October 2014 Box Office Report: Super month for Bollywood

October was a great month for the industry, with two highly anticipated films featuring two of the biggest superstars, releasing in theatres – Bang Bang and Happy New Year. As far as the domestic collections are concerned, both films weren’t upto trade expectations, but did blockbuster business in the overseas markets.

Bang Bang: The month began with Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang, his first film after the super-success of Krrish 3 and his leading-lady Katrina Kaif’s first film after Dhoom 3. The film opened very well at the box office, but failed to sustain well enough to be a mega-grosser. Bang Bang is still running at select few screens, and even though the pre-release expectations were much-higher the film finishes with lifetime business of Rs 182 crore in India (gross of Rs 240.8 cr – including entertainment tax) and Rs 80.3 crore overseas. The worldwide gross of Bang Bang stands at a huge Rs 321.1 crore. The film would have probably collected around 5-10% more if not for the clash with Haider. India – Hit, Overseas – Blockbuster.

Haider: Vishal Bhardwaj’s critically acclaimed Haider did fairly well at the box office too, even though it clashed with a big film like Bang Bang. It took a decent start and remained steady through the entire week. The growth in business didn’t match the appreciation that the film was receiving, because the audience for these kind of films is limited to select few big cities only. Haider is also one of those few films of Bhardwaj to recover its costs through theatrical business. Verdict – Hit.

Between the first week of October and Diwali weekend, 6 small films released – Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami (1.62 cr), Tamanchey (1.5 cr), Spark (0.1 cr), Jigariyaa (0.2 cr), Sonali Cable (1.2 cr), Mumbai 125KM (1.71 cr)  - all of these films released during the dull pre-Diwali days and failed to make any impact. The collections of all these films combined was less than Rs 6.5 crore.

And then came the most awaited release of the year – Shahrukh Khan’s ambitious Happy New Year also starring the most popular leading lady in the country Deepika Padukone. With an eye on box office records, Khan decided to release his film on the day after Diwali. The film took a earth-shattering opening at the box office and became the first film to collect more than 40 crore on its opening day. The first day business of Happy New Year was higher than the lifetime collections of several medium budget films released this year. The SRK starrer also went on to record the highest weekend collections, after which business came tumbling down. The drop on Monday was huge, and the film continued to fall during the weekdays. To put things into perspective, Happy New Year was leading Salman Khan’s Kick by Rs 25.01 crore after the first weekend, but eventually fell Rs 6.64 crore short of the first week business of Kick. Still, HNY had a huge first week of Rs 157.57 crore and added around 35.87 crore to its total in Week 2. The film will finish with lifetime collections of around 205 crore, which is lower than what you’d expect after a 44.97 cr opening day. Verdict – Super Hit.

In the overseas markets, Shahrukh Khan proved yet again why he is by far the biggest and most consistent star. Almost all his films make it to the Top 3 biggest opening overseas, and Happy New Year was no different. The film went past the lifetime overseas collections of Bang Bang (currently the second highest overseas grosser of 2014) in less than 10 days. Depending on how well it performs this weekend, Happy New Year could be the highest worldwide grosser of 2014. Overseas Verdict – Blockbuster.

A week after Happy New Year, two more films released in theatres. Super Nani marked the comeback of the legendary Rekha. The film proved to be a non-starter faring worse than a single-screen targeted film like Roar – The Tigers of the Sunderbans (Rs 7.78 cr) – which collected almost 3 times more than Super Nani (Rs 2.6 cr).

Note: Happy New Year is expected to collect Rs 205 crore, the film has collected around 195 cr so far.

It should remain the biggest unless the combined business of Aamir Khan’s PK and Ajay Devgn’s Action Jackson exceeds the 450 crore mark. With the best director in the industry in Rajkumar Hirani and arguably the most respected actor in Aamir Khan, who knows what PK can achieve on December 19?

  • @Indicine, You are still stuck at 25% gross when you have yourself said many times that tax increased…. Why??

Haider was nl doubt the bes followed by BB
…. HNY was gud one time entertainer…

PK alone may take the Domestic gross to 400Cr this Dec…

@HR Haters, Keep Burning…. Despite all the disadvantages BB has done decent business unlike some Crappy new year which is still being promoted…

  • @indicine: how can u say that bang bang is the most expensive film of the month. HNY cost is 150 cr while bang bang is 140.pla correcr

  • srk totally overshadow sunny deol in darr
Salman totally overshadow srk in Karan arjun
anil kapoor and Nana patekar totally overshadow akki in welcome
abhishek totally overshadow srk in hny.
abhay deol and farahan aktar totally overshadow hrithik in znmd.
believe it or not but true.

  • I have become fan of navin’s comment.. And i like specially the way he bashes chameleon —
    @arjun kapoor
Your talentless behind is still looking for fanny here- so sad that you spend your days trying to convince the shaukeen reject ie babaji that that fellow crop of talentless youngistan are worthy of his respect… Everyone knows you are more likely related to shakti kapoor than boney kapoor n how your talentless behind isnt even worthy of supporting roles in Kollywood so take your youngistan nonsense to a sarook article n praise lungi king you chameleon…

  • Akki’s Shakeens turns out to be another big flop. Akki continues his record of flops after flops. He should become a cook in a hotel or go from house to house asking for money.

  • hny deserves 1000 crore…he should got Oscar far better than lagaan, mother india , taare zameen par…I think if shaukeens didn’t release this fridayy then happy new year sure cross 300 crore in indiaa hahahah lol ….

  • lol ….HNY has sucked big time…still Indicine has not stopped promoting it…The world knows that Bang Bang was bigger hit than HNY. Here’s why:

Budget: HNY: 150 crores, Bang Bang: 140 crores. Still Indicine claims BB was most expensive…what a blind logic….HNY had advantage…
Holidays: Bang Bang had 3 holidays – Thursday (Gandhi Jayanthi), Friday (Dasara) & Monday(EID) & HNY had 3 holidays – Friday (Diwali), 2nd week Tuesday & Thursday….so both films had equal advantage.
Promotions: HNY did dancing overseas tours, excessive promotions in indian TV shows but BB promotions were quite dull. HNY had advantage…
Screens: HNY: 5000 screens in india, Bang Bang: 3400-4300 screens. HNY had advantage…
Clash: HNY was solo, BB clashed with critically acclaimed Haider. HNY had the advantage…
    Collections: BB: 182 crores, HNY – 203 crores expected…just 20 crores more than BB…

Now considering all above factors can any fool say HNY was bigger hit than Bang Bang…With all advantages it had, HNY should have collected more than 250 crores, but failed miserably…

Overall Bang Bang was far better than HNY…2nd biggest hit of year after Kick…

  • @nipun. Its apt that u are called a cry baby. Even audience have given proof that they liked happy New year more than Bong bong. U and Ur star are manipulation gods
Even boi is giving happy New year status.
And what about Ur manipulation s god film. Boi states it as 141 CRORES. That again about 40 CRORES. So its either flop or average in best case scenario. Rather than crying here ask Ur manipulation fans to go and watch his movie. Or else the day wouldn’t be far when manipulation god would do a manipulation of 100 CRORES. Lol

  • @babaji and nipun. If u start doing manipulations in excess of 35 CRORES obviously Ur second week would be huge. Lolz.
We ll say had happy New year got first 5 days holidays it would have crossed 250 CRORERs.
If s and buts don’t count.
Accept the fact that more people saw happy New year and liked it rather than bong bong

  • Bang Bang was the movie of the month! I have voted for Bang Bang! I am a fan of action films and comedies. Though BB had too many action scenes, I still prefer it over others!

  • Farah khan should be banned from directing movies…Jaya Baachan has criticized her own son’s movie…which can be meant that how stupid HNY would have been…Only Indicine has been saving HNY from getting boots with this logic less article…..

  • @Indicine, now, please conduct a poll on cricket if possible.
Who is better cricketer: Sachin Tendulkar vs Shah Rukh Khan??
    Desperate to see the results!

  • Now, irritating waste chameleon kapoor has officially become a more sarook fan because he always talks more about sarook. so, now, u r free to call him a sarook fan more than a youngistan fan.

  • It is Action Jackson vs Ungli this month!! Kill dill is a flop. it looks interesting only because of govinda’s laugh!

@nipun, well said, nice poll suggestions for indicine! for once, i agree to you with my heart and soul.

  • HNY is crap but our Heroes is a masterpiece.
Actually we r illiterates,we thought subash ghai is re-releasing his Hero film,so we did’nt went to watch it,hence it became a ATBB.

  • Two most hilarious comments by the rock-star of Indicine, @Bulli,
whom many sarook fans like Chulli, Goatya, Goatya Fan & Bulli vs Goatya, copy without giving credits like ther king plagiarize other films!

    During Bigg Boss Promo!
“Salman walks on a plane for Bigg Boss Promo. So, we want our king to walk on a missile for the promo of the Got Talent.”

    Salman meeting Modi!
“Salman meets Modi. So, we want our king to meet Obama and sweep the streets of Washington.”

See, for example, these two comments utmost hilarious and sarcastic without using offensive terms used by his clones or children mentioned above……

  • [TEEM DIAMONDS] in the place bringing haterzzz to their knees,yo bros need some burnol to apply down there, keep barking we keep rollin rollin

  • @triniman: try to respect others’ honest opinion. I know BangBang is flawed technically, but so is HNY too. And atleast, BangBang is a visual treat unlike HNY where the fighting scenes between the guards and Sonu sood reminds of a b-grade bhojpuri film.

  • @indicine: I am shocked at your statement! HNY is ambitious? ? From which angle? Plz stop posting senseless lines. The ambitious project of october was undoubtedly Haider and Roar to some extends.

  • HNY: 205 crores
    Bang Bang: 182 crores
Here I’m going to show how Bang Bang would have done better than HNY with diwali release.
    1. Clash affected 10% of bussiness as BangBang had less no. of shows per day, so without this effect it would have done 200 crores(including the collection of 10% )

2.critics,audience,celebrities,social sites, media’s appriciation and positive wom for Haider. Without this BangBang would have done another more 5% of collection. So total 210 crores

    3. Ticket prices are high for festive releases and people also love spending their money for these periods and that’s why these periods ensure very good openings. It would have affected business by 10%. So total 230 crores

    4. Pre-diwali effect(most dull period)had affected it by 5%,mostly in the 2nd and 3rd week. So total is 240 crores.

So people, BangBang would have done around 230 plus crores(and atleast 220 crores plus) if it had got a time like HNY..
HNY is doing 205 crores of lifetime figure with a weekend collection of 107-108 crores while Bang did a collection of 182 crores with a first 3 days collection of 74 crores and 4 days weekend of 96 crores. It shows that Bang Bang was still more liked and it would have done better with diwali.

PS: I didn’t include factors like negativity of bangBang as there were negativities for HNY also. Critics gave thumbs down to both. So i didn’t mention critics rating of bang bang.

  • I think every fan base and all readers of Indicine have started disliking every single comment of Arjun Kapoor. He is easily the most disliked member here… hehehe. Look at his comments. 27 dislikes 1 like (which could be himself liking LOL)

  • my vote of course for hny. bang bang is ok but haider is very bad movie. how it got critical some audience support in spite of poor content, poor screenplay?

  • footfalls of hny are obviously much higher than bang bang..about 1.45 crore people might have watched bb if we consider the average ticker price similar to dhoom 3 and for HNY it is 1.82 crores..
