Top 5 Bollywood Films: Winners and Losers at the box office

The industry is moving towards the business end of the year, with major films like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Tamasha, Dilwale, Bajirao Mastani, Singh Is Bling, Shaandaar, Welcome Back and a few other films lined up for release.

We look back at the biggest winners and losers at the box office, so far this year.

Top 5 Winners:

  • Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Rs 320 crore): The Salman Khan starrer is the biggest money-spinner of the year so far. The film not only lived up to its huge pre-release expectations, but the Kabir Khan directed movie is also the most acclaimed Hindi film of the year so far. The big question is, will Bajrangi Bhaijaan remain the biggest of 2015 or will Prem Ratan Dhan Payo or Dilwale surpass its business?
  • Tanu Weds Manu Returns (Rs 151 crore): Before release, Tanu Weds Manu Returns would have been considered a successful film even if it finished with lifetime business of Rs 75 crore. However, the Kangana Ranaut starrer emerged as one of the biggest medium budget grossers of all time, collecting no less than Rs 151 crore at the domestic box office and Rs 250 crore plus worldwide!
  • ABCD 2: Remo D’Souza’s dance film series ‘ABCD’ is now one of the successful franchises in Bollywood. The first film did well, but the 2nd film, with a bigger star cast, took the biggest opening of the year when it released back in June.
  • Piku (Rs 79 crore): A film about shit is one of the biggest hits of the year so far and continued Deepika Padukone’s dream run at the box office. Except the off-beat Finding Fanny, Deepika now has 7 back-to-back hits. The Shoojit Sircar film is also one of the most liked films of the year so far.
  • Dum Laga Ke Haisha (Rs 29 crore): The Ayushman Khurana film opened to a poor response, but positive word-of-mouth ensured that the heart-warming film went on to be one of the more successful films of the year, both critically and commercially.

Top 5 Losers

  • Bombay Velvet: Anurag Kashyap’s ambitious period crime drama didn’t even manage a face saving opening at the box office.
  • Brothers: Expectations were high from Akshay Kumar’s first film under the Dharma Productions banner. It got a favourable release date too as Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan made way for the Karan Malhotra directed film. Unfortunately, the audience both at single-screens and multiplexes, rejected the film after a good weekend. Akshay’s costliest film, will also be his lowest grosser so far this year.
  • Shamitabh: The director of films like Cheeni Kum and Paa, directed a horrendous film starring two extremely talented actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush. The film failed at the box office.
  • Mr X: They said the film is targeted at children, but included underwater kissing scenes because the film featured Emraan Hashmi in the lead. The result? Both children and their parents stayed away from theatres.
  • Bangistan: Excel Entertainment is a reputed banner, but they went horribly wrong with Bangistan starring Pulkit Samrat and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead. The theatrical business of the film failed to recover even its marketing costs.

  • My Pick for Top 5 Winner

    1. PRDP
    2. BB
    3. Dilwale ( if not clash)
    4. TWMR /Dilwale (if clash)
    5. Bajirao Mastani

    Top Five Losers

    1. BV
    2. SIB
    3. Brothers
    4. Tamasha
    5. Phantom

  • Hope SIB gets reviews like Brothers, will be quite an achievement for PrabhuDeva and people don’t look for reviews of films like SIB.
Hope it does well after Brothers went wrong…
Too much negativity for Akki here and quite understandably so!
But he’ll be back like a lion.

  • Yay, we are happy!! At least we have come to the second spot!! O yes, the losers’ list!!! I don’t care about the BO but money by doing films like Bhojpuri brothers!!! Joker Blingg and Roxxx!!

  • 2015 has not been a great year in terms of Box Office . But i hope the last 4 months turn out to be brilliant . I don’t think Phantom will work at the Box Office . Saif is going through a bad phase and i am not sure about the content of the movie . September is looking like disappointing to me . Hero, WB and KB all are looking dull . KKPK is looking nice but Kapil is making his debut so i am not sure whether it will work or not . In October we will have SIB, Talvar, Jazbaa and Shaandaar . SIB might surprise or it will be another failure for Akki and Prabhu . Talvar is looking good but it will be affected because of SIB . Jazbaa needs Wom to be successful because Ash is making her comeback after 5 years . Shaadaar will work at the Box Office because people have appreciated the trailer even though i did not like the trailer very much . It is looking typical KJO Rom Com . In November PRDP will do huge business . If the content is good and WOM is nice then it can do mammoth business and even challenge PK’s record . Great Grand Masti will not work according to me . Because it has only week to do business and one week before Diwali is not the right time to release a Adult Comedy . Ghayal Once Again is unpredictable . It is a sequel to one of the most loved action movies of Bollywood – Ghayal . Sunny Deol won the National Award Special Jury Award for Ghayal . But now he is not a star and GOA is directed by Sunny himself . It can be a Hit or it can be disaster . Tamasha is a dark horse if accepted it will be huge but if not it will be a Flop . Ranbir is going through a bad phase and Tamasha needs solid content and a brilliant performance by Ranbir to bounce back . Wazir is a movie i am most excited for in 2015 . The trailer is absolutely Awesome . The cast is looking impeccable with Big B, Farhan, Aditi, John and Neil . I don’t think Hera Pheri 3 will release in 2015 because WB is releasing in Sept and there will be a triple clash between Dilwale, BM and HP 3 . Now the last 2 movies of 2015 . BM is the most ambitious project of SLB . He will once again compete with SRK but this time with Ranveer . The budget is 120 CR according to Wikipedia . If something goes wrong it will be a Flop . On the other hand Dilwale will be successful even if there is a clash . Unless the content is horrible Dilwale will not be a Flop . If Dilwale releases solo then it has a chance to break Dhoom 3, BB and PK’s record . But if there is a clash there is no chance to become the Highest Grossing Movie of Bollywood . So in the next 4 months only 2 movies can be termed as Safe – PRDP and Dilwale . So tough times ahead for Bollywood but let’s hope for the Best . I hope i am proved wrong . But this is just my opinion not declaration . Bollywood Rocks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • With # Dilwale SRK will be Back with a All Time Blockbuster and will Crush PK Lifetime Collections.

  • @Indicine

    Stop dreaming abt Dullwale yaar…

Its been ages that Sarrok gave HGOTY…

History will repeat Mark My Words…

    Top Films Of 2015

1} PRDP 400+ Crores for sure
    2} BB 330

  • Piku has become such a hit because the content of the film is associated with my name, kSHITtij!! Even if I am panauti for Makki kumar, I am a good sign for films that revolves around shit.

  • Shamitabh was an very nice film. How dare u to call it bad film? indicine. And also in Spider man there were lots of kissing scenes …than whats wrong with MrX?. grow up !

  • BB 325 Crores lifetime, not so short of PK collections despite heavily being affected by Rains and Bahubali in south Indian markets and other Parts.
Both classic cult films like BB and PK rock.

@Indicine, PRDP beating BB collections in BO seems logical and possible. But by Dilwale?? Absurd and nonsense!!
Your BO Predications are true but they become wrong only when you predict for SRK movies. Every time, his movies prove your predictions wrong. Haven’t you learnt yet?

  • Top5 Grosser of 2015
    1 Dilwale(solo)/BB
    2 Dilwale(clash)/BB
    3 Tamasha
    4 PRDP
    5 TWMR
    Top5 Disappoint of 2015
    1 Bomby Velvet
    2 BM(clash)
    3 Brothers
    4 shamithav
    5 Hak/mr X

  • I think bajirao mastani will be a great movie and dilwale getting trouble at home of bollywood. Maratha mamsa jaga re jaga.who says clash matter in good movie best example is BB everyon says it can’t make a good run because of bahubali and result is bahubali still behind Bb’s collection.if dilwale is good movie then there is no problem of clash.but I genuinely feel that dilwale will be a shit.

  • Now, make way for me. Peekay hoon main! I am coming with Dangal. It will be another Backlaash for me at the Dhobighat because it won’t create a dhoom without Hirani… Even though I make one movie in two years because people don’t spend money for my movies.
After all, I just have 11 hits all my career.. from 90s-2000s throughout 2004, my aukaat was nothing less than from what I posed about Shahrukh on my blog!!

  • @Legend aamir khan I didnt expect such comment from you. You never bashed Salman khan like this. Why such sudden change? Wait and watch PRDP will beak all opening day records. Also it will be 3rd 300 Cr movie.

  • @Anand… what was Chennai Express? It was highest grosser of all time. Salman for all his super stardom after 2010.. hasn’t yet given highest grosser of all time. Even his most acclaimed movie failed to do what Chennai Express did.

instead of blabbering nonsense.. Dilwale if gets solo release, will crush the records set by Bajrangi and PK. Dont worry, SRK has been Salman’s baap for 23 years.

  • @BB 600 Cr WW are you really Salman fan? Hoe can you make so many mistakes? ETT did 199 Cr, dabangg 2 did 157 Cr, kick did 233 Cr. And BB did almost 320 Cr by now. Check the facts first.

  • ra.one budget – 150 nd collection – 125 BT still many sites nd trade gave it HIT verdict ..!
Brothers – 100 budget ,collection 85 nd verdict flop ??
Nd TMK was a hit commercially BT trade called it FlOP ..!

Brothers should not ße called as flop.
It’s an average ..! Good money from sattelite nd music rights too .

Nd dil dhadkne do was also big budget movie BT u hve given it Average verdict ..!

  • @Yash khopra
    Brothers Disaster ??????
    R u retarded ?
    Its collection iz 85.
Bangistan 3 cr nd BV 23 only
So don’t include Brothers in this category .

400 cr nett from India is on the cards
1st day 50 cr is on the cards
if all goes well then 100 cr possible in 2 days

  • Undoubtly the winner is Salman khan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan this year, and I don’t think any film can surpass BB this year.
    So BB will remain HGOTY.
My most fav film of 2015.
    1. Piku- It was a wonderfully narrated movie with a typical humor associated, excellent performance from all the cast. I loved Irfan khan performance the most. big b is outstanding but his bangali diction was imperfect. Deepika is not Deepika, she is piku in the movie and not a single second it remind you are watching DP. Hats off. Kudos to Shoojit sarkar for complete hatrick with wonderful movies Vicky donor,Madras cafe, piku back 2 back.4/5

    2. Baby- it was a brilliant action thriller, wonderful locations, brilliant performances and superb direction. Though the movie lacks repeat value as the genre. 3.75/5

    3. Bajrangi Bhaijaan- it was a feel good entertainer, with brilliant storyline though screenplay wasn’t perfect like the script, pk also had same problem. Brilliant performance from Salmab, nawaz and Harshali. Kabir khan rocks. Very well deserves successful movie. But for me Dabangg remain the most engaging Salman film since 2010, bb wasn’t that engaging. 3.5/5.

    4. TWMR- It was a well scripted sequal with good to outstanding performance from actor. Kangana rocks in double role. R madhwan is good as usual. Deepak was show stealer as puppy. But it couldn’t match the soul of it prequal had.
    3.25/5.
    5. Badlapur- A good thriller of its own kind. The nawaz- varun performance are the highlight of the movie but best thing was climax, unreal but thought provoking.could be a better movie not doubt but still a good movie. 3/5.

but the best film of 2015 belong to my only south dubbed film which I watch in theatre ever Bahubali.
An outstanding visualise film with lot of creativity, passion, dedication, hardworking. Everything associated in a movie. Its success in Hindi version is a proof that how good this movie was. Brilliant performance from Prabhas. Others cast are equally good. Direction is top notch. Only hindrance is music which I don’t like.
Undobtly after Dangal, Bahubali- the conclusion is most awaited film of 2016 for me.
    4.25/5.
