Kambakht Ishq – First week box office collections

There is a lot of confusion with the actual week 1 figures of Akshay Kumar’s Kambakht Ishq.

The distributors of the film, Eros International announced late Friday that the film has grossed Rs 100 crores worldwide, with 70 crores coming from India and the rest, about 30 crores from rest of the world.

Interestingly, according to one credible box office website, the first week nett gross from India is just 35 crores.

Here, for a reader who doesn’t understand box-office numbers and terms, its just so easy to get confused. Many are unaware of the difference between gross and nett figures. ‘Gross’ is the total collections of a film at the box-office before deducting taxes. While ‘nett figures’ are after taxes, i.e the ‘actual’ money a movie makes. From the above numbers, 70 crores is the gross and 35 crores is the nett. Hence after deducting taxes from the 70 crores gross, the nett gross is just about 42 crores.

Yet, there is a difference of 7 crores between the two sources. So either one has over-reported, or the other has under-reported. According to our sources and some calculations, the actual nett gross is somewhere in between. Most likely around 40 crores. Anyway, we’ll go with Eros’ numbers.

Verdict for the first week

Kambakht Ishq has exceeded expectations, the film is the third biggest opener of all times after Ghajini and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. It has also done well overseas and lead star Akshay Kumar, after 2 back-to-back disasters, is back with a bang.

Just some week 1 figures from Akshay’s last few releases (apart from Tasveer)

Singh Is King – 41 crores
Kambakht Ishq – 42 crores
Chandni Chowk To China – 25 crores
Welcome – 34 crores

  • Thanx a lot to you Indicine for this article, apart from the few other credible box-office web sites, I find your website quite credible too unlike many other websites that sometimes over report and many a times under report (especially during KI). I am a big Akki fan and thus am satisfied with your article a lot. Again please keep on updating the box office performance, figures and their sources in your site, as it means a lot to some big time fans like us. Thanx again

  • Hope Kambakht Ishq does awesome in the box-office. Indicine, please update on the box office reports of Kambakht Ishq in the future, and the comparison article between RNBDJ and KI in your site is awesome even though I am an akki fan and KI is collecting slightly less than RNBDJ. Akki is the best and lots and lots of good luck to him and hope KI does great in BO.

    here is the read deal

Kambakkht Ishq grossed around 7.50 crore nett over its second weekend taking its ten day nett gross to around 43.50 crore nett. The first weekend business was 24 crore nett so the film is showing a drop of nearly 70%.

The film should finish week two at about 47 crore nett and lifetime nett business seems to be heading for the 52-55 crore range. The lifetime distributor share will be about 27-28 crore with 20 crore coming in the first week. Compared to the big films of last year it’s lifetime share will be below Ghajini, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Singh Is Kinng and Race but higher than Jodhaa Akbar and Dostana.

Mumbai, Despite mixed reviews for its weak storyline, Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor starrer romantic comedy “Kambakkht Ishq” has grossed Rs.100 crore (Rs.1 billion) at the box office in its first week.

Distributed worldwide by Eros with around 2,000 prints worldwide, “Kambakkht…” hit more than 1,400 screens in India and about 600 overseas in a combination of prints and digital format.

Directed by debutant Sabbir Khan, it released across India as well as in Pakistan, Britain, US, Australia, Europe, South Africa, Fiji Islands, the Middle East and Malaysia, among others.

  • A super star can guarantee a huge opening at the box office,
The rest depend on how good or bad the movie is .king akshay proved once again that he is the Hit King of bollywood . He has the power to turn flop script to super hit,
With new director is not easy, akshay is always depend on his own power,he is not like other who depend on Yash chopra ,we all know that most of Yash Raj movies are 75% guarantee before the release

  • HI all esp. AK fans yes KI did cross 100cr. but this figure also had music rights and other things to boost the figure…
the makers have adapted the strategy of positive publicity since thr was a lot of negative publicity goin on…
i dont say the numbers are rigged bcoz who wants to boost a wrng figure n endup paying extra-taxes..
the movie is a hit in North India n Overseas but since the overall picture is not good it is termed as Above-Average fare

Indicine pls clarify “the movie is liked more by yunger generation than elders/”gentry class”” no matter wat SRK fans blog.

  • Stop this Akki is the best, SRK is the best.. Its gonna make no different to the box office collections.. The industry considers KI to be yet another box office HIT for Akshay.. Lets look forward to Blue now..!
