The clash is finally set to take place tomorrow. Akshay Kumar’s 3rd film of 2016 ‘Rustom’ and Hrithik Roshan’s first film in 2 years ‘Mohenjo Daro’ are all set to battle it out at the only place that matters – the box office.
Let’s get straight to the point.
Factors in favour of Mohenjo Daro and against Rustom:
- Hrithik Roshan’s first film after nearly 2 years – his last release was Bang Bang which released in October 2014.
- Mohenjo Daro has the potential to appeal to a larger section of the audience, compared to Rustom which is niche and multiplex-targeted film.
- Ashutosh Gowarikar is one of the best directors in the industry – he has previously directed the Oscar nominated Lagaan, Swades and Jodhaa Akbar. In comparison, Tinu Suresh Anand has directed just one film – 1920 London, which didn’t do well at the box office.
Factors in favour of Rustom and against Mohenjo Daro:
- Akshay Kumar is enjoying one of the best phases of his career. He’s doing different films and the multiplex audience – who weren’t willing to watch his films not too long ago – are now coming back to theatres. He’s had a very good year so far with Airlift and Housefull 3 – both doing well at the box office.
- The trailers and the promos of Rustom received a positive response, which is probably the biggest factor that differentiates the two films. Almost every promo of Mohenjo Daro has received a lukewarm response and generally hasn’t been liked.
- The economics are in favour of Rustom. Since the film doesn’t have to recover a lot of money (the film will break-even when it crosses 75-80 crore domestic), a 12-13 crore opening will be considered good for the film, whereas for Mohenjo Daro it’ll be poor with a lot of work left to do in the remaining days.
In short, whether it’s the trailer, promos or the aggressive marketing campaign – Rustom has had the lead right from the day the trailer was released on the internet. Mohenjo Daro doesn’t have much in its favour apart from Hrithik Roshan’s presence and the director’s credentials. The film will rely on word-of-mouth. Mohenjo Daro will have to be a very good film to even get close to recovering costs.
It’s a difficult prediction to make, because word-of-mouth can come into effect as early as Friday noon. However, we are going with a bold prediction. Our winner for the first day is ’Rustom’. We expect the film to collect Rs 12.6 crore tomorrow, while Mohenjo Daro should do around 10.7 crore.

10.7 for MJ???? so their combined total is around 23 crs? no way that’s so low…their combined total.should be atleast 26-27 cr.. So re do your calculator… I have already edited mine using 26 minimum as their combined total even that am being very stingy… But that’s at worst scenario…. Am adding 3.3 crs more to MD and 0.6 to Rustom…
In terms of verdict, the budget of Rustom makes it the more profitable so minimum verdict for Rustom shd be Hit while MD I will have to see Saturday collection and then give my verdict immediately.
If Rustom can collect a minimum of Hit verdict then I think 2007 career highlight of Akshay will shift to 2016 especially considering 2/3 movies for 2016 were both clashes.

I don’t get the point in 2 big movies clashing. But now that they already are, I didn’t get the point in people trying to support one of the movies and bringing down the other movie before it had even released. If the industry can’t stand united, atleast we as viewers should be united, and motivate the people who make such art. 2000 people work on a film. Please don’t disrespect somebody’s work before watching it and pointlessly stick to your stupid fandoms. Let our industry win tomorrow and may both the movies be great pieces of cinema.
Also expected you guys to have highlighted that 3 of Akki movies would have been clashes had Jaggo. Jasoos not backed out…But still with 2/3 clash movies and both coming out with minimum of Hit and potentially 100 crs(high possibility for Rustom) that definitely should without 2 thoughts tag 2016 Akshay kumar year amongst all the super /megastars who released their movies this year….let’s not take that away from him.

Rustom might not cross 100 crore mark. Airlift trailer was better than rustom trailer, airlift collected only 127 crore without any major clash now there is a bigger actor than him hrithik roshan, who came after a long time and track record of director ashutosh, all of us knows. Mohenjo Daro will also face difficulty at the box office due to clash with akshay’s rustom but definitely it will cross 140-150 crores.
Guys.. am working in Dubai and a pretty big hrirhik fan. just finished watching Mohenjodaro.. it saddens me to say this.. but the movie is pretty boring.. its neither historically accurate nor got a good story to tell.. poor clichéd scripting and horrible execution.. costumes are pretty bad.. pooja hedge got a cute smile.. but that’s about it.. she’s got nothing good to offer.. most of the support characters are half baked.. CGI work is also not upto the mark..
Hrithik plays his part well.. hard work shows.. but the director and script has let him down again.. I liked the music.. though sansariya song was edited out of the movie. The action sequence with two man eating giants is done well.. Also the climax is not that bad.. otherwise a totally forgettable movie.. movie won’t cross 100cr.. that’s sure.. frustrating day for me..

I like both the actors, but the bias that the Btown has shown towards Hrithik has made me desperately wish that MD come out as winner. I still wish Rustom becomes a hit.
Indicine have specifically done maximum negative publicity against MohenjoDaro to ensure the movie does bad. Need less to say Indicine has its bias or else is sold out to certain sections who are against Hrithik, I am sure if Akshay film was pinned agains 1 of the Khan actors they would have thrashed Akshay.
