Can The Jungle Book cross the 200 crore mark in India?

The Jungle Book is on a record-shattering run, which is now comparable to one of Bollywood’s best trending films like 3 Idiots. The first week business of 3 Idiots was a little higher at Rs 79.5 crore (including paid preview collections of 2.5 crore), while The Jungle Book collected Rs 74.08 crore.

In the second week too, the difference was about the same with 3 Idiots leading by around 5-10%. But while 3 Idiots had the advantage of New Year and other holidays, The Jungle Book was competing against a big film like FAN – which it eventually managed to destroy.

In the third week, things seem to have gotten a lot more closer. In 5 days, The Jungle Book has collected Rs 24.95 crore, while 3 Idiots had collected Rs 25.25 crore (5 days – Week 3). The difference is almost non-existent which shows that ‘The Jungle Book’, in its third week, is now beginning to show better trends than 3 Idiots!

This is a massive achievement in itself because no film in the last 5-6 years has managed to match the trends of the 2009 film 3 Idiots. Yes, there have been bigger grossers, but the level of weekly drops of ‘The Jungle Book’ is outstanding.

The occupancy and collections of the Hollywood film is now about 4 times more than FAN, and we are talking about a film featuring one of the biggest crowd-pullers in the industry, running in just its 2nd week.

‘The Jungle Book’ is expected to remain unaffected this week too, as Baaghi is a massy film that may not generate big numbers at multiplexes. FAN will be out of most theatres this weekend, which will mean ‘The Jungle Book’ will retain most of its shows this week too.

Rs 200 crore will be difficult, but if the weekend growth this week is big and it can post numbers of around 6 – 6.5 crore this Sunday, ‘The Jungle Book’ might get pretty close to joining the 200 crore club! How big would that be?

  • Tough…but its still generating very good revenue during weekdays and superb revenue at the weekends….so can’t rule the 200 cr out….

  • To be frank no unless baaghi is rejected like fan in the multiplexes

But Hollywood dominating in India this trend is ominous for Bollywood

Hollywood has started eating up Bollywood’s business in India

It’s a matter to be concerned

  • No i don’t think so but i m just imagining now that wat Mohenjodar & even shivaay can do now. This ‘visual spectacle meets Indian culture’ genre has taken the nation by storm as evident from the extraordinary performance of baahubali Bajirao & now Jungle Book.

  • This justifies many things
Hollywood movies can now take over from bollywood
U dont need a festive release to make 200cr maybe for 300 cr u need
No superatar is bigger than film , a good film itself is biggest superstar

    And for srk
Yes his career is witnessing an all tym low
Its better he give atleast a 250 cr grosser in an year , otherwise it will become very tough for him to return

  • Lol seriously how can you compare a 2016 movie with 2009 movie…
if you compare the prices for both than jungle book ticket prices are40-50% higher from 3 idiots ticket price…

    • @devesh, doesn’t matter. We are comparing a Hollywood film to one of Bollywood’s biggest hits. Until 2013-2014, no Hindi film came close to 3 Idiots. And most, even today, will struggle to get to 200.

  • Anyways it’s an exception case. No Hollywood film has the potential to score so much from hindi version which may even touch 100cr..!!

The hindi cartoon of jungle book was hugely popular in 2000s and are still fresh in ppls mind. Many like me have only watched d Hindi version and rest after watching the English version have watched d Hindi version that has resulted in extraordinary trending..

Anyways situation of Hollywood in India apart from one-two releases continues to be poor. The new release this week-Huntsman is a washout. Let’s see how far civil war can go. Target will b beating previous avengers collection

  • It might just fall short of 200 cr. but will be a great achievement for the movie nonetheless.
    More power to Mowgli.
    #Kaali

  • In 2013
CE released 1 week before OUTIMD, and CE thrashed OUTIMD.

    In 2016
Jungle Book released 1 week before FAN, and Jungle Book thrashed FAN.

  • @himanshu @stark there is no eating up or Hollywood overtaking Bollywood happening and it will never happen unless v make craps left right & centre

  • Who is the best newcomer?

Ranbir, Sid, Varun, Ranveer, Arjun, Ayushmaan?

    Mine are Aamir & Salman.
    Both doing well since 2008-2009.

Before that even Sikander Kher and Jaxjie Bhagnani’s movies used collect more than Sallu and Aamir.

And there fans compare them with SRK who never had a a single bad phase in his entire career.

SRK is an emotion(even if you are a hater), you can’t take him out of your heart. He resides in each one of us.

  • The Jungle Book is on a dream run at the Box Office and if it is compared with Fan than it is a massive achievement . 3 Idiots released in 2009 Christmas had Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, brilliant content, 3 open weeks and Rajkumar Hirani . The Jungle Book released on Non Holiday, No star value, Huge competition from Fan in 2nd week, no popular franchise and no songs but still it is really close to do 150 CR . I can’t deny TJB doing 200 CR because the way TJB is performing anything is possible . I don’t have any expectations from Baaghi so TJB can perform really well in the 4th week . A Hollywood movie doing 100 CR+ in India is considered a huge achievement but TJB is now a benchmark in terms of Box Office . If TJB does 200 CR than this will be the Biggest Box Office Achievement in India in this decade . !!!!!!!!!!

  • While congratulating respecting and being in awe of couple of holly films scoring big in india is absolutely fine but passing some stupid sesnseless comments about Bollywood using these films BO performance is really disappointing. Grow up guys
ps- this comment was not directed at everyone but only 4 a few like @stark

  • While there is no threat from Hollywood but performance of jungle book ff7 JW should b an eye opener for local filmmakers and most importantly inspire them to make more adventure/vfx loaded film. I now feel that even tiger shroff’s A FLYING JATT can score huge if it made well and Shivaay Mohenjodaro can surely do 200-300 lifetime

Hollywood’s rise in past 12 months is a blessing in disguise for Bollywood. For 100 years Bollywood never faced any competition from other industries but now this 2-3 holly films will force Bollywood to raise their game

    This is BRILLIANT

  • @arjun youngistan fan

From last few years Hollywood movies are giving Indian movies (Bollywood and other regional movies) a run for their money, I agree most of the Hollywood flicks are complete washouts but the bigger films are doing huge business in India which didn’t usually happen (barring a few in the past ) so the future of Bollywood after the departure of today’s superstars is not looking good at all

  • Unless Baaghi is completely rejected but i think it will fall short of 200cr.
Looking at the hollywood lineup of films i think 200cr maybe crossed likes the likes of Civil War,Suicide Squad,Legend Of Tarzan and maybe Warcraft.

  • Raees should be released on the same day which they fixed. We srkian will show the real aukaat of Salman khan.
We want raees bhai vs sultana aapa. If not then at least Raees bhai vs Tingu bhai. Should be clash with sultana or dangali.
    # Miyabhai.

  • @devesh Tead between the lines. They are not actually comparing the total collections, rather the trend of the respective movies. Major difference there.

  • I completely disagree with u bro @himanshu
Bajirao defeated dilwale by 40cr margin & without clash would have touched 200cr mark
Twmr scored more than any akki ajay varun & last 2 srk films

Abcd2 scored more than akki ajay releases last year

Actually it’s the non supestar films that hv kept the industry going and face just 6% drop from 2014 despite underperformance of all superstars except salman

Even this year 3 of the 4 hits don’t have any big stars

So once all the superstars return to form which i am sure will happen this year and akki is already back at his best then with the already strong performing low& medium budget films Bollywood business will again reach it’s peak

I m 200% sure that this year will beat 2013(biggest year ever till date) by 350cr+ margin and hence despite a jungle book civil war Hollywood contribution will drop from 15% to 10%
