Jodha Akbar Box office Verdict

Every Hrithik Roshan movie is widely discussed, celebrated, criticized and looked forward to. Barely 8 years old in the industry he cannot afford failures. Jodha Akbar was off to a poor start on friday in India, largely due to its limited release at multiplexes; not to forget the pathetic promotion, and many on movie forums were actually questioning his star power!

So whats the verdict on Jodha Akbar? Has the movie worked with the audience? Were the performances upto the mark? Was the ever so long wait worth it? Has it worked at the all important box-office? The answer is YES! Jodha Akbar has worked big time, with the critics and the audience! The critics especially have loved the movie and the audience reaction has been extremely positive. The performances, direction, cinematography, music, visuals, choreography almost every aspect has been praised. The only thing that has been criticized is the length.

Now the box-office verdict

India – The movie was off to a slow start on friday grossing 3.25 crores, picked up big time on saturday grossing almost 7 crores. The weedend gross (Friday – Saturday – Sunday) is expected to be around 17 crores! One more thing that is in favour of Jodha Akbar is, there is absolutely no big release for more than a month, the next big bollywood release is Race which releases on 21st March! The timing of the release has been perfect!

Overseas – Jodha Akbar had the widest release for a Bollywood movie ever! It was released in 26 countries in about 1500 prints!

United Kingdom (UK) – Jodha Akbar released on 70 prints and grossed 57,000+ pounds on the thursday night preview alone! The opening has been earth shattering and could end up just a tad below Shahrukh Khan’s Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Om Shanti Om for the weekend, which would mean its the third biggest opening in the UK for a Bollywood movie! Now for a histrocial, its a HUGE achievement!

Unites States (US) – The movie had the biggest release for a Bollywood movie ever and the openning is even bigger opening here.. It has reportedly grossed $374,000 on Friday! SRK’s Om Shanti Om grossed $385,000 on the first day of its release. Jodha Akbar has surpassed all expectations. Never in the widest of dreams would anyone have expected it to open so big.

The poor promotion, delay, negativity around the movie prior to its release; absolutely nothing seemed to have affected the movie. This is by far the biggest opening for a Hrithik Roshan movie overseas. In short, Jodha Akbar looks like a winner all the way, at home and overseas!

Note – For the exact overseas figures, be sure to check this space on Tuesday!

  • Big movies specially a historical one has to be long as they spend money on production and needs big efforts and the story itself is long. If big movie such as Jodhaa Akbar which was suppose to be 4 1/2hrs and the director chopped an hour scenes from the movie and made it only 31/2, then he would have ruined the whole movie!!
And let’s say he chopped 2hrs of the movie, and everyone to imagine that some scences which we saw on the screen were deleted by the director, I don’t think we would have loved the movie or accepted. I’m sure everyone would have said: 2 1/2 only for such a big movie!!

Audiences are never satisfied, whether directors give them the best or the worse, they must leave the theatre with some criticisum. This is human’s nature.

  • The movie was EXCELLENT IN ALL ASPECT. HRITHIK WAS BORN TO PLAY THE ROLE OF AKBAR. The direction by Mr. Gawarikar was AWESOME. EVERYTHING WAS VERY REALISTIC AND DID NOT LOOK CHEAP LIKE SAAWARIYA. ALSO THE BALANCE BETWEEN WAR, ROMANCE, EMOTIONS WERE PERFECT. THE MUSIC WAS VERY TOUCHY! I THINK HRITHIK SHOULD DEFINETELY GET THE AWARD FOR THE BEST ACTOR IN INDIA FOR 2008. THIS MOVIE SHOULD BE NOMINATED FOR OSCARS. OVERALL, I AM VERY GLAD AFTER A LONG TIME A GOOD MOVIE IS MADE – WHICH IS CLEAN AND HAS A LOT TO LEARN FROM. MOVIE’S BIGGEST STRENGTH WAS HRITHIK…..BEST OUTFIT, LOOKS, ACTING + ACTION.

    UR THE BEST HRITHIK!

  • Blockbuster movie. Everybody must watch this movie for the sake of Indian Cinema, to promote good quality movie. One of the finest movie I have seen after tare Zameen Par.

  • thank God its doing incredibly well! Ash and hrithik totally rocked this movie! unlike dumb srk who only cries and shakes and they call it a masterpiece but JA truly is a masterpiece!
i swear..people in India have nothing else to do…wtf protests over a frigging movie?! my God…grow up! directors are allowed to explore different avenues in a movie..thats why its called a MOVIE fools!
Ash better win all the awards for this otherwise someone will die!

  • chuttar picture hain yaar. gariya piraye lage!! what a stupid movie. some good sequences. but its just a crap movie overall. very boring. rather watch a massala flick like partner. popkorn khao, picture dekho, girlfriend ko kiss karo theater mein, aur mast ho jao.

JA is trash. NOT oscar material. stupid movie. one or 2 good scenes mean crap. wathc the scene where ash fights with hrithik. hrithik looks like a fukin girl outdone by ash who looks like meri dadi ma and is a skinny ass.

SRK rocks. aamir rocks!! watch out for ghajini which will be even better.

  • What a movie! It is truly a monumental epic – a magnum opus in every sense. The sets, the music, the acting, the costumes and above all the direction were all outstanding – never before seen in a Bollywood movie. It is reported the film costs Rs.40 crores (about US$10 million). Of course, this is peanuts compared to a Hollywood movie but for a Bollywood movie, it is a huge sum of money.

Hrithik Roshan was Akbar. By far, this is his best performance in an illustrious movie career. Shah Rukh Khan is just Shah Rukh Khan in every movie. SRK is an overrated actor appeaing in 3 or 4 movies a year. This is Hrithik’s first release after Dhoom 2 in 2006. He is careful in choosing the movie he appears whereas SRK believes in the Cheaper by the Dozen theory. Well done Hrithik, keep it up.

Aishwarya Rai was very good too especially in the scenes she appears with Hrithik.

Finally, I hope this film is nominated in the Best Foreign Film category next year.

  • Excellent MOvie! Every one must to see this film.Hrithik & Aishwarya rocking performance.
Hrithik would be next Millenium star after Amitabh Bacchan.
    H R T H I K IS GREAT!!!!

  • JODHA-AKBAR is jus amazing…………hv already seen it 2ce m planning 2 c mre times…HRITHIK is simply SUPERB..he hs done full justice 2 d role of akbar..evn ash n other actors hv done a good job…..its a visual delite …thanx mr. Govarikar for givIn us a fabulous movie like JA…

  • it will remain as the best in the indian film history…Hrithik n other n over all Asutosh’s direction was superb…

  • A superb movie……….

Once again Asutosh has proved it……….

Hrithik and Aish was a perfect pairing. No one else can give justice as they did.

Hrithik was as usual so perfect perfect perfect.

Aishwarya was really so gorgeous and mavelous. This movie will surely change the carrer of both especially Aish b’coz its her first release after mariage.

A MOVIE WHICH WILL B ALWAYS REMEMBERED FOR YEARS.

  • what a film it is. hrithik performace is mind blowing. it will be a big hit in 2008. it is best historical film compare to ashoka and mangal panday.

  • fuck up u all movie watchers………………
this movie sucks worst movie i have deen after saawaria.
    fuk up ualllllllllllllllllllllll

  • simply amazing!!!!!!!!!! every action every move is so well done that the length of the movie didn’t bother me at alllllllllll.
Jodha Akbar drives you in, making the audience a part of the historical era.
I salute the director for having a “grander than life” perception.

    MARVELOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great Movie. This is how good movies are made. There are good movies and then there are masala movies. Each has there own audiences. If you love masala movies than this one is not recommended for you.

  • Fascinating Movie!!! Thoguh the history was moulded a lil bit but that was for good.It just paid off.Hrithik was good as usual and so was Ash.Ashutosh Gowarikar did a better job this time than Swades. Now i believe that hes the same director who made Lagaan as well.

  • The movie was a complete piece of fiction and should have not been linked with Indian history. A true misrepresentation after all!!! Jodha was Akbar’s son wife and moreover Akbar’s wife was Hir Kunwar who was converted to Islam right before the marriage. Also, Akbar’s first wife was the widow of Bairam Khan (remember the general who helped Akbar win the war of Panipat)… Could it get any more disgusting?? Guess what, it does, Akbar married 4 times, and so much for the love chemistry between Akbar and Jodha (Hir Kanwar). It is truly unbelievable that Ashutosh Gowariker could direct a movie as crappy as this, which truly distorts history. I am glad the movie has been banned in Rajasthan and am truly grateful to the Indian public that they have not embraced the movie and it will after all turn out to be another flop. I wish the comments in this post were made only after people had any sense of Indian history. Nothing more than another piece of crap.

  • i was thundard after watching dis movie.it’s excellent.this film should get all the awards.everybody must watch it.

  • I just loved the movie. I never used to be a grt fan of Hrithik. But this movie was something beyond my expectation. If I want to learn more abt Mugal history, I will get hold of some history books rather watching a movie. The director himself agreed that 70% this movie is from his imagination. Akbar had more than 800 wives. So what?? U want the director to show all of them in this movie?? When I watch a movie I care for one thing..what it conveys to me. How it makes me feel at end. And I felt spell bounded. Watch the movie for Hrithik and Aish. Watch it for the greatest performance of a decade. Watch it for the love one feel for the opposite gender. I WOULD SAY ITS CLASS
