Mohenjo Daro Review

Hrithik Roshan is known as one of the most hardworking actors in the industry. But he does very few films which shows he is picky about his choices. What else can explain so few movies since he made his debut in 2000? In Mohenjo Daro he has teamed up with his Jodhaa Akbar director Ashutosh Gowariker once again. They created magic back in 2008, can they recreate the same magic 8 years later? The insipid promos have kept the buzz very low and the choice of someone like Pooja Hegde hasn’t exactly made people crazy. Without even talking about the clash with Rustom, let’s get to the movie. Does Mohenjo Daro work as a movie? Time to find out.

Story: Set amid the ancient Indus Valley civilization circa 2016 B.C.E, an indigo farmer from Amri, Sindh named Sarman (Hrithik Roshan) travels upriver to the largest city, Mohenjo-daro, where during a street mishap he saves the life of a beautiful woman named Chaani (Pooja Hegde) who as “The Chosen One” in service to Sindhu Ma, the goddess of the river which is the centre of their culture, is “the symbol of Mother Sindhu’s grace and blessing.” But Sarman soon falls afoul of the politician Maham (Kabir Bedi) and his son Moonja (Arunoday Singh) who are seizing power and starting to rule Mohenjo Daro as an empire. To win Chaani, Sarman must defeat Maham and rouse the people to save their city.

Mohenjo Daro Review: First things first, Mohenjo Daro is not a historical drama or a historical romance. It is a love story which happens to be a fantasy and has the setting of the Indus valley civilization as its background. Ashutosh Gowariker does a neat job of placing the love story in that era but the movie doesn’t quite come together in the end. It all feels a bit disjointed where we get to see snippets of life from that era for a few scenes and then a cheesy love story for the next few scenes and the cycle continues. There’s also the terrible visual effects work in the climax. How did Gowariker allow it to appear in the final movie? It is painful to see that Gowariker has forgotten to make his brand of epic sagas after Jodha Akbar. Mohenjo Daro lacks the deft touch of a Swades or a Lagaan.

Mohenjo Daro Movie Review

Mohenjo Daro Movie Review

We don’t want to play historical critics and we are not going to comment about the historical accuracies or inaccuracies. The editing of Mohenjo Daro is snappier than Gowariker’s past movies but it still ends up being about 10-15 mins too long. The production design and costume design all look huge in scale and the crocodile scene doesn’t have the same impact as the makers intended. The visual effects of Mohenjo Daro is one of the main drawbacks of the movie. It is just too shabby. What were the makers thinking allowing this to be in the final version? Even Indian cartoon network shows have better visual effects. The music of Mohenjo Daro, even if it is by AR Rahman, is not noteworthy. A younger music director could have infused fresher tones into the movie.

Acting: Hrithik Roshan is a good actor, we all know that. But why then does he keep choosing movies which don’t give his acting range the full potential? He is fine in Mohenjo Daro and is perfect as someone who would resemble Hrithik Roshan in 2016 BCE. He acts, and fights and even dances like only he can. Pooja Hegde is unfortunately a disappointment. She feels miscast for the role even though she seems talented. She is expressive, considering this is her debut movie. Kabir Bedi is menacing and is perfectly cast as the main antagonist. Arunoday Singh looks the part but doesn’t act the part.

Conclusion: Mohenjo Daro feels like a big let off because it rues the scale that it tries to showcase. A movie based in the Indus valley civilization definitely deserved to be more fully thought out, but Mohenjo Daro comes across as a plain love story. Don’t go in as a history professor, but go in as a casual audience member who is getting to see cool sets and naturally lit studios dressed up as Mohenjo Daro.

Mohenjo Daro is far from a bad film, it is in fact a good film but we can’t help but feel sad about the fact that it could have been a huge Magnum Opus. That leaves a sour taste. If you go in expecting nothing, then you might even love Mohenjo Daro. For what it’s worth, the movie could be watched once.

  • The era it tries to showcase
  • Grand scale showing through cinematography and production design
  • Hrithik Roshan is in his usual good form
  • The movie starts off very well

  • It descends into a predictable love story which could have been set in any time period
  • Pooja Hegde is miscast
  • The music is disappointing
  • The visual effects are downright terrible

Rating: ★★½☆☆

  • There were alot of expectations considering Hrithik refused alot of projects for this film, and he is coming back after 2yrs.
Baahubali and Bajrao Mastani have set the standards for a good Historical film very high.Watching it tomorrow.

  • highly enjoyed..this is called real epic….movielovers ko really pasand ayegi..i think, length thora jyada hota toh aur v a6a hota..

  • I already knew that this is not a good movie. It was looking boring from its songs already. Watching Rustom on 15th August at 6 pm. Now where is EDX POWER NOT KHANS, and DESTROYER OF KHANS? Hrithik is only because of manipulation. If first day crosses 15 crore mark, then ensure that Jadoo calculator has again manipulated

  • Looks like reviewers re out of their mind.

Film was absolutely fantastic. I am a Hrithik fan but even if it was a non-hrithik movie, I would have loved it.

You have seen single screen audience going crazy but even the audience in PVR cinemas were crazy for the scenes. The Crocodile scene was among the best and you say it was not good.

The ending might have looked a bit bad in terms if graphics but the film was a masterpiece. The only negative thing about the movie is Pooja Hegde. She wasn’t so good. Everything else is perfcet. Screenplay, Music, Background score and acting. Top Notch.

The fight scenes and ending gave goosebumps. You need to confirm if you were high while watching the film.

My rating is 5/5… #Mohenjodaro is Epic

  • I alwayz feel that indicine is partial towards some stars because even for worst movies like Hny,dilwale and many more srk movies they simply gave 4ratings…. If the movie is bad then whichever star may b acting we should give it less rating…but for some stars it will alwayzz give more than required…iam sure they will give 4rating2 crap ADHM even if it is bad and for Shivaay they will give below 4

  • Mohenjo daro has get highly negative reviews all over. I think it will be flop.

My brother also hasn’t liked it. He just come home by watching it. He says that movie is very boring and historically inaccurate.

  • I dont believe in @indicine review. most of the time dey seem biased but Mohenjodaro reviews r mostly average. So sad.

  • I predicted couple of weeks back that this film will find it tough to cross 100 crores… Seems it won’t reach there.

  • @Anand,Srk getting stopped at US airport is no joke. ,its a serious issue. dont comment anything just bcoz u hate Srk.

  • Even Indian cartoon network shows have better visual effects.
This is enough to insult a movie and telling how bad it is .

  • Couldn’t disagree anymore with this review. I’m genuinely doubting the authenticity of this review.

Love story a minus point? Did you possibly expect it to not have a love story/romance at all? After watching trailer, promos, songs? 24 out of 25 highest grossing Indian movies have love stories in them. It does not even take center stage of movie, and the focus completely shifts away to MohenjoDaro city & Sarman’s past in 2nd half. Is showing love story in movies a crime? It was beautifully done without dragging it. How is it a plain love story? Please explain without any diplomacy.

Pooja Hegde a miscast? I was little skeptical about her when she was announced for role, but I don’t think anyone can say her a miscast after watching the movie.
    1. She looked beautiful throughout.
    2. She had great chemistry with Hrithik.
    3. Her acting was very good for a debutante, never felt like it was her debut. She had perfect body language and she absolutely nailed her character.

Music is disappointing? This is most shocking thing written in the article. Almost everyone in the cinema hall loved the music, especially captivating background score. It was strongest part of the movie. AR Rahman is definitely winning awards for it. You have to hear it in theatre to believe it, it’s just amazing from start to finish.

Terrible VFX? It was used only in 2 scenes. How is it a negative? And calling it terrible would be extremely harsh. Both crocodile and climax scene are very well done. VFX in both scenes was good. Much better Bollywood standard. If you (reviewer) found it terrible, then you must have found some of VFX in Baahubali (like bull fight scene) absolutely unwatchable.

Audience clapped in the end after watching it at South Avenue Mall, especially after watching the climax, which you called ‘terrible’ indirectly.

I’m extremely disappointed and shocked by this review and I can smell the ‘anti MohenjoDaro’ propaganda.

  • after interval movie picked very well.Ending Visual effects Outstanding.Hritik acts well.Pooja hegde miscast as indicine said.Yes story is predictable.Music is big letdown.Pace is Slow.
    My rating 2star

  • Hrithik has delivered his career best performance. Nails the character proves only he could have played such a character! 5/5 #MohenjoDaro

  • Mohenjo-Daro got 2.5* .. akkhi fans super happy they said indicine rocksssss perfect review…
Now indicine give 2* on Rustom and now the turned up and saying that indicine vogus don’t know how to give review. Ha ha ha.

  • i think@indicine review is the most popular joke of the dissapointing, visual effects letdown..llooll..

  • thats the risk of doing one film in 2 years…..hope hritik lears his lesson…….this formula has only worked for aamir as aamir has very good script sense…..

  • Watched the movie today afternoon and it was a good experience. The movie starts with crocodile scene where Hrithik kills crocodile, then his journey to Mohenjodaro and passes on to his romantic story with pooja. The first half is good with some drama and 2 songs . The 2nd half of the movie takes this movie to a different level with excellent action scenes and gripping script without any songs. Music is also good. Overall, it was a good film to watch out during this weekend.

    1) Hrithik steals the show and his hard work pays off.
    2) 2nd Half action scenes are awsome.
    3) Historical mood was very well set.

    1) VFX – Graphics could have been better.
    2) Pooja is not eye catchy.

I would go for a 3.5/5 stars for MD.

  • 2 saal ki mehnat and only 2.5 ratings ? Where is Kritik @Nipun ? I wonder how many stars he will give to this movie ? Also need to check @nipun’s mentors like Anupama Chopra and Rajeev Masand’s ratings. Audience verdict is full and final. Collections by Monday will reveal the fate of the movie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Watched Rustom Today…

    Want to say one thing…

Akshay, You are the darling of the nation and Tumhare liye ye craze and love and support kabhi kam nahi hoga…
