Last Flop Of Bollywood Actors: February 2017

Consistency and frequency (of releases) is of utmost importance in the industry. Achieving those two things means an actor is able to release 1 – 2 or more films every year and yet bring audience to theatres.

Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are the top guys here, even though Salman is way ahead simply because we was able to get nearly 9 crore people to theatres during the 12-month period when ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan – Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – Sultan’ released in theatres and all films combined collected more than 800 crore at the domestic box office.

Aamir doesn’t quite have the frequency of releases, but he more than makes up for it with one film that not only manages to win over the audience, but also the critics. It’s probably worth the long wait too because most Aamir films are classics that can be watched and enjoyed by the future generation, decades from now.

Check out the list of actors who have remained the most consistent for the longest period of time – without delivering a single outright flop at the box office.

Note: Only stars who are in the reckoning as bankable solo stars have been included in the list. Saif Ali Khan, Aditya Roy Kapur, John Abraham, Abhishek Bachchan and a few other miss out simply because they no longer command an initial.

1. Aamir Khan (17 years ago, Mela in January 2000) – It’s difficult to describe a phenomenon like Aamir Khan. More than the staggering collections of his films, what stands out is the consistency in quality. Aamir’s last flop was more than 17 years ago when Mela released in theatres and in that period he hasn’t given too many ‘bad’ films. Mangal Pandey didn’t do too well at the box office, but managed to recover its investment due to the bumper opening that it took. While many consider ‘Dhobi Ghat’ to be a failure, the film was profitable for its makers as it did reasonably well in India and performed very well overseas. It didn’t really belong to the commercial space either. ‘Talaash’ was the other Aamir Khan under-performer, but even that film got to a reasonably decent total for its genre and year of release (2012). Those three films apart, the most dependable superstar in the industry holds the record for the most number of all time blockbuster – Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3, PK and Dangal. He also has other major grossers like Lagaan, Fanaa, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par. Quality films, box office opening, all-time highest grossers – Aamir is doing it all. During times when most careers don’t last half a decade, Aamir hasn’t faced outright rejection in the last 17 years!

2. Salman Khan (7 years ago, London Dreams in October 2009) – Back in those days in the mid-2000s when his films weren’t even getting a initial at the box office, even Salman himself wouldn’t have thought of reaching the heights that he has achieved in the last 7-8 years. Govinda had an interesting story to tell in one of his interviews recently, he said “I remember when Dabangg was about to release, the producers said it looked like a Bhojpuri film. They said they cannot put Rs 9 crore, they will put in Rs 5 crores. Salimsaab (Salman’s father) had to put Rs 4-5 crore more. Then the Dabangg song became a hit, but they called that also a Bhojupri song. Then Dabangg became Dabangg”. Those lines tell the story of a mass-superstar, who was always one of the most loved stars in the industry, but wasn’t doing films that appealed to his core fanbase. That core fan-base of Salman in smaller cities, towns and villages is several times bigger than the fan-following of any other star in the industry. While Dabangg was struggling to get finance of 4-5 crore less than a decade ago, the same star commands nearly 12 times just for the satellite rights of his films. Dabangg, however, was just the beginning of a spectacular run which has a huge list of blockbusters – Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2, Kick, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan. Even a 200 crore grosser like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo looks like an under-performer when compared to his other films in recent times. Such is his stardom. The incredible run also includes 10 consecutive 100 crore grossers.

3. Varun Dhawan (No Flops in 4 years) – Varun who made his debut in ‘Student Of The Year’ doesn’t yet have a failure against his name. He completes 5 years in the industry this year and if both his 2017 films work, it’ll be arguably the best career-start the industry has ever seen. So far, all his films have been successful – Main Tera Hero (Hit), Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (Super Hit), Badlapur (Hit), ABCD 2 (Super Hit), Dilwale (Semi Hit) and Dishoom (Above Average). More importantly, all his films have opened well too.

4. Arjun Kapoor (2 year ago, Tevar in January 2015) – After the failure of ‘Tevar’, Arjun returned last year with ‘Ki and Ka’ a film that opened above-expectations and went on to post a good lifetime total. He has a big film like ‘Half Girlfriend’ lined up for release, followed by ‘Mubarakan’ in the second half of 2017.

5. Sushant Singh Rajput (2 years ago, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi in April 2015): After the mega-debacle of Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, Sushant Singh Rajput has made a strong comeback with MS Dhoni The Untold Story. It’s about continuing the good work with ‘Raabta’ which is scheduled to hit theatres later this year. It’s also time to work hard, the PR games need to stop too. You can’t win Filmfare Awards or become the next Shah Rukh Khan through fake social media QnA’s and trying to portray a positive image through the media.

6. Akshay Kumar (2 years ago, Brothers in August 2015) – The rise after the failure of Brothers has made Akshay Kumar one of the most consistent stars in the industry. Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom, Jolly LLB 2 have all been successful. What he now needs though is films to open bigger and put up bigger lifetime totals. For the number of films that he does every year, even if one or two of them go on to touch the 150 crore mark – he would be a serious contender for the third spot.

7. Shahid Kapoor (1 year ago, Shaandaar in October 2015) - Udta Punjab was a moderate success, but the important film for Shahid is going to be ‘Rangoon’ which releases in theatres this week. His choice of films has let him down, inspite of having all the talent that’s needed to become a quintessential Bollywood star. Currently, he isn’t even competing with actors who made their debuts a decade after him.

8. Ranbir Kapoor (1 year ago, Tamasha in November 2015) – Ranbir looked unstoppable after back-to-back successes in Rockstar, Barfi and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Then came Besharam from the director of Salman Khan’s Dabangg. It took a huge start at the box office recording nearly 20 cr on its opening day, but the crash was equally big. He followed it up with films like Roy, Tamasha and Bombay Velvet – the latter was the biggest loss-making film of all time. The success of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has put him back on track, with a big film like Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanjay Dutt biopic to look forward to.

9. Shah Rukh Khan (10 months ago, Fan in April 2016) – A superstar who deserves to be much higher up the list, simply because when it comes to consistency, he has always been ahead of everyone else in the industry. Unfortunately, even though the initial star-power remains as strong has it has ever been – his films are simply not performing after the first weekend. Happy New Year, Dilwale, Fan and Raees have all shown major drops after a very good weekend. This means, the neutral section of the audience isn’t coming to watch his films and for this to change, the quality of films has to improve. It’s still about that one big film, which could either be Imtiaz Ali or Aanand L Rai’s next. Food for thought: 3 Idiots, Robot (Tamil film), Bajrangi Bhaijaan were all first offered to SRK and he rejected the first two films for Ra One. Where would he be if he had opted to do those films?

10. Hrithik Roshan (6 months ago, Mohenjo Daro in August 2016) – It’s no secret now that Hrithik is going through a tough time. The concern lies in the level at which his films are opening and the weakness doesn’t actually lie in the box-office pull, but the quality of promos. However, even his rejected films like Mohenjo Daro managed to get to 60 crore and Kaabil inspite of being a small film managed to get to push itself through to 100 crore, inspite of clash. The number of films that he does has to increase.

11. Sidharth Malhotra (5 months back, Baar Baar Dekho in September 2016) – He began 2016 with a solid hit in the form of ‘Kapoor & Sons’, but his second film ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ inspite of having chartbuster music was rejected. He has ‘Reload’ and ‘Ittefaq’ in the second half of 2017.

12. Tiger Shroff (6 months ago, A Flying Jatt in August 2016): He began his career well with films like ‘Heropanti’ and ‘Baaghi’. But his last film ‘A Flying Jatt’ tanked at the box office. He returns with the director of his first two films, Shabbir Khan, for their third outing together in ‘Munna Michael’. But what sustains actors in the industry over a long period of time is variety in roles and films. It’s going to be even more important for Tiger, because most of his films have been in the same action space.

13. Emraan Hashmi (5 months ago, Raaz Reboot in September 2016) – Absolutely nothing seems to be working for Emraan Hashmi after he returned to doing films that made him successful in the first half of his career. The return to the Bhatt camp as well as doing the 4th film the Raaz franchise, have failed. He has a big film like ‘Baadshaho’ with the same team that made ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’.

14. Ajay Devgan (4 months ago, Shivaay in October 2016) - Shivaay was the bigger film in the clash against Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, it was expected to be a universal success as the first trailer had received a very good response. However, both the opening and trend were poor as distributors lost money over Shivaay.

15. Ranveer Singh (3 months ago, Befikre in December 2016) – Ranveer rose to be one of the promising young stars in the industry after the humongous success of ‘Bajirao Mastani’, a film that won him both awards and box office rewards. Unfortunately, the euphoria was short-lived as Aditya Chopra’s first directorial in 7 years, Befikre, was rejected by the audience.

From now onwards, this page will be updated every month.

  • if dhobi ghaat would have collected 200cr..indicine would have called it aamir’s movie. if aamir was not lead actor in that movie then who was lead actor? even aamir had same length role in 3idiots as dhobi ghaat. talaash and mangal pandey were flops. stop being biased to khans. billo barber was also srk movie. he was in all songs

  • BKD is routine rom com crap with same overloaded Baadshah raps n copied music in Kjo style.. ONLY IDIOTS PAY TO WATCH SUCH FILMS.

    it will FLOP big time.

Half Girlfriend will be a massive flop… Shraddha Kapoor has lot her charm.. And poor actor like Arjun kapoor does not have any following..

BAADSHAHO will be a big success .. And Emraan Hashmi will make a comeback in top 10.

  • Wtf!!!! Aamir last flop was way back in 2000 thats surprising and amazing
Akshay is on a roll…. Though his next 2 films r not much exciting but can’t doubt his script sense now a days
    Bhai is on another level
Srk and hrithik r going through a tough phase ..
Specially hrithik he even has not announced his next film yet that’s really frustrating now… I think he is preparing for the role as he is on a secret place and have grown beard that he usually don’t but he shd announce his fans r waiting badly….
    .
Kaabil was a success though it’s not able to get a hit tag coz of way of distribution by producer but doing 100 cr in a clash with Srk’s massy movie which was carrying an incredible buzz from last 2 years is not a small deal ?
He just need one solo release ,he will show u wht he is capable of
His KAABIL doesn’t open coz it was a clash with massy movie like Raees otherwise it would easily do 14-15 cr on opening day
Promos were not bad but Raees was the first choice due to its trailer appeal and Dialogues and ofcourse srk in a massy movie after a long time
Want a bang bang kind of stuff from HR now hope he will do FIGHTER next

  • By looking at akshays movies budget and Non holiday release Date most of his movies opens very good .

Look at opening of hrithik on non holiday date.. Lol ..MJD & KAABIL:8, GUZARISH ;3 ZNMD;7 ..still indicine will raise question on akshays movies openings which gets 13-15 all the time . basically they Are haters of akshay and trys to prove That his movies r working because of WOM ..lol .

Rustom & H3..both had mixed WOM still easily 100+ … Even jolly llb2 hasn’t get that type of positive WOM Still 100+ ..power of akshay kumar..

  • This is the Same double standard Indicine who said that kaabil Promos r good & mJd trailer was also good according to them..but botj movies didn’t got good opening so they have started calling hrithik movies promos Bad… Lol lol lol ..big Lol

  • This is what BOI said About Akshay’s stardom…@Neeraj@Aisha especially do read …Aisha is also a devotee of BOI I guess…

‘The gap in stardom is no way that much between the Khan and Akshay Kumar but the problem is limited appeal films for Akshay Kumar and nothing like a Rowdy Rathore or Welcome’

I hope indicine also gets this point ..he is not doing 150CR type movies …if he will get a Big entertainer on long weekend than easily be will do 150+ .

  • Great stuff . There is no doubt that this decade has been dominated by Salman and Aamir . Unless Salman and Aamir will have a non holiday release date I don’t see this list changing for them . SRK is going through a tough time both in terms of content and box office . Hrithik is looking shaky after BB because MD was a massive failure and Kaabil was an underperformer in terms of opening . His next films might change the equation . Akshay has turned the tables after the failure of Brothers . He is going through a purple patch and all looks good with TEPK and 2.0 . Ajay has been pretty up and down in the 2nd half of this decade . This decade started with OUATIM, Raajneeti, G3, Singham, Bol Bachchan and SOS . Himmatwala, AJ and Satyagraha were failures . He needs a big hit like SR because he still commands a following in mass dominated areas . Shivaay should have been a massive hit . Baadshaho and G4 can bring him back on track . Ranbir got success with ADHM but JJ and Dutt will be extremely important for him . JJ has been delayed for the last 3 or 4 years . Dutt is expected to clash with TZH on Christmas this year which will not be easy . Ranveer’s career has been like a pendulum where he gives 1 Hit and then 1 failure . KD followed Gunday, LVRB followed BBB and Befikre followed BM . He has a great track record with SLB and DP . Bhansali brings out the best in terms of acting . Padmavati will be a huge challenge for him to justify the character of Alauddin Khilji and now because of the recent controversy everything needs to be done properly . I don’t like Varun but I can’t deny he has not done anything wrong in terms of Box office till now . He still has a 100 % success ratio with 7 films and unless something goes horribly wrong this streak will continue with BKD and Judwaa 2 . Sid has done very few films so this year is important for him with Reload and Ittefaaq . Arjun has a great chance this year to give 2 consecutive hits with HG and Mubarakan . Shahid’s career has been quite ordinary in terms of Box Office because of wrong choices . He showed his talent in Udta Punjab and now Rangoon is an important film for him because he has a great equation with VB . Padmavati is a big film for him as an actor and a star . Although he will not get the entire credit but if it becomes a massive success all of them will be appreciated . Emraan is going through a nightmare . 9 back to back failures in the last 4 years is just not accepted . Baadshaho can bring him back although he is playing a second lead to AD he still needs a Hit and it doesn’t matter whether it comes as a solo lead or in a multi starrer . Sushant impressed one and all in MSD . Raabta will be important for him in terms of opening and content . He has done only 4 films so needs to do more films to make a huge impact . Last but not the least Tiger has made a solid start to his career with Heropanti and Baaghi . Both these films have made their mark in mass dominated areas . Although his dialogue delivery is terrible public like him for his dancing and action . He is working with Sabbir Khan for the 3rd time . They have 100 % success with each other . Baaghi and A Flying Jatt also got very high trp last year . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Splendid!Loved the article @indicine,u have done a good job! But, don’t disgrace urself by adding this Nakaabil Hrithik Roshan! He is good for nothing! BTW,Plz make another article on last solo (non holiday & non franchise) Hit of all respective bollywood actors!Just wanna see where this nakaabil stands!!!
    #Just asking
    #Shame

  • Indicine if Aamir have 5 ATBB then Salman also have 5 ATBB (MPK, HAHK, Dabangg, BB, Sultan), and here I am not including KKHH and also ETT which you earlier mention ATBB but later (after 2 year suddenly, that too without giving any reason) change it to Blockbuster……

So please don’t say that Aamir is the only actor who holds most number of ATBB, Salman also have same number of ATBB and much more Blockbusters…..

  • if you remove fan from srks career and then try to find a flop movie then you might have in 1990 to find a flop thats srk for you he would have topped the list if fan would have not flopped

  • talking about consistency no one comes ahead of srk success rate of 90% in 1990-2010 even now success rate of 70% in his bad phase too

  • As far as consistency is considered, the 3 Khans have been far ahead of the others. One flop like Fan won’t change anything for SRK! After them it was Hrithik until 2014. From Dhoom 2/Krrish to Bang Bang, he had maintained a very good pace. He should just do more movies. After Hrithik it’s Akshay, during his peak (mid-2006 to 2008), his consistency was excellent. Even now he is going very good. But I feel he must do more widely appealing movies to get better. Ajay Devgn as a top star hasn’t been inconsistent for a long time. I fail to understand why this happens to a god-gifted actor like him. Varun Dhawan is excellent. Ranbir has a big test in the form of JJ and Dutt biopic. JJ is already considered a flop whereas meeting expectations in the Dutt biopic is going to be the biggest challenge of his career. Ranveer hadn’t scored a single hit since BBB without the Bhansali-Deepika combination. Even now a failure like Befikre he reunites with the same team! Shahid is one of the most inconsistent actors of the industry. High time for choice of scripts to improve.

  • Instead of Ranbir Kapoor Ranvir Singh should have been casted in the Dutt biopic.Ranbir is talantless and flop.Apni Behen Kareena ke paison par gii raha hai.Aur Katrina ki bhiik par.

  • Very good article and something new to read.

I also suggest Indicine to publish no of successful movie and flops movie to all male star of Bollywood.

Including % percentage of Hit and Flops movie….

Best of luck for this new attempt Indicine. ..

  • A big star is not just about fan following. It is about fan following as well as audience. One must have well balance of both. Salman and Aamir are way ahead at the moment.
While Aamir doesn’t really have fan following comparable to Salman or Srk but his audience is huge. Though only audience is not enough to do that good at box office because it takes only 2/3 bad films to loose audience but that is where Aamir is doing best. He is providing more than expectations to his audience.
Talking about Salman he has the best combination of both. He has huge fan following and huge audience too. His films need to receive only mixed to positive responce to collect huge for which other stars need no less than a very good or an excellent film.
Srk has fan following only 2nd to Salman and much bigger than any other star but he doesn’t have
the audience. He lost it with back to back bad films and I think it is too let for him now.
Akshay also has good combination of both but what he his failing to do is to make a film that appeals both to his audience and his fan base.
Hrithik also has a good combination of both but his choices of films are letting him down. It is hard to believe some put so much time and effort on a film like Mohenjo Daro. Kaabil was a decent choice but shouldn’t have clashed. But despite clashing with bigger film and with dull and dark promos it managed to do almost 100 cr. which is big achievement as well as a proof of Hrithik’s stardom.

  • Sad to know SRK rejected these films:
    1. 3 idiots
It would have made his association with Raju Hirani and PK, 3 idiots sequel would have been his.

    2. Ek tha tiger:
It would have made his association with Kabir Khan and BB, Tubelight would have been his.

    3. Robot
Robot 2.O would have been his

    4. Wanted
He would be a rage among masses.

    But its destiny after all:
Lets look at SRK’s first four major hits
    1. Deewana-Armaan Kohli was supposed to do the role of Raja.
    2. Baazigar-Salman was first offered it, but he let go
    3. Darr- The role of Rahul was first offered to Aamir.
    4.DDLJ-First offered to Saif

But leaving Darr or Baazigar didnt make much difference to Salman or Aamir
But leaving RDB, Munnabhai, 3 idiots etc is currently hurting SRK

Good article Indicine, U are doing a great job!!!!!

  • aamir may be successful , but he is not the 2nd biggest star. when it comes to popularity , salman , sharukh , hrithik and akshay always far ahead of aamir .
aamir’s selections are good , marketing strategies are good .. thus he makes it all big hits.. but that doesnt mean he is bigger than hrithik , akshay or sharukh.

when dabaang released , aamir already had 2 ATHGs in his hand , but he was not considered as no:1 .. dabang grossed just 75% of 3 idiots.. still salman is new no:1 . why ? because the reason behind success of dabang is salamn khan , we can not say the same about aamir movies , true dangal’s success largely based on people’s trust on him. that’s just goodwill of previous movies.. its not stardom. as you said , what if srk opted to do 3 idiots ?
people trust all superstars , thats why their films generating hype and initials. but only aamir delivers ( akshay and sallu to an extent ) hrithik needs just one big grosser to become a sensation again , ditto srk. on the other hand , if 2 or 3 aamir films flops his fall will be faster .. because the reputation of quality content is no more there.
    in a brief ,
salman , akshay , srk and HR can create waves with just 1 big hit ( aka a quality entertainer) , a series of flops may put them down a little.. but they are still good
aamir needs a series of quality big hits to create the reputation and stardom , it needs only 2 flops to get him down.
this is the reason aamir is more careful than others.

  • /* Salman is way ahead simply because we was able to get nearly 9 crore people to theatres during the 12-month period when ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan – Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – Sultan’ released in theatres and all films combined collected more than 800 crore at the domestic box office.*/

Superbly explained @indicine. This paragraph is the middle finger for Bhai haters.

  • Bhai has already delivered 10 back to back successes. Before end of this decade he will definitely break Rajesh Khanna’s 15 consecutive successful movies record.

  • Respect and hatsoff to hrithik roshan.. his films was different subject which main stream heroes dont want to do like kaabil(blind man),mohenjodaro(ancient),guzarrish etc… good overall actor..

  • /* Even a 200 crore grosser like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo looks like an under-performer when compared to his other films in recent times. Such is his stardom. */

And Duniya ka sabse bada gigastar gives back to back success parties if his movies manage to go past 90cr mark (eg- Raees).
    #Difference!!!

  • Sushant Singh Rajput: “You can’t win Filmfare Awards or become the next Shah Rukh Khan through fake social media QnA’s and trying to portray a positive image through the media.”

Yeah I was also hearing such things: No Filmy background like SRK, coming from Televisions etc. Quite similar!!!
