Toilet Ek Prem Katha Tuesday Box Office Collection Update

‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ is on a glorious run at the box office, as the film continued its strong run over the weekend to the partial holiday for ‘Krishna Janmashtami’ on Monday. Like we mentioned in our report yesterday, multiplexes continued to sell tickets at weekend rates which has helped the film collect Rs 12 crore on its first Monday at the box office.

The decision to postpone the release of the film has turned out to be a masterstroke. Previously announced for theatrical release in the first week of June, ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ would’ve released during the Ramzan period and competition would’ve come from films like Tubelight and Raabta – even though both films turned out to be weak in content.

But with the dismal performance of Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, the Akshay Kumar film has got the ‘Independence Day’ weekend all for itself. Friday to Sunday was the normal weekend, Monday was Janmashtami, Tuesday is the big holiday for Independence Day and on Thursday Parsi New Year can also give a small boost to film business at some centres. With no major competition from a big film this weekend, ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ could go on to be one of Akshay’s biggest grossers.

The film is heading towards first-week business of 90-95 crore, which is outstanding for a low-budget film. The credit for making ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ perform like a ‘big film’ should go entirely to Akshay Kumar. The film was shot in quick time, it had a one-film-old heroine and unknown director, yet by the end of its first week, ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ would’ve collected 50% more than the lifetime business of last week’s biggie ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ and should emerge as one of the highest grossers of the year so far.

On Tuesday morning, the film has shown 45-50% growth as compared to Monday morning. ‘Toilet EPK’ is performing across the country now, even though the north is better than the south. The heartland of India is performing exceptionally well too, which goes to show the importance in today’s times of ‘desi films’.  The audience is looking for simple stories with clean entertainment or big-budget films with action and scale, and when such a film releases, they are willing to come out in big numbers.

The ‘high-society’ films conceptualised by writers and directors who consider themselves to be intellectuals and take the heartland of the country from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to Juhu and Andheri are getting wiped out.
