Ketan Mehta’s ‘Rang Rasiya’ or ‘Colours of Passion’ is a bilingual film starring Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen in the lead. The movie certified as an ‘A’ Grade film is a take on the famous painter of the 19th century Raja Ravi Verma and his muse Sugunabai.
Although the director has restricted Rang Rasiya to the modest budget, censorship restraints is something he could never meet with, as he has taken complete liberty in portraying Varma’s sensuous relation with his muse. Infact in one of the sensuous moments Nandana’s bossom is clearly exposed and the board sent a notice to Ketan Mehta ordering for the immediate deletion of the scene.
The subject matter dates back to the 19th century but the film seems to have a contemporary appeal as the conflict between artistic freedom and social taboos that pestered Raja Ravi Verma during his years is still a matter of debate in India.
