Positives and Negatives of Nishabd

Warning?-?Spoilers?ahead?

Plot Summary

Ritu (Shradha Arya) brings home her friend Jiah (Jiah Khan) for a vacation. Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan), Ritu’s father who is indifferent to Jiah at first, slowly gets attracted towards her free spirit. What follows is something you should find out on your own.

What worked

  • The camera movement in the first scene. Vijay stands on a hill top looking down. The camera moves to make you feel dizzy just like one would feel when you are at a height and are looking down. The problem is they used this movement in 3-4 other scenes making it very irritating.
  • Vijay’s reaction to Jiah’s ‘under the table’ flirting. It felt very natural, since he has no clue how to react.
  • Focus on Jiah’s knees to show sensuousness. Much better than focusing on the breast and butt.
  • The combination of sitar, flute and drums in the last scene between Vijay and Jiah.

What didn’t

  • Vijay yelling at Ritu. Just does not make sense
  • Ritu’s maternal uncle’s character – hard to believe such cool-headed people exist.
  • In the scene after Vijay, his wife and Jiah look at Jiah’s pictures there is glint of suspicion in the wife’s eyes. But that is not carried forward.

Nitty-Gritty

This section lists things that I think are not important to the overall impact of the movie. In most cases, it could be explained away by something like, “we noticed the glitch after the scene was shot and there were schedule/budget issues and thus we could not re-shoot it”. I like giving the makers the benefit of doubt, but I am amused nevertheless. Hopefully, they will tickle you too.

Okay, this time I am absolutely nit-picking!

  • Was that a soap Jiah uses in the bathroom? No lather at all?
  • In one scene, the camera positions alternate between showing Vijay from front and back. Maybe it was the lighting, but his hair looked shiny-gray from behind and blackish from the front.
