Rs 200 crores in losses for Bollywood this year

Box office update by Komal Nahta. According to him, Housefull is the only clean-hit in the first four months of 2010. Read on

The trade must be pretty excited with the box-office results of Housefull (produced by Sajid Nadiadwala) and Badmaash Company (Yashraj Films) but the losses that accrued to the industry, before these two successful films were released, present a very grim picture. In the first four months of 2010 – from January 1 to April 30 – a total of 71 films were released. Of these, the only genuine success story was Housefull. All the remaining 70 films either lost money (heavily or otherwise) or were barely able to break even. Believe it or not but the industry suffered a loss of around Rs. 200 crore in the first four months of the year.

If this astronomical figure is compared with the profit the producers of Housefull and Badmaash Company (released in May) would make, the picture continues to remain grim. For, the total net profit in the two films will not be more than Rs. 25 crore on the higher side. That means, the industry is still in the red by approximately Rs. 175 crore!

  • @ indicine: i want an honest answer from ur side , if the movies are declared hit due to distributor share do u think MNIK is a hit in India from theateical revenue as some sites are claimimg to be including u ???.

    • Manish, regarding the theatrical business of My Name Is Khan in India.. Each source has different figures.. But looking back, business wise in India, it surely didnt live upto expectations. With the hype that the film had garnered before its release, the least that was expected from it was to beat the collections of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Om Shanti Om.. The fact that it didn’t manage that (and fell way short) sure has disappointed the trade and SRK fans.

But there is no denying that it did BIG business overseas and was liked by its target audience. Fox has recovered its investment, although they didn’t make as much money as they would have expected to.
