Sultan Movie Review

It’s that time of the year again. No, we are not talking about Eid. We’re talking about the day of a Salman Khan movie release. It is the biggest day of the year in Bollywood, and rightly so. Salman is back in the Yash Raj Films camp with their second collaboration together after Ek Tha Tiger (2012). Ali Abbas Zafar, who previously hasn’t worked with any Superstar is in charge of directing duties. Will the Eid and Salman lucky charm make him enter the big league of directors? How will Anushka and Salman’s chemistry fare in the movie? And above all, is Salman Khan able to keep his streak going?

Story: Sultan Ali Khan (Salman) and Arfa (Anushka) are both up and coming wrestlers in Haryana. They both have a lot of potential to bring glory for India. This is when they both strike a love affair, and Sultan’s fortunes reach the sky as he brings India the gold medal. Everything goes hunky dory with Sultan making big strides but then the big twist happens which changes everything in Sultan’s life. What happens to Sultan and Arfa? Sultan does get a chance to redeem himself after many years in a new battlefield but does winning matter or does life matter more? Is Sultan able to get back the life he always dreamed of with his non-chalant eyes? This forms the crux of the underdog sports fairytale.

Sultan Review: The first half of Sultan is replete with character building and building the life of Sultan, and Ali Abbas Zafar is smart enough to show that Sultan reaches the zenith of success before tasting the mud of failure. This way, the redemption is a lot more effective and meaningful. Sultan flows freely through the first half, and after slight hiccups in the second half finally comes into its own. The screenplay manages to capture the local dialect of Haryana but makes it difficult for the rest of India to grasp the words. We wished the characters spoke a bit slower. Ali Abbas Zafar shows his true commercial cinema acumen with Sultan and this could mark his entry into the big league.

The makers did well by hiring a cinematographer like Artur Zurawski, who is a famous Polish cinematographer, to shoot Sultan. He sees things which probably an Indian wouldn’t have seen. Sultan is beautifully shot, both the rustic rural settings and the urban arena settings where most of the action takes place. The editing of Sultan is a bit average as a few scenes which slow down the movie could have been cut. The production design and costume design give it a big movie feel without losing the realism angle. The background score is a bit too loud and overdone.

The music of Sultan has been composed by Vishal Shekhar with songs like Baby ko Bass Pasand Hai and Jag Ghoomeya already making a mark. 440 volt is a nifty peppy song and Sacchi Mucchi is the underrated song in the soundtrack. But the aforementioned Jag Ghoomeya (all versions) and Bulleya leave a lasting impression. A return to form for Vishal Shekhar.

Acting: Salman Khan has been in the form of his life. In Sultan, he shows his dedication and commitment to holding on to the status of the numerous uno actor by delving into the role of Sultan Ali Khan with more grit than we have ever seen before. He tries his level best to mouth the dialogues in his Haryanvi accent but he shines in the fighting scenes. Anushka Sharma is in prime position to replace Deepika and Priyanka in their absence and with Sultan she goes toe to toe with Salman Khan in whatever opportunity she gets. Her wrestling scenes are realistic. Randeep Hooda doesn’t have a big role but he shines as the coach who makes Sultan redeem himself. Without Randeep’s intense bravado Sultan would have fallen flat. Amit Sadh is decent in his role.

Conclusion: Sultan is the type of big film which does things a bit differently while keep the commercial aspects of the movie intact. It is a movie that is led all the way through by a charming performance by a lead actor in the form of his life. Sultan is not flawless. There are pacing issues and the accent of the actors may turn off some people, but the underlying goodness eventually shines through. If you are in the mood to spend your money this monsoon, Sultan is one of the best ways to spend it on. Go give it a watch!

Pros:

  • Salman Khan gives a great performance, so does Anushka
  • The fighting scenes are very well choreographed
  • The cinematography, production design and costume design are all pluses
  • The music is solid, even if it lacks a bonafide chartbuster
  • Ali Abbas Zafar ties the film together beautifully without compromising on the commercial aspects

Cons:

  • The editor could have chopped off a few scenes which would have brought down the length
  • The story might seem unrealistic to a few

Rating: ★★★★☆

Full of Chutiyapa but not boring

2.5/5….Is it really deserve four star??…Then Airlift & Nirja should be given 10 out of 5

  • hahaha, again 4 stars from indicine. and we all know what happens when indicine gives 4 stars to abig movie, it underperforms.
@indicine, u r really biased when it comes to giving reviews

  • So far Sultan has got pretty good reviews. All review coming are 3/5 and above. So it looks like Sultan has passed the critics test as the rating is considered very good for these kind of film.
Let’s see what audience response comes now.

  • My recommendation to @xzone-Isis and all the haters go to your bedroom remove your clothes to your birthday suit, look into s mirror from all angles of your body and you will know what crap is like. You are crap not the film. You still haven’t got the guts to be positive about anything because your hatred overrules your decency to be a human.
The Almighty always uses what we consider to be foolish to confound those who think they are wise. In this case He has used your hatred and negativity towards Salman to build a phenomenal career for him. He forgets those things of the past and every year He builds something greater.
Sultan has received a 5 star ? rating in UAE and overseas
Indicine can you tell me which other Hindi film has an 5 star rating overseas.
Now all you haters go cry in a corner and stop showing your stupidity on this site.

  • Rocky was made in 1976 and we’re progressing to pultan in 2016 by adding 50 odd more minutes and some wrestling thrown in………yawn

  • Without Randeep’s intense bravado Sultan would have fallen flat.

    Hahahahahahahahaha, LOLzzz…

  • dear indicine do you really by heart thinks its 4 star movie… just came out of movie.. come on its crap.. every body praising salmans acting.
really he was acting..? this movie would have been tolerable if better actor was casted as salman.. he just played himself.. in action scene he was good but in emotional scene he was way uncomfortable ..

anyway its bad movie.. again salman will be saved by EID like PRDP was saved by diwali..

all those salman fans.. as i told you before dont put money on blockbuster.. without eid this movie would have been disaster… less than 200 cr..

  • sultan movie review by SSS

4 stars from @indicine means a crap according to salman fans that I remebered.

It’s not a typical movie review it’s a mix of complete information about the movie along with it’s negatives(as there is no positives associated with the movie)

Jokes apart, all of my friend who already warned by me not to watch the movie at theatre who successfully completed of watching bb last time at they are now suffering from mental health.now who is responsible for their mental condition,of course they, yeah of course they’re salman fans and they didn’t listened to me even a bit and suffering now like he’ll after spending 700+ rs in multiplexes of Hyderabad.

All Abbas zafar and salman khan should be filed a case of mentally harrassing people in the name of entertainment.

The gunday legend director all Abbas zafar didn’t even spared a bit frame to torture the audience.

Believe it’s my salman fan friend’s review

Whenever bhai comes to screen they felt too icy irritated as bhai couldn’t give more than one expression and his utter garbage haryanvi is worse than even his spoken broken English in his interviews.it took all the audience to hell.

Meanwhile when Randeep hooda enters the crowd start cheering and clapping with you but you know ali abbas zafar—-the gunday legend.he seems to have taken the path to to torture the audience through out 2:30 hour.

Many of people were snoring, many were left the hall before the interval.dome were gone senseless and some still feeling hallucination and taught a lifetime lesson of not watching any salman movie at theatre.

    Negatives of sultan

There is not a bit reality which is the expectation from each salman movies ,and it is a not a biopic as they’re making fool the audience, beware think before expending even a penny after such degraded lower class movies.

As usual salamn’s non acting and single lifetime expression.

the FATHER-DAUGHTER Jodi salman-anushka couldn’t make rock the audience even in rock music.and the songs are so much irritating that you couldn’t even listen to by your naked ear.

Gunday Legend —-ali abbas zafar,he always ensured the audience that as long as he will direct he’ll make his next movie worst ever compared to his previous movies and will not spare a single audience for a single span of time to torture.

Yes you guessed right, auktan is much much much much worse than gunday, even worse than salman’s all previous worst movies and probably is going to beat the record taht even Ram Gopal Verma ki Aag and David’s humshakals and ajay devgan’s himmatwala is now looking like classics compared to this movie called phultan or sultan.

This is movie having only negatives.

    Positives

Randeep hooda managed to relief the audience for a while.but all abbas zafar ‘s intention was to torture the audience hence the movie is a torture .even Anushka too looks 1st time that much worse that I never have seen her before like that due to romancing a man who is the age of 50 but looking like 70 an OFalso due to short of height salman is looking even a bit like her grandparents.

Which is too a negativity even though I wanted it to the positivity.

    my rating—-0/5

still my suggestion to all ,as I described above I don’t want all of your to suffer like how my innocent salman fans are suffering now after watching this mahacrap of the millennium.and this is the man who visited WOMEN few adays again.a real Indians must have to boycott this movie for the prestige of WOMEN of our country and to spare from this epic millennium holder torture of all time.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL.from this epic torture of the millennium called phultan/sultan.

    #Fasal kerala

  • Sultan will take box office by storm and will be the highest grosser beating PK and the record will stay last long.. ….make my words

  • ‘critically acclaimed disappointing film for audiences’
    Bad day for Salman fans.
Kya socha tha, aur kya nikla…
    ???

  • I think you are too good in sense of reviewing movies like what was the story, what is the screenplay, what are the performances of actors etc. etc. But the main problem arrives while giving stars to any movies. Means (Dilwale=Happy New Year=Fan=Dhoom 3=Barfi=PRDP= 4),they all are same.
bajrangi bhaijan=Chennai express=Dabbang 2=3.5(now they come at a same place).

  • Khub to chale the Salman fans ne 400cr India net par karne, ab wo bolenge, hum to 400cr worldwide gross ke bare mein bole the…. lol ???
