Dangal Friday (Day 1) Box Office Collection Update

Update: Dangal has collected Rs 29.78 crore on Day 1 at the box office.

Aamir Khan’s Dangal has taken the second best opening of 2016, only behind Salman Khan’s Sultan which took a earth-shattering opening during Eid this year.

It’s not a pan-India opening, as the occupancy for the morning shows on Friday ranges from average (below MS Dhoni: The Untold Story at some centres) to matching Sultan at some others. Business at most theatres is somewhere in between, with ticket priced higher than Sultan.

It seems to be a case of the film taking a bigger opening at bigger centres and the reason for this could be the overwhelmingly positive reviews and pre-release reports. It could also be because of the impact of demonetisation at smaller towns and cities.

At smaller centres, the opening is not upto ‘festive release’ expectations, but given the fact that the film does not look like an out-and-out commercial release (much like Chak De India back in 2007), the opening can be termed as very good to excellent.

The level of opening in the morning suggests that the film is heading towards a 26-28 crore opening day total, which could vary by more than 10% if the film manages to show growth at smaller centres evening onwards.

The reports coming in from theatres is good, so the film could show big growth in business on Saturday and peak on Sunday when the family audience come out in big numbers.

Sultan collected Rs 36.54 crore on its opening day, which was a partial holiday for Eid. Dhoom 3 remains the biggest non-holiday opener of all-time, as the film – including collections from all versions – managed to record 36.22 crore on Day 1. Unless there is a massive turnaround in the evening and night, both of these records will remain safe.

The highest single-day collections of 2016 is Sultan’s 38.21 crore. If Dangal can get closer to the 30 crore mark by the end of today and the film manages to find universal acceptance, it could breach the 40 crore mark on Sunday.

Dangal has no competition at the box office for the next 3 weeks. The next major release is ‘Ok Jaanu’ but as far as the non-metro centres are concerned, it has about 5 weeks before the release of Raees and Kaabil. For now, it’s about finding acceptance and getting those repeat-viewers, both of which is crucial if Dangal has to become the fourth film to cross the 300 crore mark – more so since the film will be missing out on two extra holidays for Christmas and New Year, both of which, unfortunately, happen to fall on Sunday this year.

  • Bhai agar superstar ha to holiday ka MATLAB Kya ha 340 Cr pk ka record todana he Hoga warna gunta superstar holiday ka fyada uttakar bolte ha superstar amair Khan aur superstar ha to non Holiday movie release karo phir kama ke dekaho 300 Cr 350cr tub manege superstar lekkin nehay pata Bina holiday 200 Cr Bhi Bhi Hoga isleya late ha holiday par aur khate ha superstar

  • Every fan base watch such wonderful film . My big brother is big fan Aamir khan my second brother fan of Srk he will definetly watch Dangal .

  • Dangal will do exceptional business in the first 3 days . The difference between Sultan and Dangal would be the romantic angle . Although I have not seen Dangal this can be easily understood as Dangal is based on the father daughter relationship . The first target of Dangal would be to beat D3 and Sultan if this happens then we can see Dangal beating BB and PK . Aamir has given 4 All Time Grossers so everybody expects him to do this for the 5th time . Honestly I am not thinking that far but Dangal’s success is important as 2016 has been a bad year in terms of Box Office as well as Content . 3 Open weeks is a lot of time to break all records but de monetisation can also play a huge role especially in single screens . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    @dear admin:
HNY collected 45cr nett 2.3 years ago with 20% lower ticket price & 15% lesser screens compared to Dangal. Therefore Dangal should collect over 60cr nett (yes you read it correctly) on Sunday with around 80% occupancy (equal to HNY opening day occupancy).

  • Indicine you should also mention that 6th July was Pre EID day, which neutralize the Partial Holiday factor (Because Muslims won’t watch movie in Pre EID day)…….So we can say that Sultan was a non holiday release…..

  • the difference b/w aamir and hritik is that
both. actor do a film in gap of 2 years but aamir come with classic and hritik come with crap
    bang bang 2014
    mohenjodaro 2016

hritik need to learn from aamir how to use time and choose film

  • if it touch 30cr mark then it is best. as dangal is not commercialy looking film, with no heroine, masala genre, item songs etc, no other known name other then ak,full working day, and biggest hurdle is demonitise effect on single screens of interiors or suburbs. it has excellent occupancy in plexes but avg in SS. after all this factors if 30+ is opening then its not less then a festive release. it is phenomenal.

  • why are the ticket prices so high?
It’s higher than Sultan in Bangalore plexes.

Dangal may collect more but I don’t think the footfall will match any Salman movie.

  • Dilwale with clash 22cr where Dangal solo 26cr but Dangal cross 300cr something going wrong with SRK hope raees do 180-200cr then The Ring break all records
