Kabali Box Office Collections in India

Rajnikanth’s Kabali has created history at the box office, by recording the highest ever single-day collections for a film. The achievement is immense when you consider the fact that ‘Kabali’ is a regional film targeted mainly at audience in a couple of South States, but the level of business of the film is better than the biggest Hindi release of the year ‘Sultan’.

As per trade and official sources, the Day 1 box office collections of ‘Kabali’ is as follows. All figures are gross.

  • Tamilnadu collections – 21 crore (could be a little more when the final collections come in)
  • Andhra / Telangana collections – 12 crore
  • Others (Kerala, Karnataka and collections from other versions except Hindi) – 19.5 crore
  • Hindi Version – 5.2 crore
  • Total - 57.7 crore (approx, gross)

The industry is abuzz with comparisons between ‘Kabali’ and ‘Sultan’, but the comparison in itself is unfair to the Rajnikanth starrer. It’s like comparing the collections of a Hollywood film to Bollywood.

Rajnikanth’s main market in India is restricted to a couple of South states and the footfalls that he generates in one state is comparable to the all-India footfalls of the biggest of Hindi films. That in itself puts him way ahead of every other superstar in the country (i.e in his markets) and the very fact that he has a strong-hold over his audience at the age of 65 is simply phenomenal. In contrast to his screen image, the off-screen personality of the simple and down-to-earth Rajnikanth has also helped increase the love that he gets from his fans.

“Will the country ever see another superstar like Rajnikanth” is a question that’s all over newspapers, which is understandable because the hero-worship on Friday crossed all levels on insanity. Major superstars in the south like Pawan Kalyan for example also command crazy following, but Rajnikanth has crossed boundaries and his appeal has stretched far beyond his state and even to countries like Malaysia and Japan.

Meanwhile, even though the word-of-mouth of the film is mixed to negative, the producer of the film is elated by the response that ‘Kabali’ has got on Day 1. He claims the worldwide gross could cross 100 crore on the first day.

“It is god’s blessing that the film is doing so well. The collection is amazing not only in India but all over the world. Language does not seem to be a barrier as everyone is coming to see the film. It has created history and an all time record all over the world. The collection figure is awaited but I am assuming it has easily made Rs 100 crore on the first day” Kalaipuli S. Thanu said.

The producer of the film also declared that Rajnikanth is the only superstar in the country.

“It is the best collection an Indian actor has ever had. It shows that there is only one superstar and that is Rajinikanth” he added.
