Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has crashed at the box office on Monday, registering drops in the range of 25-75% across various centres on its first weekday. The first Monday business is likely to be in the 12 crore range, which was expected after the film dropped on Sunday.
Mass centres are holding up well, but the big problem has come at metro cities in India. Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata and other major cities like Pune, Gurgaon have registered big drops on Monday. Mangalore has come down by 85-90% from Thursday.
While the multiplex business has begun to crumble after a huge weekend, single-screens in the heartland of India are steady.
It’s a similar scenario as Sooraj Barjatya’s Vivaah. The film was a below-average grosser at big cities, but performed on the strength of circuits like Bihar where it went on to be a record grosser. But Vivah was a much smaller film as compared to PRDP which has to perform well pan-India to recover its huge costs.
The next few days will decide the fate of ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’. Due to Salman’s presence, the film has already collected Rs 142 crore in 5 days (Rs 145 crore including all versions), but it remains to be seen if it can surpass the first week business of ‘Kick’ which collected Rs 164.21 (7 days).
Bajrangi Bhaijaan, on the other hand, collected Rs 21.4 crore on its 5th day (first working day) and first week business of Rs 184.65 crore. The difference here is not Salman Khan, but the word-of-mouth between the two films. Bajrangi Bhaijaan was one of the best received films of 2015 and now almost certain to be the highest grosser of 2015 too – unless Dilwale springs a big surprise during Christmas this year.

@Anand : Why feeling so down my brother? It just shows that a super star can bring the audience in the theater initially but for the movie to sustain it needs to have content and entertain movie. No superstar is above this be it Salman, SRK or Amir. With a series of blockbusters and BB, Salman fans had huge hopes with PRDP but what can Salman do if the movie is poor and rejected? This is what happened with Srk in HNY.
But u hve to understand tht hny was a 3 day weekend movie while prdp 4 day weekend so it’s obvious tht Monday collection would be on the lower side .

I disagree, Salmans stardom isn’t coming to an end. He just made a bad film that the youth didn’t like. The law of averages says he is going to make a few duds along the way. Tendulkar didn’t score a hundred every innings did he?
Film worked because of promotion and Salman for its first four days, but now it wil crash badly. The got lucky with their 4 days weekend because without it 200 cr would have been impossible. Flop !

PRDP – Indian heart land keep going.
SRk was always behind Salman in domestic except for 4-5 years in last decade (2000s). Now overseas where SRk was always ahead of everyone has come down to third spot after Amir and Salman. PRDP has broken every opening record of SRK overseas. BB is second highest (First highest in first phase). SRK still have to do a 400 cr worldwide and With PRDP salman is going to have 2nd 400cr worldwide. PRDP did 250 crs worldwide in 4days. Thats a record as well. PRDP is going strong overseas.
