’s come to the messenger involved. Deepika Padukone.

It’s my choice how I live my life – that seems to the entire point of this video in the first glance. If it was solely so, I wouldn’t have had a problem with it but it is not so.

It states along with the above, that I am robbing you of a chance to criticize, no matter what I do.
Take note of a few things she states,

1. “to have sex outside marriage, my choice” – would you look at your male partner the same way and wouldn’t criticize if he did that either? Your partner HAS the right to criticize your sexual activities outside the relationship, if you are involved in a monogamous relationship.

2. “To be a size 0 or a size 15” – no, no one has the right to bodyshame you if you don’t stick to the social standards of beauty. But you are a hypocrite, who, on one hand shoots a video against body shaming and on the other gets paid to promote a cereal product (Kellog’s Special K), which apparently helps you lose weight ‘for the wedding season’ so that you don’t lose your confidence instead. And what about your Garnier fairness cream advert. Yes, you promoted the fact that you consider lighter skin tone better than darker. And remember, it’s a person’s choice whether the person will sleep with another overweight person or not. Taking a look at the people you have dated, I would say, you too stick to the ‘hunk’ standard in men.

3. “You are my choice, I’m not your privilege” – That is totally vice versa. Don’t you go about jabbing as if it’s an one way traffic.

4. “to have your baby or not” – Fuck with you! That is a couple’s choice. Just like you have the ovary and the egg, the man has the sperm. It’s a decision that is taken between two sane adults, both of whom will share the love and responsibility involved. But then, I guess your brand of feminism doesn’t have much sanity left.
Lastly let’s take a look at your choices, or let’s call it your fingerprints in your own words. You were a talented badminton player but you joined the most female objectifying profession in the universe. You joined Bollywood to get paid because you have a cleavage! YOU DON’T TEACH PEOPLE ABOUT PATRIARCHY. YOU ARE A PART OF IT! Keep your mouth shut and keep on raking the moolah as long as drooling males pay to watch your size 0.

Waiting for sultan opps sultana dakku.

  • What a shameful video. So now Deepika and feminists are justifying Adultery and Cheating outside marriage! Adultery is a crime as per Indian Penal code section 497.

  • Its a couple’s choice whether to have a baby or not. Women can’t take the decision themselves! Whoever wrote the lines in the video must be slapped.

  • Bollywood is really strong united family when they do aib all bw support them when common people joke (ya just joke) on anushka virat then they all are very sentimental ( really) and now this deepika ya it has some good points but mostly its ridiculous.

  • Have s*x anywhere, at anytime with anyone you want. Its your choice though horrible ones. But don’t create an outrage when someone call you a s**t. Its his choice, though a horrible one.

  • Was never a fan of her acting or work but her recent actions and hypocrisy has left alot to be desired.
Shes at a crossroads in her career I feel now. She needs to in all honesty back away n let her work do the talking for her or else she will just give her detractors more ammunition to gun her down in public. Sometimes by saying nothing you say alot- remain dignified n let your haters burn themselves out.

  • I also don’t agree that a woman can be any size she wants and not be criticised. Man or woman, if you’re fat/overweight you need to do something about it. It isn’t ok to be fat.

  • loved the last two tweets..these women though i dont now any of them must be something in their respective fields.
their tweets covinced me instantly whatever dp said was immoral n bullshit
she should go bash toi for the cleavage showing which she exposed intentionally n participate in AIB along with his not so vulgar bf ranveer singh

  • then what is the use of Indian culture of what we Indians are being proud of it?

what is the use of saath phere with agni and all that oath which u take?

may be we Indians have modernize a lot but seriously we are following the foot steps of western peope.

This video haven’t shown the path to women but instead it has mislead them at some point.
may this video has some good points but most of them are childish.
when it comes to my choice then let men also masturbate by seeing at u half naked at streets, let them do rapes its their choice and if u can stop it, it will be urs choice.
let me kick ur asss if u are having sex outside the marriage its my choice.
see there are lots of controversial points.#male empowerment #
    @VOGUE INDIA.

  • fuck u vogue India and deepika with entire team.
u guys have really made this nation filthier by this video.
following footsteps of western people I mean where is our culture only in books.
this video must be taken out from YouTube.
then we men will have our own choices.
to make u pregnant and leave u.
to make u mother and leave u with ur child.(as said by abv line to have baby or not) but actually it should be mutually.
to have sex whoever we want.
the points will go on…….stop acting childish. I hate deepika from now.

  • First of all,What a comment by @amrita mukherjee!!!kudos to u.However, this video neither promote women empowerment nor women freedom. This is too over the top. This sounds like a woman version of Hitler.I mean there is a difference between waywardness or lewdness and freedom.

  • Okay @Deepika,marry ranveer singh and have extra marital sex with ranbir kapoor and announce that in public.

  • Deepika Padukone , what are u doing? You are a face everyone knows so be careful before doing such things as you know that these things are not going to produce any positive result on our society. Ok i agree that some points are good and they are necessary for a girl or better say human being but there are certain points which just doesn’t make any sense. I seriously don’t understand how a sensible girl like u did this?

  • what has “loving temporarily” or “lusting forever” to do with women empowerment. Are u justifying #adultery# by weaponizing it as women empowerment.plz do not make mistake ‘(complete individualism/anarchism) as women empowerment.

When u talk abt women empowerment, talk abt education, caste differences, dowry, child marriage, flesh trading etc. there are plenty more and lot more issues then one wearing clothes or not, bindi or not, having sex or not…

  • I really like her but she’s crossing every limit of hypocrisy now a days!!
Come on DP,why are so much into all these..Act in films,TV commercials and chill..
What do these kinda videos do instead of trending on social media??
I don’t think even 0.001% of women will take it seriously!!

  • What bullshit comments…she is openly promoting adultery..i wish all her films flops badly and hopefully she would be out of the industry soon!

  • Why this video has been made? ?
    For Women Empowerment? ? Seriously?

You just cann’t make a woman stronger with Hypocrisy.

If you don’t want to get married , then don’t do. Nobody will force you.

It’s your choice to Have baby or to not have a baby?? Seriously? Come on, it’s a mutual decision of a couple.

To have outside marriage? Okay, If this can be a choice of Woman, it should be the same for a man too.

And please don’t call a man , a woman’ s choice. It can be the reverse too. If your BF or hubby dumbs you, then don’t create a mountain over it.

To have a size Zero or size 15? Okay, I admit that a person(both man and woman) shouldn’t be criticized for his or her size. But, it’s a human normal tendency to prefer attractive indivisual. And ofcourse, it’s everyone’s choice. Not woman’s choice only.

The thing is that we are trying to creat unnecessary things about this so called Womem empowerment. No doubts, women should be respected, But definitely not by hypocrisy.

Having said that, there are a few good points in the video too. Becoz our society mostly points women when they do something . Like if a man is having sex with several women, he will not be as criticized as a woman with multiple male partner.

But over all, this video is disbalanced. If a woman can have a choice independent of his male partner’s desire , the reverse case should be applied too.

  • @ vogue and deepika, i thought that it was meant to be video for women empowerment, but alas it turned out to be about flesh and sex, if you think that the points featured will empower women then GOD save India and also world, do you have any iota of knowledge what empowerment means, by doing this video you are damaging the social fabric and seriously undermining TRUST which is fulcrum in every relationship. You are only objectifying women by this video and that is the root cause for the increase in crime against women in recent years

  • well i must say that some of the criticism, actually most of it makes a lot of sense…..

celebrities get carried away at time to project a certain image….

remember people are very smart and intelligent and with social media they have a platform to express themselves!!!

  • Oh wait I forgot piku is coming next month jab kuch outrageous karega tabhi toh film news me rahenga!! But she should take tuition from rakhi sawant for such publicity at least it would be entertaining. Women empowerment ke naam pe kuch bhi!!

  • Dear Deepika, Are you Hindu or what? Where do you live India or America? Did you respect your parents? Above statement good for you but not good for Indian woman. Have you learn Indian cultural? I live in south east Asia but my families all follow Indian culture and respect Indian culture. Ek bar Agni ko sakshi maan kar shaadi kar lete hai toh dussaro aurat ko buri nazaar se nahi dekte hai ji hum log. India meh rah kar western culture ko follow karte ho, kya baat hai kya baat hai. I’m proud be south east Asia.

Please note, i’m old commentator my first name is Akon belly dancer but now change Akon – who dat girl.

  • That doesn’t mean she is supporting sex with out marriage.she is saying in the way women can do whatever they want if any critical situation comes in front of their way jjus like a GUY do whatever they want at any situation in their life.a guy never gives proof his virginity and in this society someone even doesn’t even need that from a guy.when it comes to girl, all boys want virgin girl.isn’t that a height of difference.we’re talking about ‘women empowerment’.when a shit news corporation like TOI is talking about some actresse’s cleabage show at the same time they are trying to show themselves how they are taking care of so called women empowerment.should She really care about those wicked media that targeted Her once with out doing anything.Strongest girl DP,I’m supporting you.

Some uneducated persons are talking about section 497,but he forgot his favourite salman said he is virgin at the age of 50 ,while saying that someone should check his expressions how he said in such a way that he hot trapped by someone non other than KJO in KWK show.now that clearly showed what he is ,now as he is a guy whatever he did affair / having sex with someone many times.did their fans really taking care about?because he is a guy and a star, that’s why?come on Indians support that GIRL who said such things that no other can dare to say in India in a different way to perceive empowerment of women”.this is just a other way to make you feel the freedom of womens that even can cross the limit Od having sex after marriage that she / whoever vogue is really not meant to intending for that.

  • Deepika u still have time to ‘re-visit d deepika everyone admired. I hate split personality…u bashed TOI n now if TOi comes out wit an article 2mrw about this topic or AIB n u decide to bash them or talk of women freedom. Am d last to support u n 1st 2castigate u. Learn from Sonakshi kajal agarwal…Let India b known as India! No one is against kiss scenes or western clothes in moviesthese days cos we know d world today moves with time b trends as long as u preserve dat typical “Indian historical women heritage”
