QnA: Reasons why Bombay Velvet failed?

Q. Can Akshay Kumar’s Brothers surpass the 20 crore mark on its opening day and become the highest opener of Akshay’s career - Faizan Tariq Khan

A. It should most certainly be Akshay’s biggest opener, but we expect the opening day to be somewhere around 17-18 crore. The second day, which happens to be a national holiday for Independence Day, should comfortably cross the 20 crore mark and could even go much higher. The trailer will be out soon and depending on how well the trailer is received, we will be able to better predict its opening day.

Q. Why has Bombay Velvet opened to such a disastrous response? How can the collections be lower than Ranbir’s special appearance film ‘Roy’? – Priya Negi

A. ‘Roy’ had excellent songs and it was also smartly promoted by T-Series as Ranbir’s first film after a year and half. On the other hand, Bombay Velvet was surrounded by negative media reports. There were rumours that Ranbir wasn’t happy with the way the film had shaped up and the makers were planning on reshooting a few scenes. Then came news that the film would be postponed by 6 months. Then came the theatrical trailer, the response to which was negative. Most felt that the film would be boring. When the promo doesn’t work, only good music can do some damage control. Music fell flat too. In short, nothing about the film could excite the audience. Most people weren’t even interested in Bombay Velvet. Having said that, opening day business of Rs 5.2 crore is inexplicably disastrous.

Q. Can Ranbir Kapoor and Karan Johar recover from a disaster like Bombay Velvet? What about Anurag Kashyap? – Sujal

A. Karan Johar is a producer / director and acting is not his main profession. His performance has been received well and even though the failure of Bombay Velvet will hurt him, it won’t affect him professionally. Moving on to Ranbir Kapoor, he is too good an actor to be affected by a couple of failures. Every actor has gone through phases when their films don’t work. Hrithik Roshan was down and out after the super-success of Kaho Naa.. Pyaar Hai. Salman Khan wasn’t even a bankable star for around 3-4 years before the release of Wanted. Aamir, Akshay, SRK have had their share of failures too. Ranbir is working with directors like Karan Johar, Ayan Mukherji, Anurag Basu and Rajkumar Hirani, he’ll most certainly make a strong comeback.

Q. Is Shahid Kapoor heading Aamir Khan way. The kind of movies he is choosing and also script oriented movies as well. Carving the trust in audience and then going commercial with good script? – Fazil

A. Aamir Khan has arguably the best script sense amongst actors in the industry. Even some of Aamir’s off-beat films have gone on to be hugely successful and also received critical acclaim. On the other hand, it’s Shahid’s choice of films that has let him down over the years. He has rejected quite a few films that have gone on to do well at the box office and instead opted for films that have failed big time. His next film ‘Shaandaar’, directed by Vikas Bahl of ‘Queen’ fame, looks promising, but it remains to be seen how it has shaped up. While films like ‘R… Rajkumar’ and ‘Haider’ have done well, Shahid needs a big success. People associated with his films should start earning money, just about recovering costs isn’t good enough.

Q. Will Bombay Velvet be removed from theatres in the first week itself? – @SrK365 on Twitter

A. If the film doesn’t show growth on Sunday, the number of shows at multiplexes will be reduced from Monday onwards and if the occupancy is too low during the weekdays, Bombay Velvet will be out of most theatres in Week 2. Some multiplexes have stopped advance booking for the weekdays, which is a sign that Bombay Velvet could be running on limited shows from Monday.

Q. Has ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ been postponed to Independence Day. If yes, will it clash with ‘Brothers’?

A. Baseless rumours. Kabir Khan has already rubbished the rumour saying “Bajrangi Bhaijaan is definitely releasing this Eid… The media reports are rubbish”

  • The next track from Hamari Adhuri Kahanni is Hasee_Ban_Gaye …..There r 2 versions
of this track, female ver sung by # Shreya & male version sung by the
    composer # Ami_Mishra himself…..

Adnan Sami has sung a qawali song for the upcoming Salman Khan
    starrer “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”

  • @Alyaska:
Oh! Come on .. One shouldn’t blindly hate a star like that guy Ajiknya does! Many readers of indicine including me know that he is an insecure person who always bashes young actors with full of hate comments!
And, u cann’t say like Ranbir Kapoor doesn’t have charisma! Have you watched Barfi and particularly Rockstar? He is awesome in that film. Ranveer Singh was impressive too in Lootera!
And I don’t think Siddharth has that much charisma. The only field where He beats Ranbir and Ranveer is his good looks. Otherwise, these two are better actors!

  • @Alayaska varun dhawan is much better than that expressionless Siddhartha and @nipun critics rating doesnt mean all the thing.Gabbar is much better than bv.

  • @indicine aamir khan has a best script sense doesn’t mean that you underrate his stardom and fan following. many people are trying to dgrade him like saying he has no craze or no big fan following. that’s really ironically ridiculous. if an actor has no big fan following than no matter how great content his movie has or how big a director he has, it can maximum be a super hit. but his movies break and shatter each and every record. that proves his stardom and star power. he has as much if not more fan following as salman. they both are equally popular, so no offense to salman. dhoom 3, ghajini and fanaa all three had average or poor story still 2 of them were all time blockbusters and the later was superhit. that speaks a lot about his stardom and fan following.

  • Treatment, music, set, Acting are good….But A film is All about story….its missing Here…Anurag is a Excellent story teller…But dont know how nd why he failed…!!!
