Shah Rukh Khan: Sexy, Witty and Unstoppable at 50 says Vogue India

Vogue India: Nobody knows how Shah Rukh Khan does what he does – he doesn’t either. The rise and rise of “India’s biggest movie star” is marked by chance, celestial design and a whole lot of charm. But as the actor turns 50 this November, he’s still on the lookout for the role of his career

“I want to be Batman,” says Shah Rukh Khan.

We’re in his version of the Batmobile. His swish black and chrome trailer, parked outside a warehouse-like studio in the sprawling compound of Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City, is kitted with much luxury. He sits on a reclining leather chair as a team of two men paints his armour on his face. For tonight, Ramoji is Gotham City.

“If I wanted to wake up as myself every morning, I wouldn’t be an actor. I want to be Batman in the morning. I want to be Superman. I want to be Raj, Rahul, the guy in the blood-spattered white vest with a gun in his hand and a girl by his side,” says Khan. His dream role, he tells me in the month that the 24th Bond film hits theatres, is to play James Bond. (Favourite Bond movie? Moonraker.) It’s a myth that actors are narcissistic, he declares. His only envy in the world are people who are comfortable with themselves. “For 25 years I’ve wanted to be 70 different people in the morning. I don’t want to be me. So if I loved myself so much, why would I be an actor?”

Khan turns 50 on November 2. He’s been in the movies for precisely half of his life, working around the clock, famously subsisting on a diet rich in nicotine, good spirits and astonishingly little sleep.

He is in Ramoji to finish the last leg of shooting for Dilwale, a movie directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Khan’s company, Red Chillies Entertainment. Scheduled for a December release, it marks his big romantic comeback with Kajol—the title is a throwback to their winning pairing in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) in 1995, the movie that for all purposes turned Shah Rukh Khan, the actor, into Shah Rukh, India’s biggest movie star. It is to accommodate his relentless schedule that the Vogue team—and a Victoria’s Secret supermodel, Shanina Shaik—have flown down to make pictures between 9pm and 3am.

Khan the Actor might not love himself enough, but Khan the Star is a picture of grand self-love. He says things like: “I’m an international &^**%$ movie star.” Both men are in the trailer right now. It’s no wonder that Mahesh Bhatt, a prescient man, had said back in the ’90s that Khan is schizophrenic—“a man with two people lurking inside.”

It was the actor who had responded with a self-effacing “Why me?” when the British-Indian filmmaker and journalist Nasreen Munni Kabir had pitched the idea of a documentary on his life for Channel 4. But Khan, the movie star, isn’t averse to beating up people who spawn gossip about imagined infidelities or breach the common code of decency. “The excuse that I’m a public figure and you can say anything about me is bullshit. I’m very respectful of people. Tehzeeb cheez hoti hai. If I met your mother, I’d be respectful to her even if I hated you,” he says.

There is, in fact, a lot of talk of “tehzeeb,” the Urdu word that roughly approximates to “refined manners” or “etiquette.” It is a word that doesn’t translate well. Neither does Khan. Karan Johar, his longtime friend and collaborator, phrases it best: “You can’t explain Shah Rukh Khan. You can only experience him.”

Many of us in this cinema-crazed nation of billions must have had a Shah Rukh Khan experience to make him the star that he is. Perhaps it was watching him use his physicality—the dimpled smile, the limpid eyes washed with thirst—to his best advantage onscreen. In DDLJ, in the song ‘Ruk Jaa O Dil Deewane’, Khan’s character, Raj, has a few false starts on the piano before he sings out in perfect melody. And the contemptuous lady in question is swept off her feet. That’s Shah Rukh Khan all right. Making us lose our footing when we least expect it. My sweep was when I heard him read from his work-in-progress book at the ThiNK Fest in Goa in November 2012. When he read an extract about his adolescent pain of watching his father fail, and die without pride or purse, I found myself weeping.

Adoration finds him everywhere. Women show up to tie ‘I love you’ bracelets, sometimes rakhis, on his wrists. They hand him letters and notes. Internationally, the hordes of fans have multiplied over the years. Nations have followed suit: the French have awarded him their highest civilian honour, the Légion d’honneur. “Publicly, I’m fantastically confident but sometimes I get weirded out by all the attention,” he says. “I can’t disrespect the fact that there are these people out there… not just the screaming, selfie-loving fans, but people who seem to truly love me. I can see it when the aunties come and the mothers come and the children come. They hug me, and sometimes they start crying. I don’t know which is which… so I make it a point to meet everybody with a lot of love.”

  • Is he really touching 50?????????

If 50 looks like that, we all SRKians would want to turn 50 and look dripping hot like you SRK.

  • What a joke? India’s biggest star ever? This is nothing but a joke. Indicine stop joking. BTW srk looks pretty ugly and unattractiv.

  • Wake me up when any other Indian actor achieves even 1% of what SRK has accomplished.
Hats Off Sir !! You are an inspiration.

  • Wow..I can read anything about Srk for an hour without getting bored. He is God-Gifted.I don’t know why but there’s something about him which makes you adore and love him.His struggles, his passion and most importantly the way he interacts with all his fans makes him so unique. After seeing the pic nobody would have even thought he’s nearing 50 had you not mentioned it.
Also his wit is unparalleled.Expect him to come up with best of replies to most monotonous questions and make even boring interviews interesting.Unfortunately he had to tone down his sense of humor since he was upset with the way people used to get offended in award shows.

  • Will Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale ruin SLB’s Bajirao Mastani? https://t.co/uSFn5GeFEN

Rohit Shetty’s next directorial venture starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon has upped the anticipation levels after the team launched an exclusive sneak peek into the film. Not just that, about a week back, many media representatives from all over the nation were taken to the sets of Dilwale and shown another exclusive 20 minutes video from the film. And whoever’s watched the video can’t stop appreciating it.

Cut to the real picture. While Dilwale is creating all the buzz, it’s now known to all that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Bajirao Mastani too is releasing on the same day as Dilwale. That means this December 18, Bollywood is all set for a Titanic clash.

Given that both of them are highly anticipated and hyped films of 2015, the clash would mean a division of business. For both Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani. But if you see the statistics, an analysis will give you a clearer picture. Although the clash might provide a dent to the Dilwale collections, it’s Bajirao Mastani which will be hit by a detrimental storm. Here’s why!

    Dilwale’s safe territory

Having Shah Rukh Khan and Rohit Shetty teaming up for a film can hardly go wrong. For people who disagree, look at Chennai Express. The film, unlike other masala potboilers, went ahead to become the highest grosser of all times back then, beating Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots. Also, it received a lot of love and adulation from the masses. Now picture this. Dilwale is not just a Rohit Shetty-SRK association. It has the powerful SRK-Kajol combo which can and has never gone wrong in the history of Bollywood. Plus, there’s Varun Dhawan, who’s possibly the biggest Gen-Y star currently. Why we say so? Varun’s the only new generation actor who’s single handedly managed to give a string of five consecutive successes. Beat that. Also, there’s Kriti who turned heads with her stellar act in Heropanti. Hence, Dilwale is rather in the safe territory for sure and there’s hardly any chance of the film going wrong. Even if the film clashes with Bajirao Mastani, the hype around the film will easily take it to the safe zone in a matter of less than a week’s time. We bet.

    Bajirao’s risky!

However harsh it sounds, Bajirao Mastani although looks really interesting on paper, it’s albeit a very risky affair. Why we say so? Oodles of money pumped in for the film, to make sure it’s look and grandeur is maintained. With a budget of over hundred crore and still counting (The VFX is on!), Bajirao Mastani will suffer a huge blow if it clashes with the SRK starrer. Not only will it lose out on screens, but it will also see a serious dip in its collections. Given that it’s anyway a risky proposition, Bajirao Mastani still has the chance to recover its money if it comes out as a solo release. Despite the content of the film, it will necessarily get a grand opening, only if it releases on another date. And if the film thrives on good content, then there’s no stopping it. Will the same happen if it clashes with Dilwale? Think, think!

    Star power!

Bajirao Mastani has Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra leading the pack. Despite being stars in their own spaces, neither a DP, RS or PC can match up to the level of euphoria and hype that a Rohit Shetty film bringing back the powerful SRK-Kajol combo calls for. Plus, even Varun is a safer bet at the box office than Ranveer. Why? Compare their career-graph and their movies’ box office incomes and you’ll have your answer. While people might still argue that SLB entered the 100 crore club with the same lead pair, one must understand that Ram Leela released around Diwali and was a grand solo release. Plus, the scenario wasn’t as risky as it is with Bajirao Mastani. And eventually, it’s the star power of an actor which brings the audiences to the multiplexes and the single screens to watch their films. And there, Dilwale can have no competition. Period.

    The Marketing!
Bajirao Mastani’s team is planning to take the marketing brigade to another level altogether. But no matter how much they try, it’s very difficult to get past the marketing genius that one man in the Dilwale team possesses. Thy name’s Shah Rukh Khan. Known to heavily promote his film, SRK and Co will leave no stone unturned to make Dilwale the biggest film of the year, also this being SRK’s only release in 2015. Plus the appreciation and feedback the team has received from the mini-clips and the video footages they showed to the audiences, they’re doubly sure about their product and this can’t be competed with. Also, the film has already become a craze in the Gulf (which is one of the most prominent circuits) and advance bookings have started almost one and half months in advance for Dilwale, an initiative which is a first of its kind. All this just goes on to prove the tremendous star power that the entire Dilwale commands. Even Ranveer, Deepika and Priyanka would agree!

While the gossip corridors of Bollywood have been abuzz with fleeting rumours of Eros planning to move their film to a later date, also because the film involves heavy special effects and has still not been wrapped up, we’re sure it will be a better idea to rather have a solo release on a later date than clash with the monumental film and lose out on the huge money they’ve piped in for their most ambitious project.
