Shanghai Day 1 collections and Saturday update

Shanghai, with hit music and good promotions, has failed to bring audiences to theaters on it’s opening day. The film has managed to collect just 3 crores on Day 1.

Even though the target audience was at multiplexes, it was at the B and C centers (where Emraan Hashmi commands a huge-following) were the film has opened to a disastrous response.

Shanghai will be a profitable venture for the producers, but the independent distributors – who bought about 20% of the theatrical rights – will suffer huge losses.

It remains to be seen if the film can pick up over the weekend, as the occupancy for morning shows on Saturday were low too.

For those hoping for Shanghai to pick-up like Kahaani and Vicky Donor did after a slow start, it looks very unlikely. The word-of-mouth isn’t strong enough for a turnaround.
