PK Ticket Price Analysis: Compared to Happy New Year and normal movies

Our inbox has been bombarded with mails after the “PK Ticket Price” article that we published last evening. Aamir Khan’s spokesperson had said in a statement that the makers have decided not to increase ticket prices. But when we started receiving emails and tweets from our readers, we decided to do a quick research on ticket booking portal bookmyshow and a few exhibitors across the country.

The results were shocking.

The ticket prices of PK have not just been increased by 10-15%, but some multiplexes are selling tickets for 30-40-50% more than other releases. Premium tickets, at some centres, are also higher than other festival releases like Kick and Happy New Year.

In fact, a reliable source has informed us that Gaiety Galaxy has decided not to screen PK due to disagreement over ticket pricing.

Below is a quick comparison between the ticket prices of PK compared to normal movies and bigger releases like Happy New Year (HNY) and Kick.

  • 24 Karat Jogeshwari (Mumbai) – Normal movies Rs 250, HNY / Kick Rs 300, PK Rs 300 (same as big festive releases)
  • Big Cinemas Metra (Mumbai) – Normal movies Rs 350, HNY / Kick Rs 400, PK Rs 420 (higher than HNY / KICK)
  • Fun Cinemas Shahdara (Delhi) – Business class tickets – Normal movies Rs 400, HNY / Kick Rs 500, PK Rs 600!
  • Big Cinemas Ansal (Noida) – Normal movies Rs 150, HNY / Kick Rs 180-200, PK Rs 220.
  • Cinepolis (Mangalore) – Normal movies Rs 150, PK Rs 200.

And finally, at PVR Forum Mall Koramangala (Bangalore), PK ticket prices have doubled. Night show of Action Jackson or Lingaa (Tamil) on a weekday costs Rs 190. For the same show tomorrow, a ticket of PK has been priced at Rs 380!

In short, the ticket prices of PK are either at the same level of Happy New Year / KICK or higher.

  • Lie caught again of Aamir Last time he said Dhoom 3 ticket prices are not hiked but when we went to theatres the price hike was 30-40%.

Don’t Lie aamir if you can’t achieve the love of Public.
Attracting audiences with this cheap techniques won’t work now

  • Those who can afford will see early, those not will wait for the dust to settle. As simple as that. No one is forcing you to see.

  • In Mulund, the rate is varying from 240 to 380. Really disappointed. Men like Aamir and Hirani who talk about not chasing box office are doing the same thing as the rest.

I’d rather appreciate Salman and Srk who increase ticket rates without misguiding people. VVC and team aren’t following any ethics of marketing. Lying about ticket rates is the worst marketing decision by the team! Thoroughly disappointed :(

  • This is the known quality of our perfectionist aka Amir Khan. He,innocently, plays with facts in such a way that people won’t have any other option else believing his words. I remembered @indicine you had published another article, quoting Amir that we have not made PK to break any record and we are going to release it on limited screens (say 3000-3500). Now with 5000+ screens, his first claim proven wrong and again he was saying we are not going to increase the ticket price. But this claim, too, is fake.
I’m not saying that increasing the ticket price or earning the profit is bad, as makers make a movie only for the sake of revenue, but making such bogus claims that I’m the only saint and rest all are dacoits is not good.

  • Always having a pop at Aamir…. You posted the same anti Aamir articles during Dhoom 3 highlighting the higher rate of tickets compared to other movies and again you doing it when you havent posted the barrage of articles you normally post daily for when for instance Thakurs movie releases. Jeez for the love of God get this through your overworked mind (haters) once and for all- ticket rates are high bcoz ppl out there are obviously willing to pay that rate- if nobody was willing to pay it then prices would fall- simple

  • Aamir Khan always lies… he didnt give Amol Gupte due credit for Taare Zameen Par…. he said that 3 idiots was NOT inspired by Five Point Someone, etc etc… so its not surprising that he has lied about PK’s ticket prices…. the good thing is that he makes quality movies… Dhoom 3 though was stupid and an exception…. but Hirani-Aamir combo should spell magic and hence people wont mind spending the extra buck to watch in on the big screen. I am pretty sure that the single screens ticket prices wont be hiked…. its only for multiplexes where people from upper middle class mostly goes and they will spend the extra cash.

  • completey agree with this article of indicine.from yesterday I m saying that pk price is on d same level or slightly higher than kick,bb,hny,sr,d3 etc.

in Kolkata ticket prices r exactly on the same level

  • @indicine in Bangalore weekend starts from Friday and the cost for any movie ticket for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are above 350 and from mon -Thursday tickets are below 190, if u don’t know anything then don’t post anything with false information. Happy new year/kick ticket pricing where 350 on weekends and 160 during weekdays and for PK its 380 and 190, everyone from Pk team have raised the tickets bcoz have are PK’s

  • First you said PK’s ticket price is increases by 40-50% and then you said ” In short you say PK is on the same level of HNY and Kick…” WTF are you trying to say??

    • @mrryesno, don’t misquote! We said ticket prices are on the same level of HNY or higher.

The problem here is not about the increased ticket prices. That happens with every major release and PK is easily the most-anticipated film of 2014. But why release a statement to the media that the ticket prices have not been increased, when they cost as much as HNY/Kick or more?

  • Here at my place ticket price is same as kick i dnt know abt hny becoz i didnt went anywhere near to cinemas at time of hny
by increasing rates they may b aiming for records

  • I have realized that all these superstars are of same breed. If they get a holiday release, they won’t even bother about the public.

I find it funny when fans bash each other for giving bad reviews. I mean, if I pay as much as 400 bucks for 1 movie, I want it to be “Really. Really. GOOD!”

Will catch pk on a weekday morning show. 400 bucks for 1 movie is just too much!

  • The reason why big films have higher ticket price than normal film is because people dont mind in paying extra money for watching their films

  • Ticket prices are higher than other releases still people are dying to buy them that shows the crazzz of pk nd aamir.

  • Thats why i just don’t like this selfish aamir. He can fall to any extent just to break records and thinks himself as some legend.
He is the biggest hypocrite we have today,
Doing a show called satyamev jayate and telling lies, waah re waah,
This puny khan knows that he can never achieve srk or even salman’s stardom so he uses every other way to deciet the audience.
    Shame on this aamir

  • A very small sample to be making big claims- pro srk media or anti aamir media- eitherway footfalls for the movie will determine if it was a good movie and I predict more ppl will watch this movie than any other movie of 2014- tickets sold is what matters- not at what price…

  • but I disagree with indicines last line-aj night show costs 180but pk 380!!!
@indicine I think u checked aj’s wwekday ticket price and u r comparing it with first weekend ticket price of pk thats y this huge difference btwn their cost.plus aj is in 2nd week where ticket prices r lower than 1st week.so u completey went wrong there

  • Now coming to the ticket prices, @indicine: That PVR , Kormangala, (which you have quoted into your article) is ten kms from where I stay and I often visit there. I enquired for the tickets and the ticket prices are ?750 and ?950 respectively for Saturday morning and afternoon shows, whereas the same tickets were available at ?550 and ?750 during HNY release. Shocked by the sudden price rise (or inflation) I moved to my budget destination – Cinemax, central mall, outer ring road, Bellandur (as for couple of tickets I would be paying ?2000 which is not a great deal in anyway ;-) ) . There also, Saturday morning and afternoon tickets were available at ?250 and ?350 respectively whereas the same tickets were available at ?210/?280 at the time of Kick/HNY. So the conclusion is, ticket prices are not at par of Kick/HNY but they have been increased significantly.

  • Why i hate aamir,contd-
At the aap ki adalat ceremony srk and salman were dancing and they requested aamir to join,he replies-arre yaar ye sab nai hota hai mujhse. This puny star is a coward,he is afraid to respect his profession, what he does in films,he is reluctant to show that on stage.shame.
He does’nt goes to comedy nights because he thinks only low budget films r promoted there.
Never shows grattitude towards his fans, never interacts,Comes at the time of his film release and expects them to pay prices

  • @indicine 12:38pm

Is that your reasoning behind posting this article…. You actually want us to believe the makers of PK have given out false statements to the public…?

I aint buying it- PKs demand dictates pricing n in business you try to obtain maximum value- first day first show is where maximum value is at- only a fool of a theatre owner would keep prices low as per producers request- its a working day but demand is such that it is getting a festive releace price strategy- thats the pull of the movie- huge story is that.

  • Thanks to some legendary directors like ashu gowariker, hirani, rakesh mehra, Aamir is still existing otherwise he would have been seen in Bigg boss house .

  • Here in delhi ticket prices of pk are generally lower than hny and kick. Lowering the ticket price is not just the perogative of the makers, the exhibitors and distributors should also accept the demand.
