Welcome Back Review

Anees Bazmee is a hit director who has hardly ever gone wrong when it comes making films he is comfortable with – comedy movies. With Welcome Back, he has got most of the cast back for the film but almost a decade has passed since the original release. Does the sequel carry forward the same sense of magic from Welcome? Does Welcome Back manage to make us all laugh, just like the first film did when it released and eventually on the idiot box? Will Akshay Kumar’s presence be missed? Let’s find out.

Story: Uday Bhai and Majnu Bhai (Nana and Anil) are still settled in Dubai but they fall in love with a con-woman called Rajkumari whose mother is a supposed Maharani (Dimple Kapadia). Problem arises when they are entrusted with the task of getting their sister Ranjana (Shruti) married before they can get married to Chandni. Ranjana is in love with Ajju Bhai (John) who is also the step son of Dr. Ghungroo (Paresh Rawal). When Uday and Majnu come to know that Ajju is a bhai, they contact Wanted bhai (Naseeruddin Shah) to get rid of Ajju Bhai.

Welcome Back Review: You don’t expect a high quality film when going to watch films like Welcome Back. A lot of the situations and twists that we see in Welcome Back can be sorted out with simple phone calls but that will make it a logical realistic movie. Anees Bazmee sticks to what he knows best. He peppers the movie with slapstick situations and dialogues and what arises out of it is a hilarious movie that is good in its own regard but doesn’t match the hilarity of the first part. Thankfully, there’s not a single dull moment in the film and the characters are funny enough to make it an entertaining watch.

Welcome Back Movie Review

Welcome Back Movie Review

Welcome Back has been shot on a lavish scale and the technicalities of the movie are sorted. The art direction is great, the costume design is stylish and suits the nature of the movie. The editing could have been tighter. The music of Welcome Back is nothing extraordinary as the only songs which make any sort of a mark are Tutti Bole Wedding Di and the title song. It could have done well with a hit song or two.

Acting: Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor make a great team and their chemistry is what keeps Welcome Back afloat for so long. They seem to be enjoying themselves and go all out in their respective roles. Paresh Rawal is rather irritating in his role. John Abraham doesn’t ham as much as he might have been expected to and Shruti Hassaan is an adequate choice in her role. Naseeruddin Shah hams it up without ever going overboard. Dimple Kapadia also does a fine job. The other actors are all funny and keep the same tone from the original.

Conclusion: Welcome Back is a must watch if you loved Welcome and if you enjoy slapstick humour with outrageous dialogues. The plot devices in Welcome Back all serve the single purpose of tickling your funny bone. If you prefer to use your brains while watching movies and prefer serious movies, then Welcome Back should not be mandatory viewing for you. If you want to let yourself loose, and just have a gala time at the movies then this is the best bet for you this weekend at the cinemas.

  • Box office India says it’s the biggest opening after BB in many states. Brothers helping factor was holiday. Which moron says this movie missed Joker? Without Joker the movie is rocking that’s just the reason. John looks far more distinguished than safet dhaariwalla aka bhudda joker. 15 -16 cro opening.

  • sorry friends i am suffering from
    ratingphobia from last two weeks
after watching All is well and
    phantom.
i will watch it sunday and my
review will be out the same day.

  • Watched it today and boy oh boy John Abraham should refrain from doing comic roles. He is not even 1/4th of Akshay Kumar

  • I wanna watch this movie next week. Waiting for it..
    Dear@Indicine,
why does this Hyderabadi Mechanic ‘SSS’ always write lengthy comments in broken English?
What does he try to explain? Or does he he think he can over-write a comment as he takes Complan more than it’s required???

  • @floppy abe bikhari no. 1 …..aagya beekh maang ke ….kaafi time baad aaya hai
…lgta hai beekh maang maang ke bangkok chla gya tha…tere jaison ko apne ghar pe naukar rkhta hai wo…aur agar wo beekh maange ga toh tere jaison ke liye competition badh nhi jaayega kya
    ..??

  • @Darth kSHITij 5:09pm

Ironic how you quote the phrase “leave your brains behind” coz everyone is wondering the same thing as to where have you left your brains ie apprentice (aNIPUNma Skywalker)…?

  • @Nerraj excellent analysis. From the analysis most of the akshay franchise are hit below average and average. Even suprise with hera pheri I thought it was super hit ? Sure? Secondly we know you don’t like ajay devgan but good to see verdicts like super hit hit blockbuster written
by you. How can you forget one of the biggest franchise too after Dhoom. Where is Singham and Singham returns? Singham 100 crores super hit/blockbuster depending on sites. While Singham returns with one of the highest occupancy in modern times along with dhoom and dabbang. SR 140 hit. Why ddnt you include it?

  • Producers also took the phrase ‘leave your brains behind’ seriously n by leaving out Joker Boy they made a very wise decision.

  • Yes I too cant fathom out how the hyderabadi mechanic Complan Boy is consistently allowed to waste cyber space by posting his irrelevant log book manual type rubbish filled comments not just in broken english but also broken thought too. To everyone its quite obvious that every sentence has three or four thoughts entangled in them. Reading sorry attempting to read or even staring at his crapgiri is harmful to ones health just like entrusting him to repair your automobile…!

For your safety 2 things are essentially vital- avoid looking at the idiots comment n secondly avoid any garage body shop in hyderabad that employs the death trap mechanic…!

  • The movie was all about anil Kapoor the legend
Mashallah he looks 15 Yeats younger than his age …. and always in form ..
Take him out the movie is nothing …
Anil Kapoor the best in this one ..
Akshay and Katrina cannot be in sequel according the storyline of this one

  • @neeraj. You don’t like @ajay rocks and ajay but why excluding one of the biggest franchise. Where is Singham franchise. What an expensive mistake to omit it. May be you really forgot. 11 blockbuster 14 super hit. Occupancy very high for 14 too.

  • @sss first let an actor like shahrukh who is a joke himself in the name of acting learn acting then only talk about others.

  • @vikram saini, then who acted in VZ,DARR,DDLK,CDI,SWADES,DEVDAS,MNIK,BAAZIGAR?????salman?????it’s your sallu fan mates who are talking about my names also too much obsessed in this article too.KING SRK is THE BIGGEST ACTOR with DILLIPJI for giving 14 BEST FILMFARE PERFORMANCE CAREER,which is just a dream for your untalented papa’s made non actor joker boy salman, still you don’t have any shame,oh sorry according to you sallu films bhai movies deserves Oscar ,why you’re making joke of your non actor?????,ROFL.
