National Award for Amitabh Bachchan

Nearly 2 years after the controversial 53rd National Award (2005), Amitabh Bachchan was awarded the National Award for the Best Actor for his brilliant performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black.

Bengali film Kaalpurush directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta was declared the best feature film for 2005 while Hindi film Parineeta directed by Prodip Sarkar was adjudged Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director.

The National Awards were not announced due to string of controversies. Kolkata based film critic Shyamli Banerjee had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court levelling charges of corruption, fixing and pressure on the members of the jury by the Directorate of the Film Festivals (DFF) in deciding the 53rd Awards. She also said that Black or it’s actors in the film should not get the National Award as the movie is an adaptation of the film The Miracle Worker and according to the rules no adaptations can be given awards.
