Top Actress in Bollywood: September 2013

Continuing our two-monthly feature, here is the updated list of Indicine’s Top 5 Female Superstars.

  • This would be based on the box office outcome of their last five movies
  • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration
  • Dated movies won’t be taken under consideration
  • In case of two superstars having equal number of winning and losing affairs, overall box office collections of their five movies would be taken into account
  • Only domestic box office performance is being taken into account
  • An exception may be considered if a superstar may not meet above criteria but ends up delivering bigger successes

W – Winner (If a film has been an Average, Above Average, Semi-Hit, Hit, Super hit, Blockbuster, All Time Blockbuster)

L – Loser (If a film has been a Disaster, Flop, Below Average)

Top 5 Female Movie Stars

Deepika Padukone No 1 Star

Deepika Padukone – (Chennai Express, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Race 2, Cocktail, Desi Boyz) – WWWWW [June position: #4]

The lady has jumped into the charts, and how! A consistent run coupled with an All Time Blockbuster success of ‘Chennai Express’ has helped the cause as Deepika surpassed Vidya Balan, Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif to find her place at the top.

With five back to back successes, the challenge now is for her to hold on to this position.

Katrina Kaif No 2 Actress

Katrina Kaif – (Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Ek Tha Tiger, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara, Tees Maar Khan) – WWWWW [June position: #1]

Katrina has done nothing wrong and the only reason why she has stepped one step down is due to no release for a very long period of time. Though each of her last five films has been a success, sum total of their collections is lesser than that of Deepika Padukone.

She has good chances of reclaiming this spot, what with her ‘Dhoom 3’ is all set to be a huge money spinner in the offering.

Kareena Kapoor No 3

Kareena Kapoor ** – (Satyagraha, Talaash, Heroine, Agent Vinod, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu) – LWWLW [June position: #2]

With ‘Satyagraha’ turning out to be a coverage affair, Kareena Kapoor has to contend with one step lower in the charts. Though she is still the only leading lady with a good clout to be still around after being in the industry for more than 10 years, she would be really hoping for a biggie to strike with a bang.

‘Gori Tere Pyaar Mein’ later this year could well do the trick.

Vidya Balan No 4 Actress

Vidya Balan – (Ghanchakkar, Kahaani, The Dirty Picture, No One Killed Jessica, Ishqiya) – LWWWW [June position: #3]

Vidya Balan could well be hoping that ‘Ghanchakkar’ was just an aberration in her otherwise spotless run at the box office for years in succession. She is capable of doing much better, as is demonstrated by her repertoire of films so far.

She would soon be seen in ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ and rest assured, her place in Top-5 would stay on to be intact.

Priyanka Chopra No 5

Priyanka Chopra – (Zanjeer, Barfi!, Teri Meri Kahaani, Agneepath, Don 2) – LWLWW [June position: #6]

Despite her ‘Zanjeer’ going down at the box office, Priyanka still moves into Top-5 and that has happened by default. Reason being that Sonakshi Sinha hasn’t quite struck big with ‘Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara’ and ‘Lootera’. That has disturbed her hit run over the years due to which Priyanka moves up one spot.

Rest assured, Priyanka would only improve on this further with ‘Krrish 3’ promising to be as huge as it gets.

The ones who can break into Top-5 in months to come:

  • Sonakshi Sinha – (Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara, Lootera, Dabangg 2, Son of Sardaar, Joker) – LLWWL [Forthcoming films: Rambo Rajkumar, Bullett Raja, ‘Thuppakki’ remake’]
  • Asin – (Khiladi 786, Bol Bachchan, Housefull 2, Ready, London Dreams) – WWWWL [Forthcoming films: No releases this year]
  • Anushka Sharma – (Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Ladies v/s Ricky Behl, Patiala House, Band Baaja Baraat) – LWWLW [Forthcoming films: No releases this year]
  • Kangna Ranaut – (Shootout at Wadala, Tezz, Miley Naa Miley Hum, Rascals, Double Dhamaal) – WLLLW [Forthcoming films: Krrish 3, Queen]

** Kareena is above Vidya as an *exception* since business generated by her films has been much bigger
