Setback for Amitabh Bachchan in KBC tax case

The Supreme Court on Wednesday has upheld a plea by income tax authorities challenging the Bombay High Court order, which granted the legendary star tax relief in earnings made from ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’.

An apex court bench comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Prafulla C. Pant said: “We are of the opinion that the present is a fit case for exercise of the suo motu revisional powers of the CIT (Commissioner of Income Tax) under Section 263 of the (Income Tax) Act.”

Restoring the income tax commissioner’s order, the bench set aside the August 28, 2007 order of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) and the August 7, 2008 order of the high court.

Disposing of the plea by the income tax department, the bench said: “However, we have to add that as the re-assessment order dated December 29, 2006 had not been tested on merits, the assessee would be free to do so, if he is so inclined and so advised.”

The matter relates to the assessment order passed on March 30, 2004 in respect of the star’s income from the popular quiz show KBC in the fiscal year 2001-02.

It’s a setback for Bachchan, who made crores of rupees through the popular television game show.

  • Those who make fun of Abhishek bachchan don’t know before kbc Amitabh was in deep financial trouble so how he or Abhishek can fully concentrate on work?

  • @Yuvraj

Abhishek came to the industry after Amitabh had recovered from the so called deep financial troubles (if at all there was any)…so his failure in the films is not associated with financial trouble. If he had the skill sets to become a big star he would have done that…but his acting skills are very very limited and to add on to it he doesn’t have a screen presence, his inability to dance and him doesn’t having a decent body like his colleagues has hurt him badly. And he has never bothered to address these issues too…he got a lot of movies being the son of Amitabh…thats all..

  • Whatever the court decides.

Desperately waiting for TE3N since the time have seen the trailer. Eagerly awaiting.

  • What I don’t like about some Bollywood actors is why they don’t pay tax regularly . Learn from Akki he pays his tax on time.. proud to be akkian.

  • @ Thug – I am not talking about his debute but when your father is in deep financial trouble, you feel insequre. it was long period. i am sure that period hurt him because i felt same problem.

  • India is tolerant if u are a bacchan, devgun or kumar.
When u becomes khan then everybody loses their mind

  • @ Thug- Abhishek proved his acting capibility in bunty aur bably and guru. Media usually write against stat sons and that is not right thing.

  • @ Yuvraj at 4:53 pm : Abhishek Bachchan is simply not a good enough actor. He got a lot of push being Big Bs son but he couldn’t materialize on it.

  • @yuvraj,abhishek too could have been like salman if he would have launched by rajshri after a flop debut like mpk in 80-90’s and would have shown his 6 pack.but however he has far better acting skill salman, while still salman have to prove it even though his age crosses 50 year,he can be big star but can’t be legendary actors like DILLIPJI,BIGB,KING SRK.

And almost papa’s boys are relentless except very few like shahid,hr,varun and rest are surviving only because they came during 90’s during peoples hardly cared about talents rather than family movies/revenge sagas.but time has changed now whoever debutes after 2000 faces wrath of audiences and whoever survived because old their talents/big production films.

  • @Yuvraj yeah I know thats why I said he has limited skills…he is a good actor yes…but he fails in every other department like dance, action, romance, having a good body, screen presence….and frankly speaking he should have honestly tried to enhance his skills in these areas and results would have been much better for him.

  • @Thug seems to be a big Abhishek Hater I guess because he is Hrithik Fan. Even I am a hrithik fan and i also dont like Abhishek but I dont hate him.

  • @ANK i agree that abhishek doesnt have a screen presence and i dont likr him much either but in acting he has proved himself in Guru, Paa, Sarkar series, Bol Bachchan, in HNY he overshadowed srk, and so on. As a supporting actor he has proved his mattle many times. Just saying.

  • The problem with Abhishek, is first he is the biggest superstar’s son India had ever seen. So, whatever his talent, it will always test him against his father’s success.

Second, the day Abhishek himself tries to not “imitate” Amitabh he will be recognised. His father’s influence is so much on him that whatever he does it looks like he is copying, especially in his solo films……so sorry, but not sorry as there is only one Amitabh, not even his son can be him.

He is good at comedy and a support role suits him far better. But, being big B’s son is his biggest problem…….he can’t do away with it though………because if not for his father, he would never even have seen the doorstep of bollywood……so it has its advantage along with disadvantage….!!!!

  • @ Ank – Amitabh wasn’t Rakesh roshan that time. he wasn’t producer director and as an actor he himself was on all time low. Abhishek’s looks may be main reason that’s why he couldn’t made it big in bollywood neither he was fit in action hero.
Don’t say what is fact because how to achieve ( reasons) is important. Irrfan khan and Manoj bajpai are very good actors but if you rate them as their box office collection they can’t match even abhishek.

  • @harish you fucking idiot! We are very tolerate with khans too and that’s why they are top stars today.Moron just knows to speak shit.

  • @ Yuvraj: I never said he was a bad or poor actor. U need just more than good acting skills to make it to the top. Call it screen presence, charisma or something about u (dance, action, etc) which clicks with the audience. Abhishek just lacked there plus his movie choices in the initial years was also poor.

Dont think it has to do anything absolutely with poor financial condition of Big B. I dont know how u r creating that link. Being the son of Big B there was enuf hype around him. As far as I remember he had a debut in a big movie with a big director and probably Kareena also debuted in the same movie. I remember the movie had a lot of hype and expectations. What else kind of a start do u want as an actor? So nothing to do with poor financial condition of Big B for me at least. Plus the continuous comparisons with Big B also must have also hurt him.

And finally I dont understand from where at all u brought this discussion of poor Abhishek. It was about Big B and his tax issues and here we r all discussing why did Abhishek failed to perform big in the industry. Amazing.

Anyways if u have a different opinion, fine enuf with me. Respect all opinions.

No further comments from me as I dont like entering into long debates on such matters.

  • @sss How is your KINGS FAN holding up? Not good? yeah shut your mouth and go watch it so maybe it can be a hit!

  • @sss, MPK was an ATBB movie you idiot 1st know the fact then comment…

And putting your star name with legends like Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Sir does not make him a big star, everyone know that he don’t know acting, he is just an over-actor who survive in the industry because of YRF, Dharma and copy of Hollywood films…without these Srk is nothing..so before commenting on other actors, 1st tell your star to learn some acting…
