Films that belong to a popular or successful franchise have a big advantage at the box office, especially on the opening day as fans of the franchise throng to theatres to watch the film in theatres.
Dhoom 3 got the biggest opening of all time – for a film belonging to a franchise, although Dhoom 2 in 2006 also took a record-breaking earth-shattering opening when it released.
The second film in the list is Singham Returns. The first Singham film opened very well, but the sequel – which released on Independence Day in 2014 – was phenomenal.
Krrish 3 stands at No 3, but the business of the film was affected by the pre-Diwali period. The opening of the previous Krrish (2006) film was even bigger and record-breaking. Back then, it was the first film to collect Rs 5 crore on its opening day.
Dabangg 2 set the record for the highest non-holiday, while Don 2 did very well for a film that released nearly 5 years ago.
Akshay Kumar’s latest release ‘Housefull 3’ finds itself below Don 2 and above Race 2 (holiday release). Welcome Back and ABCD 2 exceeded expectations last year.
Note: Advantage of a national holiday is around 35%.

Had it got a holiday opening, it would have easily collected around 40 crores !!

Dhoom 3’s opening day is easily the most phenomenonal opening in the history of Bollywood. 36 crs on a non holiday working day!
I still remember how excited trade was in 2013. There were 1.5 km lines at big multiplexes to get tickets on the 1st day.
Aamir’s name attached to Dhoom made the whole world take notice of D3.
It’s been 3 years and no film has come close to breaking this record of non holiday.
In the future also, only 3 Idiots sequel can break this record. Infact, 3i sequel can even break all holiday opening records on a non holiday.
Aamir Khan rules Indian Cinema. Dangal as everybody knows will be a masterpiece with huge critical acclaim and universal appeal.

Lol krish 3 had manipulated its figures from day 1.
The actual day 1 collection was 18.5 crs. Rithik and his dad are used to these manipulations.
Hrithik’s stardom is over. Ranveer, Varun, Ranbir are all bigger stars than HR.
And because of his manipulations in collections, which was evident in both Krish 3 and bang bang, he has list all respect.
But it’s very rare for any movie to better it’s prequel.Lage raho,twmr and Dhoom 2 are probably the only films which were way better than its prequel.
I absolutely loved Don 2.It deserved a blockbuster verdict IMO.Even Housefull 2 is one of the finest comedies of this decade no matter what critics say.
I always knew that Housefull 3 was going to collect around 15 crores on its opening day..
Lifetime would be 110-120 crores at maximum..

BTW sharman joshi had just said that there are plans to make a sequel to 3I.I just can’t imagine the business it could do if it turns out to be true.Even 1000 cores is possible worldwide.
Opening of slapstick comedy films can never be compared to big budget Dhoom,Krrish films.
More so when your trailer and music was poorly received.
If Salman makes a sequel to Ready and Kick,you can’t expect Ready 2 to open better than Kick 2.

I guess 15.21 crore is good for a comedy movie. Had it been an action comedy film, the collection would be higher. The music also was disappointing. Anyway, Family audience are loving it and one should not forget that it was the family audience that made The Jungle Book a huge blockbuster few months back. Thanks for the article.
