Top Bollywood Actors Overseas – September 2014

The analysis of the top stars in the overseas markets is finally live. The market that Shahrukh Khan has dominated for more than a decade, finally has a worthy contender to challenge him for the top spot.

Post the worldwide success of 3 Idiots, Aamir Khan has not just been challenging SRK but consistently breaking his records. Currently, Aamir holds the records for two of the highest overseas grossers in history – Dhoom 3 ($30.75 million) and 3 Idiots ($25.9 million).

As things stand today, the battle between Aamir and Shahrukh is too close to call, but the latter takes the top spot. The two superstars have two big releases this year, Happy New Year and PK.

  • The list below would be based on the gross box office collections of an actor’s last five movies. To keep the comparison fair, all figures are in US dollars.
  • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration. Non-commercial and art films like ‘Dhobi Ghat’ have also not been considered.
  • Dated movies that released before 2007 have not been considered.
  • We have only included 8 actors in the list because the rest are not bankable stars overseas. The likes of Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, with a couple of solid overseas performers behind them, are emerging as stars to watch out for. Currently, it’s unfair to include them in the list.

Shahrukh Khan

Rank 1 Shahrukh Khan: An actor who has dominated the overseas markets for close to 20 years continues to be the top superstar internationally. However, the battle between him and Aamir is getting closer with every release. Will Shahrukh continue to reign supreme after Happy New Year? Only time will tell, but the superstar is going all out to promote his film with international tours. Come Diwali, Happy New Year would have to collect a minimum of $22.35 million if SRK has to retain the top spot.

  • Chennai Express – $18.8 million
  • Jab Tak Hai Jaan – $13.25 million
  • Don 2 – $11.25 million
  • Ra. One – $10.9 million
  • My Name Is Khan – $22.98 million
  • Total – $77.18 million (average $15.44 million per film)

Rank 2 Aamir Khan: Has established himself in the overseas markets after the release of 3 Idiots. He is the numero uno star in China, what with both Dhoom 3 and 3 Idiots doing very well. PK is one of the most awaited films overseas and has the potential to break the records set by Dhoom 3.

  • Dhoom 3 – $30.75 million (including first week collections from China)
  • Talaash – $8.95 million
  • 3 Idiots – $25.9 million
  • Ghajini – $7.75 million
  • Taare Zameen Par – $3.20 million
  • Total – $76.55 million (average $15.31 million per film)

Rank 3 Salman Khan: The biggest star in India is at number three overseas and lags way behind Aamir and Shahrukh. However, Salman is way ahead of all other actors. Most of his films belong to the action / masala genre, which could be one of the reasons why his films don’t perform as well in overseas territories. His latest release, Kick, was also his highest grosser ahead of Ek Tha Tiger.

  • Kick – $11.3 million
  • Jai Ho – $6.1 million
  • Dabangg 2 – $8.48 million
  • Ek Tha Tiger – $10.4 million
  • Bodyguard – $8.3 million
  • Total – $44.58 million (average $8.92 million per film)

Rank 4 Hrithik Roshan: The poor performance of Guzaarish and Kites has hurt him, but Hrithik movies have always performed consistently well in the overseas markets. Krrish 3 is his highest grosser followed by Dhoom 2, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghum and Jodhaa Akbar. Even if Bang Bang does very well, he has no chance of beating the top 3 Khans as his average is way too low at the moment.

  • Krrish 3 – $8.78 million
  • Agneepath – $6.1 million
  • Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara – $7.21 million
  • Guzaarish – $3.22 million
  • Kites – $4.51 million
  • Total – $29.82 million (average $5.96 million per film)

Rank 5 Ranbir Kapoor: Besharam under-performed big time, but Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was a massive success at the box office. Barfi and Rockstar too did well.

  • Besharam – $2.96 million
  • Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – $10.45 million
  • Barfi! – $5.86 million
  • Rockstar – $3.36 million
  • Anjaana Anjaani – $3.2 million
  • Total – $25.83 million (average $5.17 million per film)

Rank 6 Saif Ali Khan: Surprise, surprise! Saif Ali Khan with two solid performers in Race 2 and Cocktail is ahead of Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar in the overseas markets. Race 2 was a massive hit last year, Humshakals has under-performed.. but Saif seems to have quite a good following overseas. Love Aaj Kal did very well too collecting $6.4 million.

  • Humshakals - $2.65 million
  • Bullet Raja- $1 million
  • Race 2 - $6.4 million
  • Cocktail - $4.3 million
  • Agent Vinod - $1.4 million
  • Total – $15.75 million (average $3.15 million per film)

Rank 7 Ajay Devgn: Singham Returns has done well and so have most of his films directed by Rohit Shetty. Apart from those, Son of Sardaar was a decent hit. Devgn is ahead of Akshay Kumar by a small margin.

  • Singham Returns – 4.5 million (expected)
  • Satyagraha – $2.4 million
  • Himmatwala – $1.3 million
  • Son of Sardaar – $2.8 million
  • Bol Bachchan – $4.1 million
  • Total – $15.1 million (average $3.02 million per film)

Rank 8 Akshay Kumar: Singh Is Kinng (7.1 million), Housefull 2 ($6 million), Heyy Baby ($4.4 million) are several others were hugely successful films. Back in 2007 – 2008, Akshay movies used to fare better than Aamir, Salman and Hrithik’s. But his last few films have under-performed big time. His biggest hit in the last 2 years is Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty.

  • Entertainment – 2.75 million (expected)
  • Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty – $4.2 million
  • Boss – $2.75 million
  • Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara – $1.85 million
  • Special 26 – $2.75 million
  • Total – $14.25 million (average $2.85 million per film)

The battle is not quite as close or interesting as the domestic market. But Happy New Year vs PK is something to watch out for. It’ll also be interesting to see if Bang Bang can beat Kick and Ek Tha Tiger. If it does, it’ll be Hrithik’s highest grosser too. Ranbir and Salman have no release this year, Saif has Happy Ending while Ajay has Action Jackson. Akshay has an interesting line-up of upcoming films, he could even make it to the Top 5 as he has a fairly good following.

  • God knows how these NRIs tolerate such melodrama…!!!
Means how can someone watch Jab tak hai accident, kabhi tata na kehna etc…
Now of late after 3 idiots they have slightly began to alter their choices watching films like talaash, don 2 etc..

  • interestingly Aamir beat KANk than Mnik beat 3i in 2010.Than in 2011 before Ra1 released Aamir beat again srk by 3i, since than srk following Mnik as he is not able to beat even mnik forget 3i, and Aamir only commercial film d3 reached 30 million, agree it is Franchisr but if 3.7 billion actor means who has 2.5 billion fan overseas (considering all 1.22billion population of India is srk fans and we non fans of him living in Pluto) than its a huge achievement.Congrats Aamir and fans.SRK dominance is no longer there. but since 1995-2009 before 3i srk was at top.A huge achievement. Proud moment for srk fans.

  • @ankit yes he has 2.5 billion overseas fan but he still given top grosser there with 2 banners,Dharma and YRF,at least Aamir achieved that mark with vc banner which highest grosser overseas was Large Rahi Munnabhai and when Talaash released it grossed 9million when no one recognise who is Reema kagti but Yash ji directed grossed 13.5 which was a big bannrr ,a NRI based story.way behind mnik forget 3i.
    SRK- top grosser overseas
    1 ddlj-1995 yrf
    2. kkhh-1998 dharma
    3. K3g- 2001 dharma
    4. Vz-2004 yrf
    5.kank- 2006 dharma
    6. Mnik- 2010 dharma
so I don’t think srk fan should target others for big banners.
Even big b grossed 8 million with Black on 2005 when srk failed to collect even 6 million with paheli and Main hoon naa his home production.

  • @indicine team someone called babaji ka thullu is needlessly posting negativity about highly popular films like jthj and kabhi ha kabhi naa.he is the same kid who starts crying when someone criticises his fav stars with logical facts but when he speaks nonsense about others without even any logic he still expects others to admire him.plz tell him that a star like srk doesnt need any advice just like u hd told me that a star like akki doesn’t need my advice

  • That’s why srk fans are targeting Aamir these days.
Overseas me bhi nahi baksha. even Aamir didn’t thought that he will rule both markets till 2005 as he never given top film from quite a long time. But now he is topping worldwide list.Every actor dreams to be top on some day and Aamir clearly unstoppable since 2006.
    RDB- best film of 2006
    TZP- best film of 2007
    Ghajini-All time grosser ever 2008
3idiots-All time grosser both market and best film of decade 2009
    2010,2011-No film
Talaash-only disappointment with collection movie was good 2012
Dhoom 3-All time grosser again both market, though I loved the movie but many disliked too.
P.k.- 2014 Huge expectation let’s see what magic it will create.

  • babaji plz kill yourself what is your problem with srk… you are trying to make fun of yashji’s movie… stick to your doogy entertainment or whatever or whosever fan you are…

  • Salman Khan could not even beat the overseas collection of KANK which is relased 6 years ago …..what a shame….

  • Well to all the anti aamir comments..Aamir initially was never working under banners like YRF which distrubuted movies overseas successfully this is the reason his movie like Ghulam or sarfarosh were nt big overseas ( i doubt even if they released it overseas) now since UTV , FOX , Reliance AAMIR is now undisputed King of Box office in India and overseas as big production houses distribute his films overseas and we all know about his talent

  • Srk’s biggest or should i say fanciest period was between 1995-1998 after that Aamir is way up and ahead then him (2002-2004 excluding)

  • Why is Dhobi Ghat not included? Not fair indicine! Include dhobi ghat and you will see the difference between collection of movies of SRK and Aamir!!

  • @romance new year Its an official remake of Knight and Day and is very different and much better from the original unlike happy new year which is plagiarised from oceans series and players. you are a certified idiot and i have seen your bullshit on facebook so it would be better if you leave this website for good.

  • hahahaha why sallu fans are talking about aamir why????? sachin 11 is saying we are proud for aamir hahahaha why you didn’t mention sallu’s name you are sallu fan. but when you sallu is nowhere near srk you are talking about aamir .poor sallu fans

  • Upcoming movies of akshay
    1.shaukee(cameo.
    2.Gabbar
    3.Baby
    4.singh is bling
    5.housefull 3.
    6.Brothers
    7.Rowdy rathore2
    8.omg2(cameo)
    9.namestey london 2
    10.sidhartha anand’s next
    11.Airlift
    12.A.r. Murugadoss next
    13.ekta kapoor next.
So these are the line up of akshay.so guys he might take 4th position in overseas and 3rd in india.hope everything goes well.

  • @babaji good name Kabhi tata naa kehna which exactly means the same which KANK stand for, but most of Indians that highest overseas grosser became Kabhi yaad naa rakhna. Leave apart that they loved melo drama like K3g and VZ but why they given same success to Swades and CDI which collected 6 million while the average film oso collected 10 million in same year.Still srk fans saying overseas audience are more smarter than Indians. They are the same but they loved crap like Salaam Namaste, JBJ,kank etc as they are suiting for NRI’s.

  • Take out 3idiots and D3 from aamir list. then he is far behind Hr. only srk dominates in overseas like no other. CE being non holiday in overseas and masala film grossed 20 million. then just imagine if D3 is done by srk it have done 60 million in overseas. srk ruled.

  • i think salman films are repetitive and contents of the movies are illogical most of the times
but srk & amir films offer more variety thats why they succeeds in overseas market.
where people doesn’t like repetitive and tiring subjects.

  • Great article as usual. Personally, I feel when we are considering their current position at the box office, then their most recent 3 films should be considered instead of 5. I think 5 films are little too much, some actors do only 1 movie per year and sometimes they take even longer time period in between, so their 5 films can take more than 5-6 years! As we can see the oldest film on the list was released in 2007! Business has increased rapidly in that period.
SRK was far ahead than anyone until the release of 3 Idiots when Aamir started to push him, otherwise if we are considering their consistency, then even today nobody is even close to SRK. So, if we are measuring their current position, then their recent 3 films would be fine or even 4 as I feel 5 are too much and take a long time period, just my opinion.

  • It has been 25 years since khans are in bollywood…so are well established…HR is coming up the ladder speedly and will be in top in next five years…he has talent…so no doubts about it…

With Bang Bang he will be very close to top 3 spot…

  • NO DOUBT SRK is unbeatable in overseas
Aamir is there bcoz of good scripts 3 idiots and franchise dhoom
But I think if PK has great content as of raju hirani movie then Srk position would be in danger
Hrithik Roshan was hearted badly with Guzzarish and kites
But now bang bang has potential to cross 20 million+ overseas and may take 3rd spot
About Mohanjodharo every one knows it is first time in the world movie on this subject
I believe that it will easily do 30M plus
    Wait and watch
Intresting battle this yr and next year

  • @sky : I respect aamir khan.He is very clever actor as he chooses great script and big franchise which is very good thing. But dude u said SRK delivered his biggest overseas grosses with YRF & Dharma. But u forgot Chennai express which was a massy movie and his home production but still grossed $19m.
