New releases are shockingly poor, Independence Day Resurgence opens well

All the new Hindi releases this week were shockingly poor. Raman Raghav 2.0 and Junooniyat have started at less than 5% occupancy for the morning shows – with reports coming in that lots of shows have been cancelled in the morning due to ‘zero’ audience.

The three other releases – Shorgull, 7 Hours To Go, A Scandall – were complete washouts.

Meanwhile, ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ has opened well. The morning shows were around the 30% mark and some shows in the noon were running at 40-45% occupancy.

When a massive Hollywood film like ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ made on a budget of $165 million (Rs 1,120 crore) is released for the same ticket price as films like Raman Raghav 2.0 – which is also targeted at the multiplex audience – from an audience point-of-view, it isn’t a very difficult decision to make.

The problem, quite clearly, is the ticket price.

If smaller Hindi films need to sustain and do well, there needs to be a change in the way tickets are priced. But the high entertainment taxes, especially in major circuits for film business, has also become a major concern.

Film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi summed it up very well “2 years in a row – Big ticket Hollywood films have dominated the Hindi releases at large. Hindi film makers need to up their game & make a paradigm shift in production scale & project design to safeguard themselves for the future”

“Hollywood has decimated the regional (in the global context) cinema of a lot of countries. Thankfully, China & India still stand strong! Before we hit drastically low footfall levels, steps need to be taken by the production, distribution & exhibition sectors, working in sync!”

“A huge issue with the industry is the lack of a single association that represents ALL! Half a dozen out there, which only fight each other!”

“Infact, the uneven tax structure even within the sector hurts films! Average of 40% on cinema tickets. Almost NOTHING on the same films on TV!” Rathi said in a series of tweets.

A lot of people, including some in the trade, are dismissing the threat of Hollywood films – but with each passing week, the threat is only getting bigger. Even smaller Hollywood films are now taking bigger initials than low to medium budget Hindi films. Even critically acclaimed films are not working at the box office.

If this trend continues, a time could soon come when exhibitors will no longer be dependent on Hindi films to sustain their business. If that coincides with the decline in stardom of some of our major superstars, who have been the pillars of the industry for more than 2 decades, the Hindi film industry could struggle for its very existence.

  • @ Salman-Akshay Fan…..
Yes its true that normal Hollywood films do not work here, but the reason for panic is the market being created by the Hollywood franchise films. Marvel and DC comics together release close to 7-8 big films each year(thats close to no. of Bollywood biggies releasing in an year) and most are franchise films, this trend is going to continue. These franchise films are great advertisement of what Hollywood intends to offer in India. This ‘brand effect’ has already started to rub off on other Hollywood films. Small Hollywood films like The Conjuring 1 & 2 have outperformed Bollywood sex horror films in recent times. Deadpool started with 4+ cr opening, Doctor Strange and Suicide Squad are poised to open good. They are good at choosing release dates which helps in maximizing their business at ticket window.
Hollywood knows the potential market India can provide to them, thats why today we have Indian stars being picked in Hollywood films(Priyanka and Deepika in lead role). Deepika opposite Vin Diesel, after Furious 7 did more than 100 cr business in India is not some coincidence or luck but a well thought strategy. Irfan Khan has already earned name for himself in the west, did Jurassic Park which also did well in India. The Jungle Book has proven if there is some Indian context than what business is possible. Just like you see a Chinese character or locations in big Hollywood films(as China is a huge market for them), same tactics are being used by Hollywood production houses to tap into Indian market, use local flavors to woo the audience.

Personally I would love to see such competition on Indian television media. Indian tv serials are hopeless, and they are degrading more and more with time, Naagin, Makkhi and what not. In contrast a lot of good films are being attempted in Bollywood today which are relevant, fresh and entertaining. Though they are not earning huge at the boxoffice but with time ‘trust’ factor will develop.

  • What a superb article… absolutely loved reading the entire thing…but I feel we have a very good line up in the next half of the year which can literally create havoc at the box office..If all goes well, get ready for some fireworks which Sultan should start and Dangal should end..

  • Hollywood will continue dominate over Hindi Cinema until Some EDX believers will not stop believing EDX

Hollywood blocks those days where there are no big films starring Superstars. Hollywood leave EDX for Khans because they know Khans or Hindi Cinema are/is nothing without EDX holidays since a decade.

If khans too blocks other day then we gets more successful films than present and KHANS need to come up with at good films too than craps films on EDX (successful only because EDX holidays) and if that happens we will get more or 3 more good films than Hindi Cinema produced great films outside EDX

    empty dates outside EDX holidays.

Only 3 Superstars ( HRITHIK ROSHAN, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan) who guards Hindi Cinema from Hollywood by blocking Non-EDX and KHANS are destroying Hindi Cinema by making craps films and making them successful only by blocking EDX holidays.

This is the only reason why Hollywood overtaking Hindi Cinema. Media gives hype to Khans for their success but never criticised them by considering them EDX STARS and also Flop stars outside EDX like we all know the results of Salman’s Jai Ho on Republic Day, Aamir’s Talaash on Normal Day and Srk’s Fan on Ram Nawami without EDX

  • @mekanik:

But Bhai’s all those craps (acc to u) collected much more than your bhagoda’s all the so called classics. That’s the difference between MEGASTARDOM and tinystardom!!!

  • @Uj shut up moron. What was salman before 2010? 404 error. LOL. He is just lucky that currently Masala entertainers formula is popular since 2010 that’s why he is able to exist in the industry. Don’t worry, his craps link kick or ready won’t work at all anymore. Very soon he will come back to his real aukaat.

  • @sss,well said bro.
Big films like avatar 2 can cross 350 to 400 crore. When a movie like jungle book can cross 180 crore in India with a strong content then a movie like avatar can double jungle book’s collections because avatar 2 is really big film and it is the most anticipated movie of all time !!!!!
Piracy and the typicality of the movies will kill the chances of doing well or recovering costs …
Bollywood doesn’t offer much . The same stupid love story with 4 to 5 songs in every film . While Hollywood offers much more
Top notch vfx and content .
I had once said the time will come when Hollywood movies do 300 to 500 crore and bollywood films fail to cross 200 Crore !!!

  • @sss – well pls continue to prove you ate biggest moron co u continue praise useless srk – tum logo ki vajah Sa hi Bollywood ja fan ka standard bicha jata hai

    Too much fun

  • @Rafuuru Has, yes I agree with you,I would also love to see more competition based on content on television. Also,as far as the marvel and DC films are concerned, Marvel has a strong brand value in India, but dc’s image has greatly been shaken thanks to man of steel and Batman vs Superman. It will be interesting to see how the future of the Justice league in the dcmu spans out from here cos if suicide squad falls below expectations, then their markets will slowly but surely drop.A lot of Hollywood’s base in Bollywood depends on DC’s films performance in the future.Indian horror ilhas sunk to new levels of mediocrityLet’s wait and watch, this is going to be one interesting journey!

  • @khalid zaman
sultan, kick, bodyguard, dabangg, house full, and other mindless masala movies will be made till the public like these kind of movies and these movies earn to their potential. If these craps(according to you) won’t be made Bollywood will go more in loss.
What do you want? Shall movies like fan, Bombay velvet, waiting etc should be made??
People go to theatres for entertainment. Its simple ”supplies will be according to demands”. Not for intellectuals like you who shout on the name of creativity and then themselves don’t go to theatres.
Even your favourite star’s biggest hit is CE which was masala movie but provided wholesome entertainment.

  • @indicine… Point taken to an extent. But are you not adding to this situation…
Although it may not make a difference but you haven’t rated any of the Movies today. Why?
If you can rate some movies on even Thursdays or atleast Friday mornings, why can’t you rate even one of small budget movies even till Friday night?

  • Reducing ticket prices is not a solution, people will always prefer 100 rs Independence day over a 50 rs RamanRaghav 2.0 simply because of theatre experience. Forget Bollywood film, even a critically acclaimed Hollywood film like The King’s speech cannot compete with big budget Hollywood films. You cannot reduce the ticket price beyond a recovery threshold, footfalls will increase but there would be no significant rise in business for small films. Bollywood films are also suffering from class system like the Indian society , big films are getting bigger(200 to 300 cr) and small films are finding it tough against big Bollywood and Hollywood films, and now regional films are also affecting them.
Especially Marathi films and Punjabi films, which are eating into business of Bollywood films in major territories like Mumbai and East Punjab. A good Marathi film made at a paltry budget of 5cr has a market in Maharashtra alone to gross more than 50cr, whereas all the Bollywood films released this week won’t clock 20cr in total, though released all over North India.
This shows how the market for Bollywood is shrinking in India due to Hollywood as well as regional cinemas. So Bollywood films have to fight with big Hollywood films with big budgeted movies of their own and outperform regional films with high concept(relevant) films. And its not an easy fight to fight. The only option to survive is to win.
Big scale movies will always earn more, therefore Bollywood has to increase the production values. And that leads to recovery problem as Bollywood doesn’t have big market like the Hollywood films has. The blunder Bollywood has made is that it never tried to expand its market. Yes, China and other territories are being added but how many Bollywood movies can actually get a release there and create an audience for Bollywood films. PK did well in China as it offered a look at India’s religious beliefs. Something which has fascinated people world over, how a country of billion people with so much diversity prospers economically. 3idiots did well in China as Indian and Chinese education syatems are similar and also parenting norms are quite similar. For Chinese students and parents 3Idiots was releatable and thus it worked. 3Idiots was released in 2009 and PK in 2014, a five year gap is too big a gap to create any kind of audience in China for Bollywood films. Films like Dhoom 3, HNY, SIB, Sultan will be only watched by NRI’s and South Asian audience. Now Bajirao Mastani is being released in China, which offers a look at Indian history(though bogus).
So message is clear for Bollywood filmakers to make films which intrigues the International audience about India. Create a market for Indian films in other countries so that a big budget Bollywood film has market to not only recover the costs but also earn huge boost the Bollywood economics.

    @Salman-Akshay Fan…
Yes DC comics has suffered in last 4-5 years but they are too big a production house to be out of the race for too long. Though they are not able to give big Blockbuster films but still recovery is no issue for them, it takes only one good film to arrest the slump. Lets see what future holds for Bollywood films.

  • @Phultan-LoL, Lallutard talking about crap films?!! Everyone knows Lallu gives the worst shitty movies. And if being the ‘biggest moviestar in the world’ is equal to being flopstar then we are happy with SRK being that. You be happy with the shittiest films which no one will remember in the coming generation whereas SRK will be remembered as a legendary actor come the “biggest moviestar in the world”.

  • There is no unity in bollywood…..!. Big actor ..does not support .small actor…
As well as …if u take salman khan and aamir khan and srk khan in one movie ….so everyone want to be lead actor ..on this movie…koi kisi se kam nhi h
In hollywood …all actor are equal…which is why …marvel disney ..earn money more then bollywood movie except few big actor…like jungle book at that time is top No 1 postion…. i also don’t understand ..why bollywood film maker make movie like raman raghav ..sorgull..scandel type of movie nobody want to watch in big screen even in laptop ya pc..!!
