Kaabil Trailer Review: Trade and Audience Response

The theatrical trailer of Kaabil was released on the 25th of last month and before we get down to analysing the trailer in more detail, let’s make one thing very clear – the response to Kaabil, in general, is way better than the response that Hrithik Roshan’s last release ‘Mohenjo Daro’ got.

A good response to the trailer was important because Kaabil will be up against Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees. Both films are scheduled to release in theatres on 26 January 2017. It’s a clash that many believe is suicidal because the target audience of both films could be the same – while the films are massy, both the lead stars command a following at urban centres. It’s better to get a solo release than fight over one holiday.

Positives of the Kaabil Trailer:

  • Revenge: It’s Rakesh Roshan’s mind at work here. It’s a genre that his banner specialises in, and they get it right more often than not. The trailer takes you into the happy world of blind, innocent and much-in-love characters, filled with songs and feel good moments. That’s when the villain enters and pretty much destroys all the good. From here on, the audience begin to root for the underdog (Hrithik’s character). Classic good vs evil, David vs Goliath tale, one man against the entire system. Winning formula, huge at smaller centres.. if the execution is right.
  • Fresh pairing: Hrithik’s on-screen pairing with Yami Gautam has received a positive response. The chemistry is there too.
  • Koi Mil Gaya hangover: Hrithik’s performance, especially his dialogue delivery and the innocence that he brings to the character of Rohan reminds you of one of his best performances as Rohit Mehra in Koi Mil Gaya. If his character is likeable in the film, it’s a big win.
  • The villains: It’s important for the villains to look menacing on-screen (something that Ashutosh got horribly wrong in Mohenjo Daro). Ronit and Rohit Roy do. Ronit’s performance will be something to watch out for as he has always been a terrific actor.

Some concerns that Kaabil Trailer raises:

  • Sanjay Gupta: His direction seems to be the biggest concern here. His track record is poor, most films that Gupta has directed have failed at the box office. He excels at action, but emotion is not his forte. Also, films that Rakesh Roshan has produced but not directed (Krazy 4 and Kites), have failed.
  • Small film: The makers have highlighted that Kaabil is a ‘small film with a big heart’, but small film is not something that Hrithik does very often. Most of his films are high on budget and scale, both missing in Kaabil.

To sum it up, while the Kaabil trailer doesn’t really blow you away, there is nothing in there to dislike either. It’s a simple film with all the potential to be a big success at the box office.

The economics are perfect too. Trade sources say, the cost of producing the film was less than 40 crore (without including Hrithik’s fee). There are also reports that Rakesh Roshan has sold the domestic rights to distributors for a reasonable price too, so recovery should not be difficult inspite of competition from a big film.

The numbers:

We asked 26 people in the trade (including theatre owners, distributors, trade veterans etc) for their feedback on the trailer. The response was positive – 21 of them said the trailer was ‘good’, 5 said it was ‘average’, none said it was ‘poor’. None of these people were in any which way associated with Filmkraft Productions, Hrithik Roshan, Rakesh Roshan, Sanjay Gupta or anyone related to the film. Opinions were from known and unbiased sources.

The audience response falls in the ‘fairly positive’ category too. In our poll on Twitter, when we asked if our followers liked the trailer, 62% people voted for ‘yes’ and 38% voted for ‘no’.

We have tied up with three exhibitors to get genuine opinion on the trailer. At one theatre from the Mysore circuit, we got 62 responses, 35 people said they’ll watch the film, 16 said they’ll wait for feedback / reviews, 11 said they’ll skip it. At another theatre in Mumbai circuit we asked 96 people, 53 said they’ll watch the film, 22 said they’ll wait for the reviews and 21 said they’ll skip it. In Delhi, out of 43 people that we asked, 26 said they’ll watch the film, 12 said they’ll wait for reviews and 5 said they’ll skip it.

We believe the response that we get from real people at theatres is far more accurate and unbiased as compared to Twitter and other online polls.

Here’s what some of them said (some comments have been translated from Hindi to English, as accurately as we possibly could):

  • “Will watch it for Hrithik”
  • “It was okay.. Certainly looks better than Mohenjo Daro” (Thik laga, Mohenjo Daro se toh acha hi hai)
  • “Yami and Hrithik are looking good together”
  • “Sanjay Gupta films are always crap (bekar)”
  • “Would watch it, if Raees was not releasing on the same day”
  • “Average trailer.. expected better”
  • “Excellent background music”
  • “Khatam mein karoonga” (a dialogue that’s been liked)

  • I don’t think kaabil will work at box office seriously. How can the audience accept the concept of two blind lovers romance with each other and fight with goons without eyes ???????
Or hrithik is using His fathers eyes and Tami Gautam Sanjay Gupta’s eyes ??!!

  • “Small film” is not a -ve but a +ve point ,it will be easy to recover cost if ur film is low budget specially its a big positive point in clash that too in a month like jan….

  • For me it was bad and also all my friends found it strictly average. Was not expecting much from Sanjay Gupta but still didn’t liked it. I doubt the analysis.

  • The overall concept of the movie looks so dumb … it doesn’t offer anything new,
except the same stupid revenge love story
Honestly this film will be another disappointment for hrithik and his fans.

  • HR rule January month….! KNPH and Agnipath.
When Rakesh’s Home production release on January that all movie became blockbuster example Karan Arjun, KNPH and Kuad Karz. So Kaabil chance to become blockbuster….!

  • Nothing to blame Sanjay Gupta because kaabil also copy from koreian Film but Pan Indian audience can’t diegest brutal rape of blind girl and a blind man fight for revenge it will flop badly

  • Same Salman fans were bashing Hrithik during Rustom -MD clash.now they are licking feet of Hrithik as now it is a matter against SRK.how much will u all stoop ?

  • Not interested for anything else except for dangal. The dangal mania is all the way around the world. No one cares about anything else except for dangal. The biggest megastar of all time is coming in 45 days to smash his own record and another ATHG and ATBB on cards.

  • I have not watched the trailer yet. But as a Salman fan I don’t even need to watch trailer ti praise it.
‘Shuruat Miya Bhai ne ki hai, khatam Rohan karega’.

  • I was waiting for this article and I am really happy for the positive feedback
. The trailer has received terrific response on YouTube and FB . This is something which was missing in the case of MD . The concept looks unique as both the lead characters are blind . The trailer is well edited and promises some thrilling moments and cute moments between Rohan and Su . The most important thing it is not as expensive as K3, Bang Bang and MD . The film has been completely shot in Mumbai for the period of 77 days . So economics are in the favour of Kaabil which is a great news . The background score creates a solid impact and the music is looking good something which was missing in K3 . This is the biggest challenge for Sanjay Gupta and I hope he passes this test with flying colours . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Do u think this Old crap can stand in front of Raees ????????
Raeeeeees will thrash and crush this old crap left, right and center …!!!!
Just let the trailer comes once.

  • These trade people know nowthing. I will write the best critique review of both movies. Masu and Anu chopra are my students

  • it is FilmKraft film and Rakesh Roshan & Hrithik Roshan is entirely produce KAABIL without any other producer associations.

So there’s no meaning of taking/including Hrithik Roshan free

by the way Hrithik Roshan has sign a satellite deal with StarGold. With this Hrithik’s maximum free goes to him in for satellite rights and rest will come after profits.

So there’s no meaning of including Hrithik Roshan free into film budget.

    Which means that
Kaabil budget is 40Cr and print & promotional budget will be 20-25 Cr

So total budget of Kaabil is 60-65Cr

and it’s Domestic & Overseas Theatrical rights has been sold for ? 65 crores before release plus around 45Cr satellite rights to StarGold (in a deal) and 15Cr music rights to T series.

So Kaabil is already in profit zone.

Just need to collect at BO for its Distributors or need to collect just 65 crores at BO in just one week so distributors can make profits.

Kaabil is a such film that can make 100 Cr in just one week in clash with any aiera gaera starrer film like SRK/Raees.

    KAABIL Blockbuster

Now, Big Question is Ab tera Kya hoga Kaalia ( I mean.. How much a big budget film like Raees which budget is 120Cr can make profits or what will be strategy of Raees to make profits in clash that too with Kaabil that is already in profits… I guess the DIRTY GAME with KAABIL that is the only solution for Raees to see success like RUSTOM & ADHM both played DIRTY GAME and successfully won the clash which was in impossible for both to win without DIRTY GAME)

    KAABIL IS IN WIN-WIN SITUATION

  • @ arjun youngistan fan

Youngistan ke baap this is Kaabil Raees article not your youngistan diwani article

  • Want Kaabil to do at least 100, and Raees at least 150 cr. I know it’s very difficult, but stranger things have happened. I just want SRK and HR to make a big comeback and be the top two stars again, like they once were.

  • KAABIL trailer was garbage. I saw it once by fast forwarding the trailer itself.

Poor acting. Poor chemistry. Slow and Sanjay Gupta needs to stop copying korean and Netflix original series.

He should learn from Anurag Kashyup how to make true, indian, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR like movie.

  • We Salman fans love both SRK and Hrithik. Sada rahe jori salamat tumhari. Both Kaabil and Raees will be ATBBs

  • All though I believe you made Kaabil look like bad by saying it got only good response but other media is claiming something different. Kaabil’s trailer got more viewership and likes than Dangal and any other recently released movie.

Since Indicine itself accepted the fact that it’s small budget movie, they can deny that Kaabil will be labelled as as Super Hit to Blockbuster within the first week despite competition. They will try to release it on at least 2300 theaters which will be enough to collect more than 70 to 80 crore within the first week.

You also have to keep Hrithik’s fan and FilmKraft’s brand value in mind. Under any circumstances, we are not going to miss the movie. Some might watch both Kaabil and Raes but nobody will skip it for Raes.

Raes have got certain disadvantage too. The movie makers seem to be coward for moving releasing date from one date to another until it finds another clash. Because of this cowardliness, it’s already a year old movie before it releases. It also proves that they are not much confident about their product. Even Shahrukh Khan went to Rakesh Roshan to request him to move the release date. His nervousness is clearly visible. Shahruk’s movies on the other hand is getting worse response from one movie to another. There is a downward slop in the number of people showing interest in his movies since Happy New year until Dilwale and Fan become flop. People have not forgot his decreasing brand value. Right now he is only a media made star who is breathing through media, not movies as they are not working well at the box office.

Kaabil’s marketing strategy is superb and they started marketing for it earlier than Raes. Anyone who following Hrithik on Facebook found his trailer through messaging him. As soon as people messaged, they got trailer with a sweet message in their inbox which is completely a different experience. They are associating some moments from the movie in celebrating festivals like Dewali and things like that. Marketing wise, they are doing superb. So I don’t see this movie other than having getting a Big Hit title even if collects less than 100 crore.
