Three Khans of Bollywood: What separates them from others?

In the last 25 years, the Hindi Film Industry has gone through a drastic makeover. Genres, Trends, Technologies, Release Plans, Marketing Strategies and box office collections have been completely redefined over the past few years. As the Markets (both Domestic and Global) are expanding exponentially, stakes have become a lot higher and as a result stardom is something that is volatile and cannot be taken for granted.

“Change is the only constant” – Greek philosopher Heraclitus

But one look at the Top 3 male stars makes us wonder, is it really so or change is just a mere illusion? No prize for guessing that we are talking about the mega Khan trio of Bollywood – Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan. They have been successfully ruling the roost for the past 2 decades and have managed to consistently raise their stardom to new heights.

This has never happened in the history of Bollywood that 3 actors have continuously dominated for such a long time. Yes, there are other mainstream actors who have seen periods of super success during this era but it goes without saying that these 3 Khans stand out. Rather than disputing over who is biggest out of these 3, let us try to analyse the major factors which have made them the living legends of Indian Cinema.

Understanding the Audience: All the 3 Khans have to be credited for understanding their audience perfectly. They have packaged themselves smartly and are genius in handling the PR and marketing strategies. While Baadshah Shahrukh enjoys the image of an eternal romantic superstar, Aamir comes across as a no-nonsense Perfectionist who can do nothing wrong. Salman Bhai carries his real life aura of a large hearted Being Human personality. Over a period of time, they have become wise enough to choose projects which leave their trademark stamp on the fans.

Midas-Touch: Head Honchos of two of the biggest production houses of India – Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions – started their careers with Shah Rukh Khan starrers and reached dizzy heights by continuing to work with him. Farah Khan tried ‘Tees Maar Khan’ without SRK and fell flat on her face. Ashutosh Gowariker, Rakesh Mehra and Vijay Krishna Acharya were flop directors before Aamir green-lighted their projects and made them big. Abhinav Kashyap, who gave one of the most loved entertainers of last decade in ‘Dabangg’, tried the same tricks without Salman and ended up with ‘Besharam’. Arguably one of the biggest directors of this era, Sooraj Barjatya, also failed to repeat his magic when he worked with leading men other than Salman. Now Sooraj is back with his lucky mascot and ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ is super-hot in the trade.

Trendsetters: Today release date of a movie has become extremely important. But not many years ago, Ramadan was considered a bad period for Hindi movie release. Also, filmmakers used to refrain to release their movies during Christmas because of the extreme cold wave in the North India. We don’t even remember big films awaiting for an Eid or Christmas release 5 years ago. Yes, a national holiday surely does boost the collections of a movie today but the product should have the potential to utilize that benefit as well. Audience want to see Khans on big screens and that is the reason they go out in maximum numbers during the festivals. Coming to Genres, family movies completely ruled in the mid-90s with mega trendsetting films like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge and Raja Hindustani. Then again in the last decade, regular single screen masala has been brought back to the fore with movies like Om Shanti Om, Ghajini, Wanted and Dabangg. Khans set the rules and others follow.

Lovable Personalities on Small Screen: Off the big screen, all the Khans have extremely charming personalities. Salman is super entertaining as the host of ‘Bigg Boss’ and ‘Dus Ka Dum’ on the small screen. Aamir showcased his intellect in Satyamev Jayate and gained further respect. Although Shahrukh has not seen much success as TV serial host, he is easily the most charming and witty anchor of various award functions. Definitely, their craze has grown manifolds due to their stint on television.

Uniqueness: All the three Khans have distinct personalities and varied career graphs from each other. They have not tried to follow the path of other successful actors. SRK started his career with negative roles and then turned a lover boy. Aamir and Salman started their careers with romantic hits. While Aamir did some memorable path breaking movies, Salman became a common man hero with his larger than life screen presence.

The ever-growing charisma of Khans is at its peak now and is sure to continue for at least a few more years. Quite possibly the legends have skipped a generation of next superstars between themselves. They are raising the standards of stardom to a new high making it extremely hard for the younger lot to match up to the level of this long lasting hysteria.

  • @xzone true srk made dharma. But YRF ? Are you serious? The one that made YRF is Amitabh not SRK and if you deny that then you are a retard.

  • According to me
    ‘SRK’= ‘DILIP KUMAR’
Dilip kumar is known as ‘TRAGEDY KING’,SRK is known as ‘ROMANCE KING’.BY 2020 SRK will push DILIP sir on no.2 and he will have highest no of ‘FILMFARE AWARDS’.
    ‘SAALMAN’ -‘RAJESH KHANN’,
Both r SUPERSTAR, , RAJESH had about 16 consecutive hits, while after BB SALMAN had 5 back to back BLOCKBUSTERS & 8 Consecutive100 cr. Movies
    ‘AAMIR’=’RAJ KAPOOR’
Both can do ‘Everything’ i.e. ‘MULTITALENTED’,even their flop movies are highly acclaimed in INDIA as well as in OVERSEAS.RAJ sir had 2 national & 11 filmfare award.AAMIR is the recipient of 4 National Film Awards and 7 Filmfare Awards.

  • max 10 years??
see rajnikant..at 65 he is still there
i dont think anyone is moving them till 70..they all are clever and will transform their roles to be character based…and they still will be the leading men In SHa Allah.
i can only see their craze increasing with ech film..dont know how they will see a downfall..but its nature what goes up comes down to…and like heralictus said change is the only constant

  • No doubts they deserve to be at the top.
@indicine i think you guys should also write an article on both Stunt men of bollywood Akshay and Ajay for giving the khans a run for their money. I know they can’t claim any of their position but without them the competition would have been more easier. When Salman was giving flops Akshay and Ajay were drawing more crowds back then. The barren years aamir ddnt appear in movies you mean it would have been only SRK. I remembered 2008 Akshay was dubbed the threat to SRK throne. In 2011/12 Ajay was dubbed the next century king after Salman that period SRK did not even have a single century movie. Yes for 2 decades the khans have ruled but don’t forget in this 2 and a half decade not all of them have been consistent again. Am excluding hritik because he started way after these guys. No offence Khans fans we know the top 3 deserve you people without any thinking am just pointing out why Akshsy and Ajay should also have their own seperate article.Or at least let their 24 years acting career mean nothing when they have been able to entertain their fans too for that long. Once more congrats for your achievements well deserved.

  • @the phenole
i am a salman fan always talks abt salmir
    lets talk abt SRKAY
    srkay movies i liked
    sorry man,NONE
I liked the story and direction of some of his movies but his artificial acting ruins everything..so its Error not found.hope Shahcook comes up with a natural performance

  • Ok,did’nt knew that MHN was the biggest opener that time but still TMK opened very well too but the content let it down.

  • After 10yr Salman Khan and Aamir khan will rule but yrf-dharma khan is over after next eid Sarookh u time will be off after next eid make my words

  • they would consider real superstar uf they would realease film on non-holiday and make it blockbuster. shame on khans. darpoksssss

  • only under-rated khan is salman khan who at least releases his films on non-holiday and every year unlike that shy aamir who doesn’t show up his face for 2 yrs or so…. srk just does films for awards only… go sallu bhai break pk’s record this diwali… iss diwali hoga sallu ka jalwa….

  • forget about 2 ft scared khan. because with best director. best script, best release date. 1 year gape between a movie. with above conditions even Tushar kapoor can deliver a successful movie. if not block buster at least will be a hit.
I personally dod’t any bad feeling against 2ft khan, but this the truth

  • Only for @xzone :

Abhinav Kashyap, who gave one of the most loved entertainers of last decade in ‘Dabangg’, tried the same tricks without Salman and ended up with ‘Besharam’. Arguably one of the biggest directors of this era, Sooraj Barjatya, also failed to repeat his magic when he worked with leading men other than Salman.

Keep ranting you empty ‘brain’ zone !!!!!!!!!!

  • All 3 Khans are unique in their own way. If we keep aside the rankings or collections or verdicts these 3 are all equal and phenomena in their own !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not going to bash any star in this post just because some fanatics are writing craps !!!!!!!

I am a Salman fan but have always watched both Aamir and SRK movies and liked their good movies.

Salman — I have been his fan since Saajan (I was in 4th during its release) though did not like MPK much. He has given some solid performance which critics failed to notice and failed to registered huge BO numbers:
Examples : Tere Naam, Veergati, Jab Pyaar kisi se Hota Hai (played a role of father very well), Garv, London Dreams (overshadowed even AJ Devgan) and Even in Yuvraaj he did well !!!!! Though I have loved most of his movies the above list is some of his best but not all time or my all time fav list (Salman).

SRK — I used to like him till K3G but not much nowadays. I respect his hard work and dedication and his journey from a common man to a big superstar is a fairy tale for every struggler. He is still a big one. Some of the SRK movies I like:

Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Veer-Zaara, Mohabbatein, CDI.

Aamir — I was never his fan (but never disliked him as well) until DCH & Ishq. Even Lagaan did not appeal to me much (I know it is a classic). But started liking him only from Rang De Basanti, For me the game changer for Aamir was RDB and not Ghajini !!!!!!!!!!

    My favorites for Aamir :

QSQT, DCH, Ghulam, RDB & 3 Idiots !!!!!!!!!

Now matter what others say they came, they conquered and they are STILL ruling !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep burning @Babaji @EDX @Funny Chahchi @pjp and @sss (For hatred comments for SALMIR) !!!!!!!!!!! your idols (Akki & HR) will never reach these peaks no matter whatever excuses you give !!!!!!!!

  • Lol. Salman are getting benefit of surname khan. Just 5 years back who were calling khans are rulling Bollywood. Truth is People use to call srk is rulling past 2 decades now suddenly today people are calling khan trio rulling 25 years based on last 5 years of success of Amir salman. From 1988 to 2006 in 18 year Amir hardly have 7-8 hit his stardom started post gajini and salman 15-16 hit and hardly carried any movies on his shoulder. Most of his hit he was either in parallel or second fiddle. It is only post dabang he came with his own.
It is Akki ajay govinda sunny were bigger than Amir Salman in 90s and Akki hritik were bigger in 2000 decade.

  • @baba gurmeet ji ka ullu
gobar kumar’s tmk is the only festival release of recent times which failed to join the 100cr club

all Srkay movies mentiond by u like karan ko kuch kuch hota hai ,ddlj and many others belong to yrf-dharma

and when did media startd loving salman only aftr when they realisd that there negativity is nt working audience kicked away all media creatd negativity against salman

  • @Syed Ahmed Khan aka Hrithik 04:37 pm : COme to the essence of my comment. When did I deny the fact that Dabangg was a BB and Besharam was a disaster. But will this info rule out the fact that Takla khan has turned into a veteran actor and thats the reason , he has been signed as Niel Nitin’s daddy for “Neil Nitin Prem ko Paayo” ?? :P :P :P

  • For aamir and salman fans!!
Do you guys note one important point. Akshay is the real reason behind both aamir and salman success. Now you guys will ask how? Srk was the only king in Bollywood since 1995 up to 2006. This akshay who destroyed SRK’s Kingdom in 2007. Since that time SRK didn’t go back to his old form.?

  • That’s the problem with Lallu fan. They try to prove they are the most intellectual species on this planet, but in reality, their IQ sucks big time.

@Aaasha Khan 12:16 pm : So you have included all possible records, but you forgot highest opening day and highest weekend. Why? Because you knew that SRK will be having upperhand over there, so let me exclude it. Isn’t it??
Don’t try to pretend that you are very innocent , when you are not actually.

  • @Retaed 04:42 pm : Valid point. A banner can give you break, they can promote you, but they can’t make you a megastar. In the same way, an actor can give hits to a banner, but he is not the sole reason behind its success. Discussion ends here.
If Yash ji and yef was such a big banner , he would not have given a flop like Lamhay.
My comment was just a reply to those retards, who always bark that yrf and Dharma made SRK. But if you will see the success ratio of yrf and Dharma without SRK, that altogether speaks a different story.

  • Thank u Guyz ? @Arman-Azmi @Hrithik @Kalia @Salmanfan ?#Respect…

(But, I feel my Fellow Shahrukh Fanz Are Not Happy With My Comment)

  • Amir already started playing character roles. With such roles, he will continue for twenty more years. He will now focus on Baghban, Piku, Paa type character roles example of which is Dangal. Salman will play hero until his age helps, he can’t act so no character roles will be written for him. SRK is in different league already, he will play hero until before the day of his death, which I wish may never come…
