Rangoon Monday Box Office Collections

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon is a monumental disaster at the box office, the likes of which even the all-time biggest loser ‘Bombay Velvet’ did not see. The Anurag Kashyap film, which also received a disastrously poor response, managed to hold on above the 2 crore mark on Monday.

Rangoon never took off on Friday, but managed to slide down the hill over the weekend and eventually crashed out. We had to re-check the collections at several centres, because the collections at some was in triple digits for the day i.e less than thousand rupees for a film running on 4-5 shows.

The theatre we tweeted about yesterday, ended up collecting just 2,730 on Monday, with occupancy of 42 people at a theatre that had capacity to hold 1520 people over 5 shows.

Shows were cancelled and reduced at multiplexes yesterday, the older releases like Jolly LLB 2 and The Ghazi Attack had higher occupancy on lower number of shows. The occupancy today has gone further down by around 20% until noon at centres that we tracked.

There has been debate on the internet that films like ‘Rangoon’ should be made for the industry to progress, but the reality is, making a film like ‘Rangoon’ is like theatre-artists performing for a play in front of zero audience. It’s pointless. Progress is only made when the audience is willing to accept a certain filmmaker’s vision.

It’s not like off-beat films aren’t working. Pink was a major box office hit, growing after a slow start and managing to win over both the audience and critics. The reason being, Shoojit Sircar films (even though he wasn’t the director) are liked, they have an audience and it’s growing with each new film too. Here, it’s a case of audience not liking a director’s film. Vishal Bhardwaj never had an audience, he never will. Not on TV, not in theatres. Atleast not the kind of audience that is needed to recover the money that gets poured into his films.

Rangoon will finish with lifetime business of less than 20 crore. The recovery from theatrical business (share) for Viacom18 will be less than what they spent on marketing the film. The cost of production, including the actor-director fee won’t be recovered – giving the banner losses that could extend well beyond Rs 50 crore.

Rangoon Box Office Collections till date

  • Friday - 4.9 crore
  • Saturday - 4.75 crore
  • Sunday - 4.3 crore
  • Monday – 1.3 crore
  • Total – 15.25 crore

  • I had overestimated Rangoon box office and Predicted a Lifetime of 46cr, but now i doubt if it will even collect half of it. Next big movie releasing in theatres is Badrinath Ki Dulhania, and my early Lifetime Prediction for the movie: 85cr.

  • It’s very unfortunate that a film in Bollywood is a DISASTER, it’s a huge impact to the industry and to those film makers who believe in Dark Thriller Genres, they can’t make an out and out commercial films.
Now the Fate of Vishal Bharadwaj films is almost sealed unless he bounce back with an universally accepted film….
    SAD WITH DISASTER

  • It is quite shocking to see collections rapidly decreasing everyday . Saturday and Sunday’s collections less than Friday is something quite tough to digest because even poor films grow on the weekend . Rangoon is a monumental failure . This will severely affected Shahid, Saif, Kangana, Vishal Bhardwaj, Sajid Nadiadwala and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures . I think Rangoon will be out of theatres this week completely . The road looks tough ahead for Vishal Bhardwaj . He tasted success with Haider but now this is a major setback for him . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It should be renamed as mega, giga,Terra disaster.it would be gud idea for exhibitors to substitute shows in multiplexes with jolly or ghazi instead.

  • Haider was really a great film so just because of Rangoon or his less profitable films one should not call Vishal a bad film maker …!
Haider is Best Movie in the niche genre…!

  • That means there is currently only one actor in the industry who is consistently doing well with offbeat films and that’s Akshay Kumar.

  • Stop celebrate dis failures guys
N start watching films in theaters.
If u love movies n Bollywood den dis s not something dat u can enjoy.
Majority of guys doesn’t watch movies dey r just Evey where in d social network because it’s free .
To Jo dekhne ka Dil ho Raha he us film ko dekho logo ki baatein mat suno
Kyunki zyada tar log biased he AJ.

  • Now where are all the Akki haters who keep barking that patriotism is saving his movies?? Even Rangoon has patriotic elements. Then why is it an all-time disaster. Collections in triple digits!!! That again proves that Akshay’s movies are doing well due to choice of scripts and directors, not just patriotism.

  • The stage is completely set of Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Rangoon will be done by second Sunday. The rest of that week will see completely empty theatres, then BKD can come ik and attempt to score 100cr+.

  • Shahid and Saif in all these years have done nothing but wasting their talent with poor choice of scripts. Shahid should atleast now start working with VB and focus on commercial films. Vishal Bhardwaj pls come to reality and realise the audience’s taste atleast now. Even Neeraj Pandey makes offbeat films but atleast he knows where to strike chord with the audience. Talking about Kangana, after Queen and TWMR, I really thought if Kangana maintains this pace female orientated films will move to the next level in Bollywood. But disappointed!!!

  • This is my verdict of langoooon __ here we go ——— “”all time mega supreme gigantic super-duper loss making disaster””..

  • Even though kangana is arrogant but one thing she said was true tat karan johar is bollywood mafia and he is playing a pivotal role in financing of many films even though he is not related to tat film….karan johar has direct link with underworld and mafia gangs including the likes of dawood Ibrahim. .so karan has full money and muscle power in his hands. ..

  • 100% right
Progress is only made when the audience is willing to accept a certain filmmaker’s vision

what is the mean of shahid damdaar acting if the audience don’t like his movies .

today no one is intrested in dark film

  • one thing is that after the disaster of Rangoon
shahid will again do vishal bhardwaj film
he think that only vishal can show his talent
but one that shahid never understand what is the meaning of talent
when only critics are watching ur film on the free

  • @rocky If Akki was lead in Rangoon, it would have still been a disaster. Rangoon failed because its content was not entertaining enough. Akki has used patriotism to save his film career.

  • What is actual collection it doesn’t matter because yeh it is one of the biggest disaster of all time. But 1 thing why are you showing even lower collection than trade figure for Rangoon??? Why??? But you always support hrithik by saying that his movie are under reporting by trade. It is seems like that because of everyone knows that Kaabil and other 2 movies of hrithik are pure manipulative one so no one believe that . So ,you also trying to show estimate figure for those film but it affects the ranking of hrithik. So, you guys are trying to decrease collection of movies of others actors too by decreasing every movie collection.

Even you said 3 idiots hasn’t crossed 200cr mark which is 1st universally accepted 200 cr movie. Even trade and producers figure are same. Please don’t say even trade figure are manipulative.

  • Yes, trade figure aren’t accurate but somewhere near to actual collection. Sometime may be accurate. But I don’t think they are manipulative.

  • @Chakki
Did I say Rangoon would have been a blockbuster if it had Akki? Rangoon would have flopped even if Salman Khan did it.

People like you bark patriotism is saving Akshay’s movies, then according that logic even Rangoon should have not been a flop because it has patriotism. Akshay would never not even do a film like Rangoon because he is wise enough to choose the correct script and that’s why his films are doing well and that’s what I said earlier. First read my earlier comment properly.

Patriotism is just a positive element in a movie but it can never save a bad movie. If it does why is Jai Ho Salman Khan’s lowest grossing film this decade and what about Satyagraha?

  • H a ha ha ha h

Now indicine knows what is megha!!!!

I did not write that fanciful review which indicine wrote.. it is a mock review now.
I saw 5 mts of the film and predicted the worst for this film . I am pleased that I have finally seen a zero collection day for a movie .. wonderfully done by my indian compatriots .. bravo .. we should do this more often . we should have done this for ok jaanu also

  • still I am annoyed with my countrymen for donating 1.5 crores on Monday..we are a country indeed of foolish and poor people!!

  • it was me who had reported that THE FILM IS THE WORST ever made in this country.. indicine can at least give me credit for that!!

  • I think some directors have become delusional after reading stuffs on internet and other social media platforms. There are so many articles about how great a director Vishal is.In fact if you read the comments on YouTube of any roundtable featuring him you’d see users praising him and other directors of niche genres like anything and would receive hundreds of likes on their comments. But the problem is the audience that watches such niche films, consider themselves as sensible and criticise every commercial/masala film don’t watch these niche films in theatre. They will crib that a nonsensical movie is crossing 100 crores but some masterpieces(according to them) is yet to get its due. They put the blame on the taste of the Indian audience without realising that good or bad films are subjective depending on one’s mood and choices. For me these intellectuals are the real threats who hail filmmakers on the internet but watch their movies in laptop that too a pirated copy after months.
The superstars have a loyal fanbase. They will watch an srk salman movie in theatre twice even if they don’t like it.That is the reason mediocre movies of some of our superstars can never be disasters or at least takes decent opening.
Shahid is one of my favourite actors. He’s supremely talented but I must say his understanding of films is very poor.He had stated once that he would let go of films if he isn’t comfortable with the director no matter how good the script is.According to him the audience have become matured only in recent times but if that was the case a small movie like jab we met which released two weeks before blockbuster OSO wouldn’t have been a hit.The audience were matured even then,it’s just that you need to entertain them and make them feel something in those 3 hours that is why Aamir’s movies have done so well.I remember even a small movie like khosla ka ghosla was a hit back then. Some deserving movies don’t do well but it also has to do with poor release date and marketing.
Hope filmmakers realise this and start making movies for the audience which watches it in theatre not the pseudo intellectuals who would watch it in their laptop.Better make or produce short films for them.If they want to continue making movies then at least keep in mind the budget because they should realise that even if the movie turns out to be classic their audience isn’t big enough for the distributors to recover cost.

  • kangna should not make tall claims about not wanting to work with the khans. I mean its her choice but no need to be rude. Rangoon”s lifetime business will be less than salman”s and amir”s single day collection, LOL
