Shahid Kapoor Career Analysis: Beginning of the end?

With his latest release ‘Shaandaar’ biting the dust, Shahid Kapoor is now being called the industry’s most talented under-achiever. Given the fact that he has everything it takes to make it big as a popular Bollywood actor, box office failure has been Shahid’s constant companion throughout his 13 year old career.

Back in 2003, when Shahid made his debut in Ishq Vishq, Hrithik Roshan was going through the worst phase of his career. His much-awaited film ‘Maine Prem Ki Deewani Hoon’ tanked at the box office and ‘Ishq Vishq’ was moderately success. More than the success of ‘Ishq Vishq’, the industry took notice of a young Shahid who had ‘chocolate boy’ looks and also danced like a dream.

Hrithik was written off and Shahid, along with the likes of Vivek Oberoi and a few others, were expected to be the future stars of the industry.

Since then, almost every top banner in the industry has invested on Shahid Kapoor, but the actor, time and again, has promised a lot, but failed to deliver.

Apart from Vivah, none of his films have gone on to be money-spinners at the box office. Even Vivah did not open well, but picked up because of excellent word-of-mouth publicity. The credit for which belongs more to a certain Sooraj R Barjatya, than Shahid.

Jab We Met too relied on word-of-mouth and Kareena walked away with all the accolades. R.. Rajkumar was probably the only Shahid film that took a ‘better than expected’ start at the box office, but even that film, along with Haider, just about managed to break even.

With R.. Rajkumar and Haider performing fairly well, expectations from Shaandaar were high. Marriage, some said, would turn the fortunes around for Shahid. Unfortunately, Shaandaar is likely to go on to be the biggest disappointment of his career so far.

His next two films, Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon, are likely to be off-beat films.

So the big question is, where does Shahid go from here? Is this the beginning of the end or can he turn things around? With top banners like Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions suffering heavy losses from Shahid Kapoor starrers, will other banners / producers invest money on his ‘commercial’ films?

Check out the box office verdicts of Shahid Kapoor films. For an actor who made his debut in 2003, an average of Rs 25 crore per film is dismal to say the least. Hrithik, who made his debut 3 years before Shahid, averages Rs 60 crore per film release. And Ranbir Kapoor, who made his debut 4 years after Shahid, has an average of Rs 63 crore per film.

  • too many flops. that’s just sad. he is actually talented. he’s bad at selecting scripts. he should do something about it or else he’ll continue giving flop after flop.

  • Shahid is 100 times better than ranbir n arjunK…!!..

ArjunK has also never given a solo-hit on his own…while shahid has 3 solo hits…!!….

Shahid’s rangoon will b superhit and arjunK ‘s next film will be disaster…!!…

  • I really like him..he is good actor ..actually more than good actor..but he is not selecting proper script or dont know why..hope he will back soon..

  • He is not doing mass appealing films (at least his next few aren’t) and the commercial films he does, they’re bad. Shahid may never become a big star, at this rate. It will be a long journey if he is to become a big star – he’ll need a number of good films which are hits to establish himself.

  • he is such a talented and hard working guy, love his dancing but sometimes i feel he is preity unlucky. he should doing R…Rajkumar type of roles instead of doing crap rom-coms again and again peoples like him in this type of genre…Vivah is only blockbuster for him thanks to Sooraj Sahab

my favourite Shahid Kapoor films ?

    *VIVAH

    *JAB WE MET

    *CHUP CHUP KE

    *R…RAJKUMAR

    *HAIDER

and best of luck for his upcoming films !!!!

  • Shahid Kapoor’s biggest problem is he’s a character actor who wandered into a leading man super star status on accident and can’t modulate between the two.
So much this and now he is just going through the motions that every one expects from him.

  • Due to link ups with actresses like Kareena, Priyanka n Vidya he chose some extremely bad scripts just to work with them or to spend time with them.
He had a Hit Jodi with Amrita Rao, but he refused several films with her. They had potential to be another SRK-Kajol, actually they made a better pair than them. Now the only hope seems to be Magadheera Remake, if it doesn’t gets snatched by other younger stars like Varun Dhawan, Tiger Shroff who seem to be favourite with Sajid Nadiadwala presently.

  • Career change will be a good option. Over hyped hero only on social media. Paying public is not interested on his movies.

  • its very tough for him now to make comeback.. you never know but still i think his career is gone, unless a miracle happens

  • Its very tough for him to become a superstar
I think he should learn from saif ali khan
I mean he should do gud supporting roles in big movies starring khans or hrithik
Audience should see him on big screen and then let them decide whether he deserves this or not.

I’m a big movie buff and hav seen sid, varun , arjun , rk , rv and allmost every young actor on big screen , but sry i havn’t seen shahid yet

  • He is an average actor, definitely not a talented one.he is a gone case for sure.he even not that good lookin as well.if a talent vivek oberoi can perish, whats this guy ..!

  • Shahid has no talent or starpower. he is in the industry due to Pankaj kapoor only. he lacks great talent and raw starpower like Emraan. shahid should try luck becoming cameraman or background dancer.
Shahid tried to copy Emraan’s style many times, but failed. Even 3 khans and akki-hrithik tried to copy Emmy style but could not. Noone could match Emmy charisma.
Waiting for Azhar biopic when Emmy will rule bollywood.

  • Khans,Kumar and devgn are near or reached 50’s.
Hrithik can carry on for little.
    Who left????
    Shahid can act,dance,has good looks.
    Same for Varun.
But then who else….this is not end of shahid but Bollywood….

  • All hail the evergreens AAMIR SALMAN AJAY AKSHAY SRK who started their careers twice exactly before Shahids total career years(barring srk who started a year after Akshay). But still these 6 superstars are still the biggest and most successful actors of any generation.
I don’t see any youngistaan matching this golden generation of the big boys. Never.
Shahid is good I think he should choose his scripts and by now should have the knowledge of what an average indian audience likes and dislikes and move on. Too early to quit still very talented.

  • Really Really Sad for this Talented Guy, He is Full Package but things r against him. Shaandaar was not that Bad Film.

He needs to seriously think about his career at this point. He also Needs great LUCk which currently is against him.

Lots of Good Wishes for Him.

After Sir SRK Shahid n Varun r my most favourite.

  • @Akash Sharma – Except Hrithik wasn’t inconsistent for over a decade. Hrithik was only unsuccessful in 2002 and 2010, Shahid has delivered only 4 clean hits in 24 attempts.

Shahid has continued to mature as an actor by each passing year, but his choice of scripts has been very poor. Honestly, I don’t think we have to feed bad about it. He has been choosing those scripts on his own, nobody forced him to pick any film. Most of his flops have been typical ‘Rom-Coms’. In fact, he’s tasted success when he did something out of the box like Haider, Kaminey, Rajkumar, and Vivah. Almost all of his ‘Rom-Coms’ have under performed. That’s why I was disappointed that he signed ‘Shaandaar’ after critical and commercial success of ‘Haider’.
He has potential, he has to realize it by himself. I don’t know much about ‘Udta Punjab’, but I think his Bharadwaj’s next ‘Rangoon’ can bring him both critical as well as commercial success. His career is in his own hands.

  • Wrong verdict given to ishq vishq and jab we met. They were hit and blockbuster respectively. Anyways sahid is a huge underachiever.12yrs 24 films only 5 success! !!!!
Hope idiots stop comparing him with someone like Arjun kapoor who in just 3 yrs and 6 films has given 1 100cr blockbuster 2 hits and one critically acclaimed film.

    #RespectArjunKapoor

  • I seriously feel very sad for Shahid,he’s much much better than the likes of Varun,Arjun,Ranveer and even Ranbir but somehow does’nt gets success at the boxoffice.Vikas Bahl who gave us a tremendous Queen went so wrong and result– Poor Shahid suffers.
Useless actors like Arjun,Varun have 100crs grossers whatever the reason behind it but poor Shahid suffers.
Watch this scene from his movie Chance pe dance(watch it from 2:30),very nicely sums up shahid’s unfortunate luck.

  • Having seen 70% of the above mentioned movies I genuinely feel his failure is a mix of poor choices and luck.
Mausam’s debacle hurt him the most.He wasted two years of his career on the movie which was perhaps the most monotonous romantic flick I have ever seen.So was the case with TMK which had the potential to put you to sleep with its terrible story line.Similarly PPNH was too melodramatic and it seemed so stupid after a certain point that you wonder why would any actor give preference to this nonsensical movie over SDR.Considering his looks and dancing skills he should have done more romcoms on the lines of JWM.
But some of his movies are quite underrated.
KK-A decent romcom. The songs were brilliant and Shahid’s comic timing was perfect so was his emotional outburst in pre-climax.Better than any recent romcom
DHP-One of my favorite comedy movies.Even though it was more to do with the amazing trio of Akki-Sunil-Paresh but I am pretty sure it would make you laugh whenever you watch it at Television.Never knew it was a flop
Paathshala:Nice premise, execution wasn’t upto the mark but still was a relevant movie considering the commercialization of schools in today’s times
B Company:A nice break from YRF’s typical romantic movies. It deserved more for its unique story line

But the important thing to note is his performance has been appreciated even in most of his not-so successful movies which is commendable. If you compare him with some other newcomers who got backing from big production houses in their initial stages like Arjun and Sid then everybody would accept he’s miles ahead of them when it comes to versatility and screen presence.I am yet to watch Haider but considering the praises he earned for that movie it would be unfair to compare him with other youngsters.
It’s said Talent can’t be suppressed for too long.Hope he makes a grand comeback with Udta Punjab or else he would be remembered as somebody who had the potential to make it big but unfortunately couldn’t
