Overseas Ranking: Top Stars of Bollywood

Aamir Khan has finally edged past Shahrukh Khan in the overseas markets for the first time. Not too long ago, Shahrukh was in a league of his own, but after the super-success of ‘3 Idiots’ Aamir Khan films too have been taking record-openings. Aamir currently has two of the highest grossers in the history of Indian cinema to his credit – Dhoom 3 and 3 Idiots, only two films that have crossed $25 million overseas. The $25 million mark could be considered equivalent to the 200 crore club in the domestic market.

The rest of the list remains the same.

  • The list below would be based on the gross box office collections of an actor’s last five movies. To keep the comparison fair, all figures are in US dollars.
  • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration. Non-commercial and art films like ‘Dhobi Ghat’ have also not been considered.
  • Dated movies that released before 2007 have not been considered.
  • We have only included 8 actors in the list because the rest are not bankable stars overseas. The likes of Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, with a couple of solid overseas performers behind them, are emerging as stars to watch out for. Currently, it’s unfair to include them in the list.
Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma - PK

Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma – PK

Rank 1 Aamir Khan: Aamir Khan has finally ended Shahrukh Khan’s 2-decade long overseas dominance. With the release of his upcoming film ‘PK’, Aamir is likely to establish himself as the new king of the overseas markets. While the consistency and craze for Shahrukh will be difficult to match, Aamir too has a loyal fan-following which extends to countries like Japan and China. He currently has the highest grossing overseas film to his credit, Dhoom 3, which released in theatres during Christmas last year.

  • Dhoom 3 – $31 million
  • Talaash – $8.95 million
  • 3 Idiots – $25.9 million
  • Ghajini – $7.75 million
  • Taare Zameen Par – $3.20 million
  • Total – $76.8 million (average $15.36 million per film)

Rank 2 Shahrukh Khan: An actor who has dominated the overseas markets like no other star in the history of Indian Cinema, Shahrukh Khan remains the biggest crowd puller outside India. His lowest grossers are far higher than the highest grossers of most other actors. However, Aamir Khan films have taken business to another level in the overseas markets. Happy New Year had to collect $23.5 million or more for SRK to retain the top spot, the film collected about $15.9 million.

  • Happy New Year – $15.9 million
  • Chennai Express – $18.95 million
  • Jab Tak Hai Jaan – $13.25 million
  • Don 2 – $11.25 million
  • Ra. One – $10.9 million
  • Total – $70.5 million (average $14.05 million per film)

Rank 3 Salman Khan: The biggest star in India is at number three overseas and lags way behind Aamir and Shahrukh. Most of his films belong to the action / masala genre, which could be one of the reasons why his films don’t perform as well in overseas territories. His latest release, Kick, was also his highest grosser ahead of Ek Tha Tiger. Currently, Kick is the 3rd highest overseas grosser of the year after Happy New Year and Bang Bang.

  • Kick – $11.3 million
  • Jai Ho – $6.1 million
  • Dabangg 2 – $8.48 million
  • Ek Tha Tiger – $10.4 million
  • Bodyguard – $8.3 million
  • Total – $44.58 million (average $8.92 million per film)

Rank 4 Hrithik Roshan: The super-success of Bang Bang in the overseas markets has closed the gap between Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan. It will be interesting to see if Hrithik can go past Salman after the release of Mohenjo Daro in 2016. The Top 4 stars are the biggest crowd-pullers overseas, the gap between them and the rest is pretty big.

  • Bang Bang – $13.5 million
  • Krrish 3 – $8.78 million
  • Agneepath – $6.1 million
  • Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara – $7.21 million
  • Guzaarish – $3.22 million
  • Total – $38.81 million (average $7.76 million per film)

Rank 5 Ranbir Kapoor: Besharam under-performed big time, but Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was a massive success at the box office. Barfi and Rockstar too did well.

  • Besharam – $2.96 million
  • Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – $10.45 million
  • Barfi! – $5.86 million
  • Rockstar – $3.36 million
  • Anjaana Anjaani – $3.2 million
  • Total – $25.83 million (average $5.17 million per film)

Rank 6 Saif Ali Khan: Saif’s latest release Happy Ending has fared poorly in the overseas markets. The film has collected $1 million in its opening weekend, but the success of Race 2 and Cocktail ensures that Saif continues to hold on to the 6th spot. Happy Ending should collect around $1.5 – 1.75 million by the end of its run as it has dropped all over on Monday.

  • Happy Ending – $1.75 million (expected)
  • Humshakals - $2.65 million
  • Bullet Raja- $1 million
  • Race 2 - $6.4 million
  • Cocktail - $4.3 million
  • Total – $16.1 million (average $3.22 million per film)

Rank 7 Ajay Devgn: Singham Returns has done well and so have most of his films directed by Rohit Shetty. Apart from those, Son of Sardaar was a decent hit. Devgn is ahead of Akshay Kumar by a small margin. Films like Action Jackson don’t perform well overseas. If the film collects $5 million or more, Ajay will take the 6th spot, if it collects less than $3.25 million, Ajay will go below Akshay to Rank 8.

  • Singham Returns – 4.3 million
  • Satyagraha – $2.4 million
  • Himmatwala – $1.3 million
  • Son of Sardaar – $2.8 million
  • Bol Bachchan – $4.1 million
  • Total – $15.1 million (average $3.02 million per film)

Rank 8 Akshay Kumar: Singh Is Kinng (7.1 million), Housefull 2 ($6 million), Heyy Baby ($4.4 million) are several others were hugely successful films. Back in 2007 – 2008, Akshay movies used to fare better than Aamir, Salman and Hrithik’s. But his last few films have under-performed big time. His biggest hit in the last 2 years is Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty.

  • Entertainment – 2.8 million
  • Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty – $4.2 million
  • Boss – $2.75 million
  • Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara – $1.85 million
  • Special 26 – $2.75 million
  • Total – $14.25 million (average $2.85 million per film)

And finally, we also have the list of the Top 10 highest grossing films overseas. Shahrukh Khan has a staggering 6 films in the Top 10, Aamir Khan has 2, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan have one each.

  • 1. Dhoom 3 – $ 31 million
  • 2. 3 Idiots – $ 25.9 million
  • 3. My Name Is Khan – $22.98 million
  • 4. Chennai Express - $ 18.95 million
  • 5. Happy New Year – $ 15.9 million
  • 6. Bang Bang - $13.5 million
  • 7. Jab Tak Hai Jaan - $13.25 million
  • 8. Don 2 - $11.25 million
  • 9. Kick - $11.3 million
  • 10. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna - $10.8 million

  • I really feel bad for indicine…. they have to even reply to fools who do not even understand that My name is khan isnt in last 5 movies of SRK.

Someone has even make calculations by excluding Ra one and including MNIK. LOL. Idiots.

  • There is a saying in the movie world, you are only as good as your last film.

Indicine has put the last 5 films collections of movies where the actor is the lead actor and not just one of the actors. So, i feel indicine is right here.

  • @indicine, if boi.com ranking favours the actors who work in 1-2 films in a year then same thing happens in your ranking too.. as we all know if an actor does 3-4 movies a year then surely his movies will collect less in its lifetime as compared to others.. so akshay kumar suffers here also as you consider the lifetime collection of the movies..may be your system slightly better than boi in this regard but it’s not making much difference with boi.com ranking.. so you cannot say that your ranking doesn’t favour those actors who do less movies in a year…..
but atleast boi.com ranking looks much better, as they consider just weekend collections by setting a threshold for a good opening weekend, which depends on release size.. and atleast don’t compete with boi.com as they are they best in box-office analysis because they are meant for just box-office and not for gossips or bollywood news or rumours…. i am not saying that they provide exact datas always but atleast they are the most neutral and beleive in their own work and are completely independent… they don’t post any data based on what is being published in today’s media, and what is announced by the producers.. instead they have their own sources and they go with them…

sorry indicine… plz don’t mind as i know i have written something which you may not like….
but let me tell you you are the best bollywood site of the nation for sure, which provides bollywood news, gossips, trailors, awesome reviews of movies… but yes in the territory of boxoffice analysis its boi.com who are ahead of you………

  • HNY was a huge failure in overseas inspite of SRK roaming from country to country begging people to watch his film.
If Aamir does things like SLAM for each of his movies then even $40 million is very easy for him.

  • Wrong calculation

Still Shahrukh khan no.1 in overseas

Correct ur calculation u missed my name is khan collection. in shahrukh list.

  • Wrong Calculation By Indicine

Shahrukh still No.1 in overseas. Just add My Name is Khan collection in his list.

    Fake calculation

No. one match Shahrukh in overseas. He is No.1 star in overseas.

  • Lol

So much fuzz about whose movie has collected what. Movies were made to entertain the audience. Now with such comparisons all we get is the fan wars.

  • Sehwag had two tripol century bt sachin had none. That doestnt mean that sehwag is a better batsman. When it comes to oversease no one can compete wid srk let alone edge past him.just 5 recent movie cant change the fact.

  • Talaash(non-commercial film),released in non-holiday period collected 9million and Don2,which has a brand value and released in christmas period collected only 11million.And still stupid srk fans questions Aamir superstardom??????????

  • After the end PK Amir has no significant release within 2 yr so srk will get his place back with Fan & Raees i think…

  • Why don’t you added my name is qhan this movie reIeased after 2007 if you add this movie than its totaI is above 80 miIion

  • Indicine ranking is good…but the comments followed by viewers are baseless…there should be some logic behind everything….

SRK is no less than any one of the top 4 stars nor is more than any of the top 4 stars….His stardom is intact…but his films lack strong content…it is his starpower that is getting money for his movies..why u want him to be back as King when he was not a King at all after 2004 in India…

After PK Aamir lead will extend to another level…Fans can’t save SRK movie Fan…content has to be there…Hrithik will get almost close to Salman in overseas after Mohenjadaro as it will replace Guzaarish….

  • if u comparing 3idiot or dhoom3 with srk last relases it no doubt Amir is in top position. means if sachin fail to deliver 100 or pathan make 100 he is better than sachin…good indicine..can you answer anyone???

if performance wise if you take a look.

    sharukh khan
    salman khan
    amir khan
ranbir kapoor soon will be replacing Amir…if Amir will not leave his attitude..he will not attend film fare..at the same time tried very hard to beg Laggaaaam…

  • sharukh khan always a way head of Amir and ..and thats the reason Amir hate him he cannot see sharukh khan star dom and jealous of him…
came behind and completly wash out ….i this regard i respect salman he never hate or jealous of anyone neither sharukh nor Amir…please this alien should learn something how to be good..

  • amir say he never repeat director…one thing i want to clear…no one like bad teste over and again..
secondly than why he repeat hirani? means his logic fails..when you sucess you will repeat..

  • lame people say srk depend on kj let me clear to you….karan johar launch with SRk Kuch kuch…and result all know…
    same for Aditya chopra…
    SRK = aditya + karan.
    accept it.

  • Amir tried with the great Yash Ji…with Prampara 1992…it was huge disaster and only flop of in yash ji credit “Amir is Daag in yash ji”

  • @romance puen you better get ready for 3 idiots return. Yes, PK will prove aamir’s stardom which is way bigger than Rukh Rukh AKA shahrukh. If shahrukh was in talaash, it would have been a big flop. So get a life. Shahrukh’s stardom will be checked with Pankha AKA Fan. Get ready for paheli returns. Lol.

  • Aamir is way ahead of shahrukh in overseas. Period. No matter how many retarded excuses his retarded mentally challanged fans give. Samir is baap of shahrukh in stardom. Aamir’s rules Bollywood in overseas and domestic. PK will smash CNY’s records in domestic and overseas in just few days.

  • The no. of comments in this post gives the indication that srk fans ki f*t gayi or can say jal gayi???Intesrtingly they not believing boi figure for hby 183cr domestic all version and 340cr ww. but posting their ranking but I think they fools aren’t aware since Dhoom3 release to Oct 2014,Aamir was no. 1 in their overseas ranking.lol.
@aman I can think what I can if I can come close to fact, fanaa grossed 6.25 in overseas and till than kank weren’t released,it was top 6 in UK ranking than,I was not sure about Don figure whether it was 7million or 6 that’s why I said so. For your intelligence I hope you didn’t forget your prediction with hny 600cr while ultimately it ended with 340 ww.So my facts is close to the actual figure but your imagination took you on different planet. I don’t think I need suggestion from a fool like u.
@kibgshuk yes Diwali is not festive there as eid or Christmas, but why you srkians keep chanting 30million overseas??? Are you guys come for fact just after your prediction fallen down For Aamir he not only surpassed srk with figures bit also challenging him there.Do you know when Talaash released it weekend figure was higher than jthj weekend gross in overseas but because jthj had 6 days weekend plus movie appreciated there which takes it grossed 4.5 million more than talaash.Apart from jthj till 2012 srk Christmas release don2 collected just 2 million more than talaash and ra 1 .5 million. Both were hugely promoted in overseas too.Ghajini collected 7.06 million in 2008, till than rnbdj who continuously collecting well in Christmas time too in overseas grossed just 1.4 million more. so for you guys if 15 million difference (hny vs d3) or 8 million b/w (mnik vs d3) than why we even count difference of mere 1-2 million big.Lol.
Fanaa in 2006 grossed 6.25 million till than highest overseas grosser was vz 8.4 million so it grossed 75%of vz than but our king despite being hugely popular not able to collect 50% with don2 as compare to d3 or 3i.If srk is so big on his own than why hr failed to beat mnik since his last 5 films.answer is no kjo-kajol were associated.I bet even fan won’t cross mnik or 3i while Pk will beat hny and CE definitely.
